Breaking News: 3rd ID rumbling into heart of Baghdad

Sketchy report from FoxNews' Greg Kelly, embedded with the 3rd ID, that elements of that unit are moving toward the center of Baghdad.

UPDATE: Kelly now saying they are in downtown Baghdad. Near parade grounds surrounding a palace. Resistance light to heavy; heaviest resistance downtown . . . Cut off after that.

Quick, everybody to the livecam!

Posted by: rose at April 7, 2003 12:10 AM

CNN is down. Anybody else got any working links?

Posted by: phred at April 7, 2003 12:11 AM

Nail the damn statue first!

Posted by: JackRyan at April 7, 2003 12:12 AM

CBS and MSNBC no webcam.

Damnit, this is sweeps week!

Posted by: phred at April 7, 2003 12:13 AM

Here's one. There were just several very large cracks, didn't sound like bombs, much much sharper than bombs (higher pitched) maybe more like tank guns firing or artillery? There are currently more of them. Lots and lots. Some small arms fire heard, sounds like it's far away.

This is the "mosque" cam, that you see all the time on the cable stations.

Posted by: Jonathan at April 7, 2003 12:15 AM

Hey, there's no picture! I must see the tanks go through that silly intersection.

Posted by: rose at April 7, 2003 12:15 AM

Sounds like fireworks going off. Audio just went sketchy.

Posted by: Jonathan at April 7, 2003 12:18 AM

Heres one

It comes up - file not found. Must be too many trying to connect!

Posted by: Phil B at April 7, 2003 12:18 AM

File not found. Reboot the Internet!

Posted by: phred at April 7, 2003 12:20 AM

I am finally able to see some video at CBS. The image comes and goes but I can hear some explosions.

Posted by: Jeannie at April 7, 2003 12:21 AM

Greg Kelly - tomb of unknown soldier, presidential palace, surrounded...

little resistance.

Damn, they went for the heart.

Posted by: phred at April 7, 2003 12:21 AM

The CNN live cam is working, but it's black. The web feed is good - the CNN bug shows, but the picture is black. must be the camera or satellite...

Posted by: CERDIP at April 7, 2003 12:22 AM

CBS Video is back up.

If I'm right, the camera is pointed 180 degrees away from the action we're hearing about. The hotel is on the East side of the Tigris and is pointed SE.

West of the hotel is the main government area, which is where I believe they are at right now.

Juggular.

Posted by: phred at April 7, 2003 12:23 AM

Those gun shots sound fairly close! (And I have to tell you that it is storming where I live and the thunder just rumbled at the same time as one of the explosions. Thought I was going to jump out of my skin. LOL!)

Posted by: Jeannie at April 7, 2003 12:23 AM

CBSNews.com live baghdad cam works for me...not much to see though

Posted by: Clyde at April 7, 2003 12:24 AM

I hate RealPlayer... Stupid software takes control of the system's volume INSTEAD of only its channel...

Stupid RealPlayer

Posted by: Original Mark at April 7, 2003 12:25 AM

CBS webcam just got excellent, after a hand briefly covered the lens and adjusted something. they're moving the camera around...

Posted by: Clyde at April 7, 2003 12:25 AM

Here is a list of internet war video sites:

http://www.webcamsue.demon.nl/

If you go to the Al Jazeera webcam, you'll see it all. Plus someone is panning the webcam to keep track.

Don't steal my bandwidth though! Just kidding...

Posted by: U.S. Cavalry at April 7, 2003 12:26 AM

CBS cam still pointed at mosque.

most of the noise is NOT explosions but wind noise.

Posted by: Clyde at April 7, 2003 12:27 AM

The US doctrine of "push, push, push" is impressive to behold. The pyschological effects on moral are enormous.

Poor 4th ID may not have much to do

Posted by: cb at April 7, 2003 12:28 AM

CNN talking about war planes over baghdad... hearing explosions on CBSwebcam...

US ofcr says armored column in downtown baghdad.

Probably shopping.

Posted by: phred at April 7, 2003 12:28 AM

Sounds like something firing on the CBS webcam.

Darn it. The pics great now, and I'll want to stay up all night to watch any possible action.... (sigh).

Posted by: Kathleen at April 7, 2003 12:29 AM

At least we're not hearing the car alarm. LOL!

Posted by: Jeannie at April 7, 2003 12:29 AM

If I'm 3ID, I'm thinking screw all this talk about how tough 4ID is. These guys are brothers in arms, but don't believe for a minute that they don't have a rivalry. They'll take out Baghdad just to show up the hotshots.

I hear police cars in Baghdad. It's the cops! Let's split!

I don't think so.

