Rumsfeld Complains Syria Still Helping Iraq
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld accused Syria on Thursday of continuing to allow shipments of military equipment into Iraq in defiance of a U.S. warning. During a Pentagon briefing on Thursday, Rumsfeld said: "We have seen that Syria is continuing to conduct itself the way it was prior to the time I said what I said." Rumsfeld did not state specifically the nature of the alleged continuing shipments nor did he say what actions, if any, the United States would take. Rumsfeld previously said the shipments were hostile acts that threatened the lives of U.S. forces in Iraq, adding that the United States would hold the Syrian government accountable for such shipments. Syria borders western Iraq. Rumsfeld on Thursday also said the he did not know what Iran's reaction was to his warning last week about the alleged presence inside Iraq of "hundreds" of armed Iraqi Shiite Muslim forces opposed to the government of President Saddam Hussein who are trained and financed by the Iranians. "But I have not seen anything recently on the part of Iran that ... is terribly disturbing," Rumsfeld said. He did not specify whether that meant there no longer were any such Badr Brigade forces operating inside Iraq. Comments
Buh bye! Posted by: Andrew at April 3, 2003 03:56 PMThis is par for the course, isn't it? Syria usually goes to war without declaring it. Did the same thing in 1967. Posted by: me at April 3, 2003 03:59 PMI told them NOT to, but they are STILL doing it!. Note that when you have shown you will put an iron rod of tanks up the a** of a country that doesn't do what you tell them to, your words become more than hot air. Posted by: rebmiami at April 3, 2003 04:02 PMWhy does Reuters keep using "Night vision goggles" as an example of "military supplies and material and equipment"?? What else are in those supplies that have got Rhummy's knickers in a twist?? Surely, some thing more dangerous than NVGs are crossing the border? Posted by: Jim Hogue at April 3, 2003 04:17 PMWondering, DEBKA had that report that Saddam may be in Syria. If so, not the safest place as since Syria is doing a good job of upsetting the U.S.. Course, being on the Mediterranean, not that far a sail to the south of France. That would be safe as they love him there. I can envision Saddam lounging in a villa in the south of France. Posted by: mog at April 3, 2003 04:18 PMPerhaps the Command Post staff should go ahead and add a Syria and Iran column at the top of the BLOG. Would that be a preemptive BLOGGING? Posted by: U.S. Cavalry at April 3, 2003 04:21 PMHe said wha? If we run this thru our trusty babelfish english->french->german->english, what he really said was: We have, since Syria leads itself further the kind, which it took place before time I said, what I said. Posted by: Ed at April 3, 2003 04:23 PMIt would be a blessing if Syria entered the war on the side of Iraq at this point. It would save us all time and rationals. Posted by: Yank at April 3, 2003 04:41 PMDidn't they just blow up an oil pipeline to Syria? Costing them already..... Posted by: Dan at April 3, 2003 04:58 PMMaybe 4th Infantry will have something to do after all ..... Posted by: BradDad at April 3, 2003 05:25 PM
"Rationals" are muslims who've had the jihad kicked out of them. Posted by: Crusader at April 3, 2003 06:23 PMThink he meant "rationales" Reminds me of Rummy's comments to a reporter asking him about *gasp* carpet bombing in Afghanistan. He looked over his glasses and said something like "That's for KILLING them. They could surrender, but they won't, so we are going to KILL them." ... "I TOLD them not to aid the Saddamites..." Posted by: PeolesDru at April 4, 2003 01:28 AM"'Rationals' are muslims who've had the jihad kicked out of them." Chortle. And a new term enters the lexicon. Posted by: M Joyce at April 4, 2003 02:06 AMf*** all of u...........syria is aiding the iraqi people becuz they aided syria in harsh times Posted by: Malek at April 9, 2003 04:42 AMPost a comment
