Iraq Information Minister Issues Chilling Warning, claims airport is an isolated island

The headline is Sky's, but I watched it and it was pretty chilling, mostly because the Information Minister had this weird smirky smile on his face the whole time as he was saying it. The reporters kept asking what it would be and he said, "I won't give away the secret." He also said that the forces now stationed at the airport would not leave there alive.

Here is the story on the Sky site:

Iraq has warned it will take non-conventional action against US troops at Baghdad International Airport tonight.
Saddam Hussein's information minister said: "Tonight we will carry out something that is non-conventional against them, not military. It will be a great example to them."
It was not clear what Mohammed Said al-Sahhaf meant by "non-conventional".
Asked if Iraq would use weapons of mass destruction, he said: "No, not at all. But we will conduct kind of martyrdom operations."
US-led forces have been on alert for possible Iraqi use of biological or chemical weapons, which Baghdad denies it possesses.
Iraq's main spokesman warned that US forces are isolated at Baghdad International Airport.
"Unless they surrender quickly, I don't think there's any chance that they will survive," he said.
"We consider it an isolated island. They are completely surrounded."

Here is the BBC's take:

Iraqi Information Minister Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf has said that US forces at Baghdad's main airport are encircled and isolated. He has said the Iraqi military is preparing to launch what he called "non-conventional" attacks later on Friday against the coalition troops at the airport. Military analysts suggest that this is more likely to mean guerrilla tactics and suicide attacks, rather than a chemical or biological attack.

Would that be with the non-convential weapons that Blix says they don't have?

Posted by: Ribbity Frog at April 4, 2003 10:15 AM

This guy sounds like Hitler in the bunker, ranting about special "ray guns" that were going to turn the tide of the war. When you set yourself up as all-powerful, it's easier to believe delusions than any facts that strip that power away from you.

Posted by: Homewatcher at April 4, 2003 10:16 AM

Is they actually had anything that could be effective, surely they wouldn't be stupid enough to truly tell us all it was coming ahead of time? They are stupid, but not that stupid. this is obviously just a bluff to try to retain control in Baghdad.. "Don't start rebelling, we're about to wipe out your liberators tonight with our secret martyrdom weapons. We all see how effective martyrdom weapons have been so far..

Posted by: mojoski at April 4, 2003 10:20 AM

Sounds to me like they're planning on herding several tens of thousands of people into the airport.

Posted by: Dishman at April 4, 2003 10:21 AM

"Martyrdom operation"

That sounds painful. For the martyr, that is.

Posted by: Bri at April 4, 2003 10:21 AM

Do you get the feeling taking the airport was a little too "easy", relatively speaking that is?

Posted by: inotreb at April 4, 2003 10:21 AM

Here comes 5,000 one-man fire crackers...

You watch.. These cowards are going to attack with women infront of them...

Hope all the video cameras record this as the evidence will be necessary when we hang the leaders up from lamp posts.

Posted by: Original Mark at April 4, 2003 10:23 AM

It's got to be human wave of martyrs. We are either going to have to mow down a lot of "unarmed civilians" or fall back. Our folks haven't had time to get up the razor wire etc they need to hold the facility against a human wave. Somehow, I believe there will be a lot of Arab TV cameras there.

Posted by: Frank Derfler at April 4, 2003 10:23 AM

I agree. It sounds as if all those people they've been rounding up are going to be driven, en-masse, towards the airport. There may be a lot of Iraqi dead after tonight. It's no good for the Iraqis. I hope we've got the Special Ops guys ready to kill those Ba'athist pushing the regular people, as quickly as possible.

Posted by: Jonathan at April 4, 2003 10:24 AM

Not that I think the minister of disinformation is a rational chap, but it sounds like a diversionary tactic, possibly while they launch WMD elsewhere. I hope it is not an enmasse human shield.

Posted by: Todd at April 4, 2003 10:24 AM

mojoski, I would normally agree with you but why would he give a specific night to do this martyrdom operation? If he really wanted to hold control over the Iraqis he could have just said this week or something else.

I hope to God I'm wrong but something feels very bad about all this.

Posted by: Inotreb at April 4, 2003 10:25 AM

Probably not a "human wave". I'd expect something like a civilian airliner crashing on the airport... full of "martyrs" of course.

Posted by: Caton at April 4, 2003 10:26 AM

Anyone wonder if maybe they buried something *under* the airport? Big ol' dirty bomb or something like that?

