Overall military analysis in Times

Michael Gordon, the NY Times Military analyst talks about how the military reached this point so quickly and looks ahead at the strategy for Baghdad, both militarily and psychologically, in an article titled, "A Tightening of the Noose."

Excerpt: The American strategy at this point is to maintain the military momentum and the psychological pressure on Saddam Hussein and his forces. To take on the Iraqis the Americans can be expected to isolate the city and cut off the routes from the capital.

His conclusion: Nobody is saying the war is over. But American commanders seemed more confident than ever. The storming of the airport today was an important military and psychological blow because it had been a well-defended target.

I suppose one advantage of basing Abrams tanks out of the airport is that there ought to be quite a bit of Jet A (or equivalent) already around, as well as a fuel distribution system. An Abrams has around a 1000 gal fuel tank -- not very much, in comparison to what it takes to fill an airplane's tanks.

I hope Gen Wallace brought his Amex card, though...

As a student of military history I have to say Michael Gordon one of the top three military analyst working in journalism. Kudos to the NYTimes.
