Quartering troops
Fox TV just had an interview with a woman who claimed that when she called her sister in Baghdad, a strange man answered the phone. When her sister got on the phone, she told this woman that the Feyadeen were staying in houses all around her neighborhood "to protect the people". The woman believes they are probably staying in houses all over the city and will be firing at coalition troops from civilian houses. Another great argument for an armed citizenry. Too bad the citizens of Iraq have no right to bear arms. Posted by: Steve at April 3, 2003 02:13 PMActually, Gun ownership is legal in Iraq and very prevalent. Posted by: ND at April 3, 2003 02:15 PMDidn't somebody include this as one of those reasons to start a revolution over. Americal? Amerigal? One of those funny has-been countries? :) They may not have the right to bear arms. How about the right to arm bears? It had to be said. Posted by: Fred Kiesche at April 3, 2003 02:16 PMSo far as I have been able to gather, gun ownership is more legal and widespread in Iraq than in the US, to the point that many US states have specific restrictions on automatic weapons ownership in comparison where it seems completely unrestricted in Iraq. Even in states (like here in Oregon) that there is no statewide restriction on automatic weapons, you still have to jump through the Class III federal red tape to actually get ahold of one. No, ND, Iraqi civilians may only bear those arms (and hands--see Saddam's latest quote, "fight them with your hands!") that have not been cut off by the government. ND - Then I am wrong. Fred - Are there bears in Iraq? : ) Posted by: Steve at April 3, 2003 02:21 PMIt's prevalent among regime 'supporters', ND. (Supporters in quotes because I expect that many Baath party members are members for their own protection, as is the case in most one-party systems.) Posted by: Kathy K at April 3, 2003 02:21 PMThey'll also probably be shooting anyone who tries to leave those residences. Posted by: GizmoMkI at April 3, 2003 02:21 PMI thought all the phones were out in Bagdhad? Posted by: georgiabulldog1 at April 3, 2003 02:21 PMNot cell phones. Posted by: Kathy K at April 3, 2003 02:23 PMNo cell network in Baghdad. Just a small GSM set up in the Kurdish north. Posted by: mik at April 3, 2003 02:28 PMYou don't need firearm to get rid of them. Just put rat poison in his food and water. Give them something that keeps them in the john most of the time. That will do it peacefully for all involved. Posted by: viewfrabove at April 3, 2003 02:31 PMSteve - Russia has been sending bears down their for years. And their armed. Posted by: FOG at April 3, 2003 02:39 PMRussian bears - I wonder if they are white? If so, their hides will make excellent flags.... Posted by: Steve at April 3, 2003 02:40 PMSure, and they can be held up on the end of an AK-47. Posted by: FOG at April 3, 2003 02:46 PMAmen! Posted by: Steve at April 3, 2003 02:52 PMI read that while guns are somewhat available, ammo is strictly controlled. I recall seeing a vid clip of a bagdad gunstore that was 'selling out' of weapons before war started...it looked like one glass cabinet with a dozen or so .380 pistols, and a few waxpaper bundles of decade old Russian surplus cartridges.