Posted by: jrosevear at April 4, 2003 10:28 AM

I just hope this isn't where we find out that Saddam *did* manage to develop a nuclear capability...

Posted by: thekirk at April 4, 2003 10:28 AM

This is scare-tactics bs. If they really had something up their sleeve they wouldn't bother to warn us about it beforehand.

Posted by: not worried at April 4, 2003 10:29 AM

If its a mass of humans then hopefully they will...

Tell the front people just to fake dying, in the darkness no one will really be able to tell the difference...

That the Americans use tear gas, the people will scatter, the soldiers will put on Gas Masks, and then we'll be able to tell the difference...

Do a flanking attack and get these bastards in the back...

Posted by: Original Mark at April 4, 2003 10:31 AM

>Iraq's main spokesman warned that US forces are isolated at Baghdad International Airport.
"Unless they surrender quickly, I don't think there's any chance that they will survive," he said.
"We consider it an isolated island. They are completely surrounded."

American response - "They've got us surrounded, the poor bastards."

Posted by: Achariyth at April 4, 2003 10:31 AM

I hear the Iraqi (dis)information minister is being recruited by Howard Raines to write for the New York Times.

The lights went out in Baghdad to hide the Saddamite's actions, and to keep the regular folk indoors.

Keep that in mind when thinking of human waves of suicide bombers and civilian shields.

This might backfire awfully badly on the Saddamites. I have faith in our military. It may be ugly, but watch them handle it well.

Posted by: Cowboy Bob at April 4, 2003 10:31 AM

The downside of the information age is, that every "brain fart" get's reported.
I have only one word "propaganda".

If I am wrong I have a smurk on my face and say "Bring it own".

Posted by: Peter M at April 4, 2003 10:35 AM

Sadam was on TV, he appears to have made a specific statement (about Apache?), so he might be alive.

Posted by: ElCapitanAmerica at April 4, 2003 10:35 AM

Maybe they think we don't know about the tunnels into the city that are under the airport.

Shhh...

Posted by: robert at April 4, 2003 10:38 AM

MSNBC : Tape appears to be current.

Posted by: ElCapitanAmerica at April 4, 2003 10:38 AM

Perhaps, the Iraqi airplanes that we haven't seen yet? Sort of middle eastern kamikadze? Whatever it is, it sounds bad to me and I would not dismiss this threat immediately. I know the guy is barking mad and it may be a desperate bluff but there just might be planning some monstrosity...they are certainly capable of it.

Posted by: gabriel syme at April 4, 2003 10:38 AM

MSNBC : He referred to the "Iraqi villager" who downed a US Apache.

Calls for Jihad, invokes Palestinian cause.

So there's hope we can capture this bastard and try him for war crimes.

Posted by: ElCapitanAmerica at April 4, 2003 10:39 AM

Putin's comments regarding this war being the greatest threat to global security since the Cold War have me wondering what he knows. He doesn't strike me as a man prone to irrational or hyperbolic statements, rather he seems pretty low key. Also, there was an article recently pointing out the intelligence links (in addition to the arms links) between Iraq and Russia.

Posted by: Lori at April 4, 2003 10:39 AM

I think he is just desperate. Just like he said before that the coalition troops were 100's of miles away etc.
This message is hopefully meant for the people that are still in the city..to scare them.

Posted by: Blogeline at April 4, 2003 10:39 AM

OK, let's see:
1. "non-conventional"
2. "non-military"
3. "kind of martyrdom operation"
It's sounds like they're gonna drag Saddam Hussein in front of TV cameras, lynch him and then claim immunity. It would fit all three specifications.

Posted by: KIM at April 4, 2003 10:40 AM

"Would that be with the non-convential weapons that Blix says they don't have?"

Blix so far has been right. Chem/bio doctrine says first coice is against staging/rear areas before or at start of your opponent's attack, second choice is against trenches or conducting human waves. Even our own predictions about the "red line" which are not really logical either have proved false.

Looking at our frontline soldiers today you can clearly see they are not wearing their chem bio suits for teh first time since ground ops started.

My guess is that Saddam's men are trying to get civilians to conduct a mass march on the airport.

Ironically this may fail as resistance to us in the Sunni areas is aactuallyt turning out to be less than in Shi'ia areas.

"Anyone wonder if maybe they buried something *under* the airport? Big ol' dirty bomb or something like that?"

Nope. Dirty bombs/radioactive weapons and for that matter tactical nuclear weapons are not really wise to use to your own west. (this is why Pakistan knows that India is screwed if it uses nuclear against Pakistan, since all the fallout would end up in India.)

