U.S.: Iran will infiltrate 5 Iraqi cities
"Iran's senior leadership decided last month to send irregular paramilitary units across their border with Iraq to harass American soldiers once Saddam Hussein's regime fell, according to U.S. intelligence reports." Cool! We get to start killing Iranians before the UN tells us not to! Posted by: Cowboy Bob at April 3, 2003 04:17 PMWho asked them to the party? Posted by: jamesbray at April 3, 2003 04:30 PMI am an Iranian and the entire Iran supports the War and Americans. Iranian people hope that US will give them a helping hand to get rid of this terrorist regime of Iran. ACTIONS BY IRANIAN GOVERNMENT DOES NOT REPRESENT THE PEOPLE OF IRAN WHO HATE THE MULLAHS Kambiz ... I have thought the same things by watching external reports. Do you think it's mostly the younger citizens of Iran or the populous on whole? Posted by: Patrick Grote at April 3, 2003 04:41 PMThe ayatollahs are asking for it. 95% of Iranian population hate the Ayatollahs. The invaded our country, destroyed our culture and are financing terrorist acts around the world. They should be next to be destroyed. Iranians are so excited because they are smelling freedom. Posted by: kambiz at April 3, 2003 04:51 PMIranian regime organized an anti war demonstration in Tehran and from eight million Iranians living in Tehran only five thousand showed up. I am an Iranian. God bless President Bush for his great vision not falling for the Ayatollahs BS as Clinton did. Posted by: ramin at April 3, 2003 04:59 PMLet us hope those extremists who are in danger of being hit by Amercan missiles realise that the only way forward is to not go the way Saddam has chosen. they only way to deal with these regimes is to destroy them. Democracy does not mean anything TO THEM. YES. IT IS VERY TRUE THAT IRANIANS ARE HOPING FOR AMERICAN INTERVENTION. I AM AN PERSIAN TOO Iranians on this page, Please do not ask us to go in without trying to get there by yourselves first. Self-reliance can work wonders. Plus it saves US lives. I would suspect they might get shot for doing that adam Posted by: me at April 3, 2003 05:34 PMWho takes UPI seriously? You guys know they are owned by the Moonies right? There are more bogus stories in UPI then in Pravda. Tehran knows fully well we can see an ant crossing that border. I think this story is a crock. here is a quote: Ok firstly it is Badr, not Baddr but it is not an "Iranian oppositon group," it is an Iraqi group. I really doubt some of the "iranians" commenting on this thread, they surely would have known the basic errors in this story and mention them. Posted by: upiskeptic at April 3, 2003 05:56 PMI don't doubt the Iranian posters here at all, because their comments match up with statements that have come out of the mouths of ordinary Iranians for more than a year now. The hatred of the mullahs is very deep and very real. Even the New York Times (even them!) have reported on the depth of anger and hatred that most Iranians feel toward the freaks that Khomeini brought with him. The Iranian people, just like the ordinary Iraqis aren't armed. Totalitarian states NEVER allow ordinary citizens to own weapons. (I'm not a gun owner, but I certainly understand why the 2nd Amendment is important) "Rising" up against a government usually, but not always requires either that the people revolt OR that the army will no longer support the regime or is destroyed(USSR, Philippines, Yugoslavia). Unfortunately, unless Iran is stupid enough to get into in Iraq, I don't see direct US intervention...but we are going to be extremely supportive of the Iranian people. Bush's grand design is clear to anyone paying attention. Once Iraq is liberated, the pressure on the Iranian regime (pro-US countries on both flanks) and Syria (same) is going to become enormous. If we're smart, and I think we are, we're going to flood the airwaves with American music, films, and news about what it's like to live free. It is entirely possible that Iran will have a "people power" type revolt...if the armed forces help the people or, at least, stop supporting the damn mullahs. Posted by: R. McLeod at April 4, 2003 03:49 AMupiskeptic, addressing specifics: It's spelled "Badr" correctly just one sentence later, so you've clearly picked up a typo. The context seems to indicate that the author meant to identify the Badr Brigades' political wing, the Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI), as an Iranian-based Iraqi opposition group. That could have been phrased more felicitously. I don't think your attribution of their ownership is justified, though. UPI isn't perfect, and they do have a more notable slant to the right than the other wire services, but some of their political and foreign policy analysis is very good. They're not as easily dismissed as Drudge or Debka. Moving away from your derail: This woudl fit well with one view of Iranian strategy, which was to use the US to destroy their enemy Saddam, but do all they can within deniability to keep the US presence from becoming just as significant a threat. The instruction through Hakim to sit out the war is somewhat ominous, however useful it is to us in the short run. Iran couldn't keep from meddling in Afghanistan, and they probably retain the strategic objective of controlling the Shatt al Arab strait (i.e. denying Iraq access to the Gulf) and gaining influence with the Kurds in the north (to play them off against the Turks if nothing else). At the same time the US has clearly made long strides forward in developing a working relationship with Tehran. This is a mixed report, and indicates that Iran is playing its cards close to its chest with the hopes of taking advantage at a later time.
