Another Republican Guard Division Reported Destroyed

The Washington Post quotes the U.S. Marines as saying that Nida division of the Iraqi Republican Guard had been defeated by U.S.-led forces pushing toward Baghdad. The Marines say that the elite division has "ceased to exist as an effective fighting force," with two of three brigades destroyed and the third unaccounted for.

Rob Milford, CBS Radio, with the 8th Marine Tank battalion, on the air live with a Rochester, NY talk-show host (8th Tank is based near here, a lot of local relates).

A Mercedes speeding toward a checkpoint refused to stop, they opened up on it with .50 caliber machine guns. Killed the commanding general of the the Nida division of the Republican Guard. Found in the car--personal papers, orders, a phone book listing many important numbers including Baath party officials, Iraqi defense, Saddam's palaces, and supposedly a private number for Saddam. Intelligence has the documents.

This is my new favorite phrase:

[The RG] "...ceased to exist as an effective fighting force..."