Also dirty bombs, which are a pretty tame psychological weapon, are not useful against troops.

Posted by: vet73 at April 4, 2003 10:40 AM

I'm not too worried about the "wave of martyrs" scenario. Any mass gathering of civilians or soldiers is sure to be identified by intel or be spotted well in advance, and I'm confident that our troops have planned for such a contingency.

I think they're gonna try to slime us, despite the Disinformation minister's comments to the contrary. They know it's all over for them, and they have nothing to lose now.

Posted by: Curt at April 4, 2003 10:42 AM

Question: If they keep having all these press conferences, how come we dont' know where they are?

Posted by: Al at April 4, 2003 10:44 AM

Maybe this is one of the famous Hussein doubles. If they are truly desperate why not trot one out at this point even if we would be able to debunk him pretty quick?

Posted by: Mark Buehner at April 4, 2003 10:47 AM

"Any mass gathering of civilians or soldiers is sure to be identified by intel or be spotted well in advance, and I'm confident that our troops have planned for such a contingency.
"

Like what? Look at what happened to our troops in Najaf, they were forced to withdraw by chanting crowds.

Twenty gunmen in a crowd of 500 or 1,000 civilians could create a very difficult situation.

Posted by: Les at April 4, 2003 10:48 AM

I think that this would be a perfect exaample of where Rumsfeld has said the US would use tear gas. And this is the perfect situation where you can see where teargas would be the humanitarian choice.

Posted by: Damon at April 4, 2003 10:50 AM

maybe the Dis-information minister is getting his script written by Peter Arnet.

As far as those tunnels go, I'm sure the marines have already secured them.

maybe those bus loads of Syrian and "palistinian" suicide bombers are due to arrive soon. I'm sure they have that hiway blocked as well.

Posted by: Old timer at April 4, 2003 10:54 AM

I see this has been touched on in prior posts, but my worry is a pre-located mine simliar to those used in Ypres and other WWI locations.

Either that or they've managed to bury the 'missing' tanks and APCs (of which I think they have none - we've destroyed them in detail) and they're going to spring out of their hidden underground garages and attack from the rear at close range.

Orion

Posted by: Orion at April 4, 2003 11:25 AM

My fear is that the Iraqis might have actually thought something through for once. The airport is a key asset to have for the coalition, and it's entirely possible that it's been booby trapped in the off chance that America would invade (they did a bunch of work on the site post-Gulf I). Coupled with the entire reserve of Baghdad's water supply (oddly cut off recently) the little moat around the airport could get much larger and make it difficult to maneuver if something dangerous comes around. Especially if it's too steep for our equipment to climb back out of the water.

Posted by: J Li at April 4, 2003 11:54 AM

If we use tear gas, they can add something more lethal to the ambiance and point to lots of dead victims of criminal Americans.

Posted by: shipmate at April 4, 2003 11:57 AM

"Un-conventional"

It will never work; General Franks has a secret weapon at the airport, "Combat TSA Screeners."

All attackers will have to go through the full TSA screening before they will be allowed to attack. this includes the dread "shoes" exam.

Oh wait a minute, would it be illegal profiling if we only check those attackers who are Arabic????

Posted by: Jim Hogue at April 4, 2003 11:59 AM

" will never work; General Franks has a secret weapon at the airport, "Combat TSA Screeners."

Excuse me but that failed in Najef.

Posted by: Yawn at April 4, 2003 12:03 PM

"We will do something which I believe is very beautiful," said Minister Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf at a Baghdad news conference, adding that the Iraqis planned to strike back "in an unconventional way." Asked if that meant the use of chemical weapons or other weapons of mass destruction, he quickly said no.

"What I meant are commando and martyrdom operations in a very new, creative way," al-Sahhaf said.

Something beautiful, creative....

Posted by: shipmate at April 4, 2003 12:46 PM

How soon can we set up a TV transmitter at the airport? Then, hook that up to a live video feed. If a human wave attacks, broadcast the whole thing to Baghdad. My guess is that Baghdadis will be overwhelmingly horrified.

Posted by: Andrew Hagen at April 4, 2003 01:05 PM

"I hear the Iraqi (dis)information minister is being recruited by Howard Raines to write for the New York Times."

The New York Times probably has more combat veterans reporting than any other paper.

They have also been the most factual and had the most accurate predictions for how the war would unfold.