Posted by: phred at April 7, 2003 12:30 AM

OHHH!!!! The Presidential palaces will be easy to secure like the airport was. Makes sense in hindsite. They have walls... guard shacks, been pounded to hell.. etc.

Posted by: cb at April 7, 2003 12:31 AM

All your palaces are belong to us

Live video of A-10's over Bagdad

Posted by: craig at April 7, 2003 12:32 AM

The camera just fell over - Watched the guy swing by the front manning another camera.

FIX IT!! I want to watch my defense dollars at work.

A-10s over Baghdad!

Posted by: U.S. Cavalry at April 7, 2003 12:34 AM

You can hear the A-10 firing on the web camera and see it on CNN on Al-Arabya. Amazing!

Posted by: ND at April 7, 2003 12:34 AM

*DOH* I thought it fell over - my window was too small to see the A-10's just maximzed.

Orion

Posted by: Orion at April 7, 2003 12:35 AM

I hear AAA as I'm watching that A10. Scary. 2 A10s now.

Why doesn't some guy in a zebra shirt come out, blow a whistle, and call for a commercial time out? My eyeballs are floating.

Posted by: phred at April 7, 2003 12:36 AM

Keep your heads down guys - do it right and do it safe.

Orion

Posted by: Orion at April 7, 2003 12:38 AM

Uh oh! Hear car alarm on CBS now!

Posted by: C. A. Morgan at April 7, 2003 12:40 AM

Anybody watching CBS Webcam? Please tell me that constant rumbling is wind in the microphone.

Posted by: TangoEchoXray at April 7, 2003 12:40 AM

pls be save guys,,,,, this sounds rough

Posted by: bill at April 7, 2003 12:41 AM

amazing coincedence that the US forces prefer to watch Fox and that fox has had the exclusive scoop lately on these amazing penetrations.

Posted by: cb at April 7, 2003 12:42 AM

Whistling Death over Baghdad....The world is a very different place these days. Folks only a few decades ago had to wait weeks to hear the result of a battle -we're watching it live.

Damn guys! If this camera can track you some little bastard with a SA-7 can too! Be safe!!!!!!

Orion

Posted by: Orion at April 7, 2003 12:43 AM

That constant rumbling in the CBS feed is probably wind in the microphones. You can see how it syncs up with the rippling of the palm trees. The machine gun fire, however, is wind moving MUCH faster.

Posted by: darkcoffee at April 7, 2003 12:45 AM

TangoEchoXray - The CBSNews.com camera microphone always has a lot of wind noise--usually verifiable with swaying trees.

Posted by: Clyde at April 7, 2003 12:45 AM

Everybody take 1 minute and pray for our guys. They're kicking ass in the heart of Babylon.

Now would be a great time for the Iraqi people to stand up and say "screw this".

Posted by: phred at April 7, 2003 12:46 AM

Go to that website I listed and select "Baghdad Cam."

They are on the action now!

Posted by: U.S. Cavalry at April 7, 2003 12:48 AM

Okay, thank goodness it's just wind. I have an older version of real player and the picture is incredibly whited out to the point that it looks like a huge light is shining behind the mosque. When I first saw it and heard the wind I thought someone had nuked the joint!

Posted by: TangoEchoXray at April 7, 2003 12:48 AM

If you are watching the "mosque cam" and not the one I'm talking about above, you are missing the battle...

Posted by: U.S. Cavalry at April 7, 2003 12:50 AM

THANKS US CAV! that webcam is awesome!

Posted by: cb at April 7, 2003 12:51 AM

US Calvalry - I found the link but can't see the image. Guess I don't have the right software. :/

Posted by: Jeannie at April 7, 2003 12:52 AM

You will need realplayer. Go to "Baghdad" and then "High Bitrate."

Posted by: U.S. Cavalry at April 7, 2003 12:53 AM

US Calvary - kick ass video. Who is running that?

Man, I wish I knew what side I was looking at!

Posted by: phred at April 7, 2003 12:54 AM

Drat, they just cut away from the Tigris riverside battle. What was the big fireball from???

Posted by: cb at April 7, 2003 12:54 AM

Video Cavalry mentioned: paste this into RealPlayer:

http://62.156.242.10/cgi-bin/redirNTV?user=ntv&type=live&name=livecam_300_new.rm

didn't work for me either.

just cut out, something was burning on camera, now it's a skyline. CBS cam seems broken

Posted by: Joe at April 7, 2003 12:55 AM

phred-- I don't know. It seems to switch between several different cams-- one is the familiar "mosque cam," and one is somewhere else in the city, and one is by the river where you can see two M2 Bradleys right now (and something burning-- I'm thinking an oil trench).

