Pentagon removes Geraldo Rivera from Iraq

The on-again/off-again relationship between Geraldo and Iraq has finally come to an end.

Fox News correspondent Geraldo Rivera and his crew were flown out of Iraq Wednesday by members of the Army's 101st Airborne Division.

"I think I will go back to Kuwait. I feel like I have been scolded," Rivera told [Eyewitness News reporter Dean]Staley.

Man, how long did it take them to get him out? Geez.

And Fox still doesn't comment much on this, it's an embarassment for the network. NBC acted better here, with Arnett.

It was a brave and audacious Special Operations force that finally removed him from Iraq.

Regime change. It's not just for tryants.

Posted by: Stephen at April 2, 2003 05:41 PM

Well, that is because NBC is a network used to getting egg on their face, Fox is still new and is pretending like it didn't happen. I think they should have Geraldo go on and apologize to the "rats" at his former employers for the bashing he did when they were right - he was getting kicked out. My question ~ who let him in?

Posted by: Rizian at April 2, 2003 05:41 PM

There may have been other things going on for the 101st. If fuel is really $150 a gallon (reported here yesterday or day before), imagine the cost of just flying this guy out. Not to mention time and equipment costs. They may have waited until there was a flight with room going to Kuwait (I'm just guessing though).

Probably wasn't safe or prudent to let him drive.

I can't decide who to cast my vote for in this year's "Buffoonolympics", Geraldo or Al Sharpton..

Posted by: Cymtex at April 2, 2003 05:43 PM

And just as he was about to open Saddam's secret vault.....

Posted by: Bees at April 2, 2003 05:45 PM

at least he didn't break his nose again...

Posted by: rizian at April 2, 2003 05:47 PM

Aw shucks with all his combat experience with chair-to-chair combat with neo-Nazis.

Posted by: Rich at April 2, 2003 05:48 PM

No more warpath for Chief Chair-in-the-Face.

Posted by: Glen Wishard at April 2, 2003 05:51 PM

How long can Fox pretend this didn't happen?

I watched O'Reilly the other night when his guests were criticizing Geraldo (on a discussion about Arnet). O'Reilly told them "Well, you guys don't know the whole story. Just wait and see". Man, how embarassing.

We all saw the video of Geraldo drawing a little map. Let me guess, his excuse is that he probably will claim he cleared the info with somebody before going into that.

Posted by: ElCapitanAmerica at April 2, 2003 05:52 PM

Back to hunting down Osama and shooting him like a dog for Geraldo I guess.

Posted by: Mark Buehner at April 2, 2003 05:54 PM

"the whole story" will be whatever Fox wants it to be.

yeah, he was framed...

Posted by: Bri at April 2, 2003 05:55 PM

I really don't understand why Fox has been hanging on to Geraldo at all - the man has zero journalistic credibility as far as I'm concerned. He was embarrasing in Aghganistan and has proven to be a loose cannon time and time again.

I also can't believe, given his history for histrionics, that the military agreed to embed him.

Fox should dump him. I'm sure Peter needs some company in the U.K.

MSNBC 1 -- Fox 0

If Fox continues to pretend this never happened, it will lose credibility as a network.

"FOx NEws -- We Report, You Decide, except for anything remotely related to News Corporation or any of its subsidiaries!"

Posted by: yeah! at April 2, 2003 05:57 PM

One point of note ~I am not a Geraldo fan~ but as he was not officially embedded with the 101 he really didn't have to abide by the rules of embeds, he may not have even been wholly aware of them. He may have been treated as an imbed, due to his "celebrity" status, but he would not have had a "personal officer" with him as a censor or to erase the map he was drawing in the sand.

Personally being in the land of the 101 I am so glad he is gone, the families here deserve reporting not sensationalistic slap journalism.

i've said it once and i'll say it again...he was comic relife...lolololol

I agree with all of the above.. But, I don't know why, there's something about Geraldo that I feel bad for him. He's like a dumb animal. Maybe I'm not totaly up on his history, but it never seems like he has malicsious intent or ill will, just that he's incredibly dumb. Not that it excuses his actions, believe me I know that, but I just can't get quite as angry at him as I can arnett, who had such ill intent.

Anyone else see what I'm getting at? By all means, get him the hell out of there. He's a stupid dope.. I just can't muster the desire to do anything but smack him. Dan Rather and the rest, Fisk, etc.. Those people I would like to drop kick, to make the comparison.