I wasn't a daily reader of the times before but the war has changed my mind on that.

When you tally up the reporting errors by far the winner for the most inaccurate roperting is going to be Fox (which I used to love). Just do a search for "scuds" on their site and you will se they have repeated the untrue scud launch BS more than anyone else.

America, the people of, will sends its officals and its non-government conrolled press to talk and listen to lies of leaders. Saddam and his followers like Mohammed Said al-Sahhaf. America will wait until the evidence is in. Then make a majority vote on responce, 13 years in this case. America does not put its people into war from an overnight claim. When America goes to war its for the win and loss is not an option. Remember that in a free country we have the right to elect new leaders every 4 years. So what you see in the past is not, the today. The today is for the future. If it turns out for the good, we did our best. If it turns for the worst, we did our best.

WAS SADDAM A REAL THREAT ?

HE WAS AN EX - CIA AGENT. SADDAM WAS USED TO

PREVENT IRAN FROM EXPORTING ITS ISLAMIC

PARTY OF GOD REVOLUTION TO THE REST OF THE

MIDDLE EAST REGION AND SHIA MUSLIM COUNTRIES.

SADDAM WAS A U.S. ALLY AT THAT TIME AND WAS ENCOURAGED AND

SUPPLIED WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION BY THE

UNITED STATES TO ATTACK IRAN. THEN SADDAM GOT

SMART -- BETRAYED THE USA AND ATTACKED KUWAIT.

THIS SCARED THE HELL OUT OF THE USA BECAUSE OF

THE OIL RESERVES AND SADDAM ALL OF A SUDDEN

FORGOTTEN ABOUT THEM LIKE RWANDA AND BOSNIA FOR

GENOCIDE. BUT OIL ALL OF A SUDDEN MAKES A

COUNTRY IMPORTANT. AS BUSH SAYS "STRATEGIC"

1) WHAT THREAT ? HIS REGIME LASTED FOR ONLY 3 WEEKS !!!!

2) SADDAM DID NOT EVEN GET ONE FIGHTER PLANE IN THE SKY

3) SADDAM DID NOT USE CHEMICAL WEAPONS

4) SADDAM FIRED 6 MISSLES AT KUWAIT AND ONLY ONE MADE IT THROUGH AND IT CAUSED MINIMAL DAMAGE. --

THE REST OF THE MISSLES WERE TAKEN DOWN BY PATRIOTS

5) SADDAM ONLY MANAGED TO KILL A 170 SOLDIERS.

6) FOR A ARMY FORCE OF 300,000 THAT IS 0.00001 %
WHAT A JOKE.

7) WE ARE GOING TO SPEND A $ 100 BILLION DOLLARS TO PROTECT OURSELVES FROM SUCH A JOKE HARMLESS REGIME --- WHAT A WASTE OF TAX PAYERS HARD EARNED DOLLARS.

ALL THE STATUES, FEAR, REPUBLICAN GUARDS, SADDAM FEDEYEEN TURNED OUT TO BE BULL SHIT. ALL WERE WEAK --- ALL HYPE

WHAT A CONSPIRACY --- BUT THE SMALL TOWN FAMILY

OR MILITARY MAN OR WOMEN DOESN'T SEE THE BIG

WOULD RUMSFELD, TOMMY FRANKS, OR BUSH SEND THEIR

ECONOMIC WAR . I WOULD LOVE IT IF SOME ONE ASKED

CIA CUTS A DEAL WITH SADDAM -- LAST MINUTE !!!!!

ACCORDING TO THE INTERNATIONAL NEWS AGENCY -- BAGHDAD BUREAU

WHEN U.S. SOLDIERS ARRIVED AT BAGHDAD AIRPORT -- CIA CUT A DEAL WITH SADDAM AND SONS AND TOP MILITARY OFFICIALS TO ALLOW THE RUSSIANS TO EXILE THEM TO AN UNDISCLOSED ISLAND OFF GREECE --- IN RETURN FOR GIVING UP BAGHDAD AND NOT USING CHEMICAL WEAPONS.

THIS IS WHY THE IRAQIS DID NOT USE WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION AND THE SO CALLED SADDAM FEDEYEEN AND REPUBLICAN GUARDS DID NOT PUT UP A FIGHT IN BAGHDAD AND TIKRIT. SADDAMS HOME TOWN.

ALL THE TOP OFFICALS FLED ON RUSSIAN SPECIAL OPERATIONS HELICOPTERS AND THE ARMY COLLAPSED.