Posted by: U.S. Cavalry at April 7, 2003 12:56 AM

CBS live feed cam - looks like noone on-site is looking at it, it keeps cutting out from overload of being pointed almost at the sun and wode-open aperture.

Most noise is wind, occasional thump of artillery/cannon.

Posted by: John Anderson at April 7, 2003 12:56 AM

CNN reports US troops enter a Pres Palace.

All your palaces are belong to us!

Posted by: phred at April 7, 2003 12:57 AM

CNN finally has the same view of the trench fire and the river...

US TANKS ROLLING THROUGH BAGHDAD ON THE "BAGHDAD CAM" ON http://www.webcamsue.demon.nl/

Posted by: ND at April 7, 2003 01:00 AM

Actually the CNN video is of a DIFFERENT section of M2s than the ones they are showing on the webcam.

Posted by: U.S. Cavalry at April 7, 2003 01:01 AM

huge explosion on that "baghdad cam"

Posted by: chinook at April 7, 2003 01:01 AM

Absolutly Incredible!

Posted by: Clyde at April 7, 2003 01:03 AM

Posted by: Jeannie at April 7, 2003 01:03 AM

wow - just saw a building blow up on http://62.156.242.10/cgi-bin/redirNTV?user=ntv&type=live&name=livecam_300_new.rm

Posted by: Clyde at April 7, 2003 01:05 AM

So, that is *our* tank going up that hill?

Posted by: Jeannie at April 7, 2003 01:05 AM

Looks like that column along the river can get past that building just above the bend incline.

Posted by: TangoEchoXray at April 7, 2003 01:06 AM

MSNBC is now showing the video on the air.

Posted by: Jeannie at April 7, 2003 01:06 AM

holy s--t! a building just blew up on "baghdad cam". lots of gunfire and it sounds like there is an awful lot of commotion in the background.this is unbelievable.

Posted by: chinook at April 7, 2003 01:07 AM

Jeannie-

Those are M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicles (BFVs). They carry infantry or scouts into battle in the back. They have a 25MM gun, a 7.62mm machine gun, and a TOW anti-tank missile launcher (as well as the small arms of their occupants).

I have yet to see an M1 tank.

Posted by: U.S. Cavalry at April 7, 2003 01:07 AM

"It will be interesting to see if the Information Minister makes his daily briefing today"

on CNN just now

Posted by: C. A. Morgan at April 7, 2003 01:08 AM

Did anyone else here a loud thump right before the webcam went black?

Posted by: Joe at April 7, 2003 01:09 AM

Thanks US. My picture is really dark. It is a little hard to make out too much detail.

Posted by: Jeannie at April 7, 2003 01:09 AM

Dark here, too. Especially now on different cam.

Posted by: FOG at April 7, 2003 01:10 AM

MSNBC is mentioning the drone shone earlier on Al Jazeera. Guess this is what it was looking for, huh?

Posted by: Jeannie at April 7, 2003 01:12 AM

FNC live video with Greg Kelly at Pres. Palace NOW.

Posted by: U.S. Cavalry at April 7, 2003 01:14 AM

By the way, that guy (COL Dave Perkins) is my old boss... great guy.

No kidding. They are in good hands.

Posted by: U.S. Cavalry at April 7, 2003 01:15 AM

rawr, I want FNC...crappy Canadian cable

Posted by: C. A. Morgan at April 7, 2003 01:16 AM

Does anyone know where the image now showing on the Baghdad Cam is? (I'm seeing a tall building on the left.)

Posted by: Jeannie at April 7, 2003 01:16 AM

Said the entire 2nd BCT (Brigade Combat Team) is in Baghdad. Securing several sites. That is a full three battalions (about 200+ combat vehicles). Wow... very unexpected and impressive.

Posted by: U.S. Cavalry at April 7, 2003 01:18 AM

"Good morning, Baghdaaaaaad!"

Posted by: Jeannie at April 7, 2003 01:18 AM

I hate to say this, but I can't stop being in the military:

That is a live picture with a very identifiable landmark in the background. I'm sure some Iraqi artilleryman has a map of Baghdad and could shell the area with great accuracy.

Then again, maybe there is no more Iraqi artillery in Baghdad...

Posted by: U.S. Cavalry at April 7, 2003 01:23 AM

What is that? The leaning tower of Baghdad?

Posted by: FOG at April 7, 2003 01:25 AM

I'm guessing those Iraqis eunning along the river intend to regroup.

Posted by: TangoEchoXray at April 7, 2003 01:32 AM

USCavalry, the Iraqi artilleryman would also need electricity and a TV or computer & fat internet, right?

Posted by: Clyde at April 7, 2003 01:44 AM