Posted by: Ben Noah at April 2, 2003 06:00 PM

Have to agree with Ben Noah. Geraldo is just dopey. Fox should have dumped him long ago for just that reason.

Arnett, OTOH, is borderline treasonous.

Posted by: Ariel at April 2, 2003 06:07 PM

Ben;

I think I see what you are saying.

I saw some of his recent broadcasts from Afghanistan. He had a big group of soldiers and praised them a lot. The soldiers seemed to enjoy it, as I'm sure it's not all fun and games there.

So the guy in some sense, roots for our troops, roots for our side, openly. So maybe that's where the symphaty come from.

In Iraq, he tried to do the same, but for some boneheaded reason he screwed up in the worst way. And he has to be kicked out.

The guy is barely a journalist. He's like a version of Jerry Springer who thinks he's a journalist.

Posted by: ElCapitanAmerica at April 2, 2003 06:10 PM

I second what Ben Noah said.

And add: Geraldo is an enigna. We will never understand Geraldo. Geraldo will make another comeback, and we will be as much in his mysterious power when it happens as we have been in the past. Geraldo had sex with Chris Evert. Geraldo has the last-laugh 40 million dollar bank account. Geraldo's power will not be so easily destroyed.

Posted by: americanstreet at April 2, 2003 06:14 PM

I don't know... I can't stand the guy. Whenever I see him on Fox I switch to TMC (next channel in my cable) and relax watching Jimmy Stewart or, more soothing, Ingrid Bergman.

I did see his sand graph performance live, however (I must have been too sleepy to bother with the remote). Even his own colleagues were making fun of him because the art was soo crude. He did not reveal anything more sensitive than any other imbed has. If he was removed it was because somebody wanted him to be gone and used this as an excuse.

God knows he has enough enemies.

Posted by: Fred Hill at April 2, 2003 06:14 PM

Fox will probably let him come back and give us his side of the story. You know, "we report/you decide". It should be a really good show. At least I can get my patriotic fix at Fox.

Posted by: rulen at April 2, 2003 06:15 PM

Good comments.. Americanstreet has a hillarious one up there above.. It's true. This guy is like a cat. his career keeps coming back to life.. He really is a puzzle to be solved..

Can you imagine opening up a time capsul in 500 years and finding a VHS cassette of 6 hours of Geraldo's career, in vignette form?

*Shudder*

Posted by: Ben Noah at April 2, 2003 06:18 PM

It says the 101 Flew him out it never stated they landed and let him off.
Maybe just maybe something good came out of this. Like flying lessons?

Posted by: Genghis at April 2, 2003 06:24 PM

I heard a blurb that the famous "map" might have been forgiven, but he also blurted out the exact time of an upcoming operation in the area. The Iraqis doubtless knew where troops were, but not when they'd move - until G told 'em.

Posted by: John Anderson at April 2, 2003 07:24 PM

Quite disappointing. A war just isn't the same without Geraldo. It's like having a boxing prizefight without that parachuting lunatic jumping in.

Posted by: Bob at April 2, 2003 07:36 PM

Btw, the reason Fox holds into Geraldo is because he fits very well with their modus operandi. Faced with the choice of offering either honest, credible news coverage and mindless, grandiose sensationalism, Fox will go with the latter almost every time. Because Rupert Murdoch known that that's what the majority of his viewers crave. And in the realm of journalism, Geraldo Rivera is the Michael Jordan of mindless sensationalism.

"If I kill all the reporters today, I will have news from hell tonight" alleged quote by General US Grant during the civil war.

Ok Jerry, time for a career change. You are a bonafide son of a bitch!
You and your pictures in the sand will join Hanoi Jane in the traitor hall of fame. When you close your eyes to sleep, if you can, I hope the images of fallen true heros of this country haunt you!
Join the worthless baggage of the USA, to include Al Sharpton, Jessie Jackson, Hanoi Jane, Bill Clinton, Farrakan, Hitlery Clinton, the state of California, and all of the other left wing liberal bleeding heart liberals!

I cant help but laugh at everyone bashing Geraldo. He is a exeptional reporter and thank god we have people that arent afraid to give thair true opinions even if the government doesnt like them. at the end of the day hes a famous millionare with more awards for journalism than almost anyone else with 40 million in the bank. and you are all just couch potatoes.

Posted by: Ray at April 6, 2003 03:06 AM

I think Geraldo is right, he should go back to Kuwait-and stay there. Nothing like helping out the enemy. I wonder who paid for his ticket home?