THE U.S.A GOVERNMENT WANTS TO COVER THIS UP FROM THE GENERAL AMERICAN PUBLIC JUST LIKE PREVIOUS EVENTS SUCH AS ASSASINATION OF JOHN F. KENNEDY.

THIS IS WHY THE MEDIA GAME AND PENTAGON BRIEFINGS AND GAMES AS TO WHERE IS SADDAM CONTINUE. OR IS HE ALIVE OR DEAD.

THE ORDINARY AMERICAN PUBLIC AND THE POOR MILITARY FAMILIES OF DEAD SOLDIERS ARE BEING PLAYED AGAIN BY GOOD OLD UNCLE SAM.

SADDAM AND HIS SONS WILL LIVE COMFORTABLE FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES WITH THE $ 1.5 BILLION DOLLARS IN COVERED UP BANK ACCOUNTS IN SWITZERLAND AND ILES OF MANN.

SADDAM WAS SMART -- HE HELD BACK UNTIL THE LAST MOMMENT. HOWEVER, WHEN HE SAW THE TROOPS AT THE GATES OF BAGHDAD HE DECIDED TO GIVE UP INSTEAD OF COMMITING SUICIDE OR USING CHEMICAL WEAPONS THAT WOULD HAVE KILLED HIS OWN PEOPLE AND DESTROY HIS NAME IN HISTORY FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS TO COME.

IT WAS IN THE U.SA. BEST INTEREST TO REDUCE AMERICAN, BRITISH, AUSTRALIAN CASULTIES , IF SADDAM USED CHEMICAL WEAPONS. ALSO IT WOULD HAVE CONTAMINATED BAGHDAD. THE USA TOOK ALL THIS INTO ACCOUNT AND DECIDED IT IS IN THEIR BEST INTEREST TO GET RID OF SADDAM BY NEGOTIATION.

IN 25 TO 60 YEARS THE FILES WILL BE DE CLASSIFIED BY THE CIA AND THE NEXT GENERATION OF AMERICANS WILL LEARN OF THE BETRAYAL OF THEIR GOVERNMENT.

BY THE WAY THE US TROOPS DIDN,T GUARD THE PRICELESS ANTIQUES AND ARTIFACTS IN THE MUSEUM BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN INSTRUCTED TO LET IRAQIS WIPE OUT THEIR ROOTS OF CIVILIZATION SO THE FUTURE GENERATIONS WILL NOT KNOW THEIR ROOTS AND A NEW WESTERN IRAQ WILL EMERGE WITHOUT TRACES OF PREVIOUS CULTURE AND LESS CHANCE TO ALLOW PEOPLE TO CHANGE THE REGIME IN THE FUTURE.

IF THEY DONT HAVE PROOF ABOUT THEIR ROOTS, THEY WON'T ASK FOR CHANGE IN 20 YEARS FROM NOW. THEY WILL BE BORN INTO A WESTERN IRAQ AND THE FUTURE GENERATIONS WILL ADAPT TO THIS.

An Ode to Baghdad Bob

By Jeff Scism

Ah, what sorrow at your passing, dear Bob,
after all you were just doing your job.
To tell the truth, for your people to see,
Just the way Saddam wanted it to be.

And to be sure in Great Satan's land,
you had supporters who would clap their hands,
at every twist and turn of your story,
after all it promoted Saddam's glory.

For we could see clearly in the light,
that the news was "live" and ever so right,
and you said it is all just illusion,
while US Tanks emerged from the confusion.

Those on far left joined in your dance,
at the Oscars, in the West Wing, and all across France.
While naysayers sweated and wrung their hands,
They danced your tune, and joined the Chick's Band.

But ever so sure, as the sun does rise,
Flashes and smoke, tracers lit the skies.
And what should you hear each morning at dawn?
The roar of jet-thunder, and the crack of the Bombs.

As Baghdad crumbles and the regime falls apart,
You find yourself alone, making a new start.
For all have left you holding the bag,
to face the music, and your tongue awag.

Saddam, Saddam, the empty cry,
again "in the rubble", Americans reply.
Was it him, or just another bad dream,
could it be true, what could it mean?

Your story is false and the world has told
That for you and yours there is only one road.
The truth is now fiction, and the word is a lie,
For you face the facts, and still you deny.

Oh, Bob, Oh Bob, what could you do?
To tell false facts, and a story untrue
Little was gained and the more to lose
now they just hit you with shoes.
