Al Jazeera Riles Coalition, Retains Access
Interesting perspectives in The Washington Times on Al Jazeera's relationship with coalition and U.S. forces, which take shall we say a dim view of the Arab news service but continues to grant it access: An unrepentant Al Jazeera, the Arab world's most widely watched television channel, has enraged coalition commanders with its mix of aggressive reportage, dramatic and shocking images, and sharp commentary... Al Jazeera, like it or not is a major major force. compared to other media in moslem states it is pretty mild. As far as some of their controversial pictures, etc., I remember seeing pictures of scores of dead iraqi's from the "highway of death" in the US media. Although news media are not held to the Geneva convention, we have also seen pictures of Iraqi POW's on our media. this is not to say that Al Jazeera gives a balanced picture, but in war, no one does. I'm less concerned with Al Jazeera's slant than the fact that the Arab street eats whatever sh*t they feed them. This is making Arabs look really bad. I know some Arabs in the US, they are not stupid, but Al Jazeera makes them look that way. Posted by: Cowboy Bob at April 2, 2003 01:22 PMThere is no violated Geneva Convention rule by merely showing a group of POW's standing or sitting. Please end the Geneva Convention misinformation; the issue with POW's on TV is not as you present it. Filmed POW's are not allowed to be demeaned or humiliated on TV, that is the Geneva Convention point that Al-Jazeera has failed to use discretion in protecting the lives and famiies of these POW's. Al-Jazeera has lost credibility as an objective and credible news source from those whom would want to know and want to understand the Arab perspective. Posted by: stop the propaganda at April 2, 2003 01:35 PMI tend to agree that both sides have shown POW's in ways outside the spirit of the Geneva Conventions. as far as the statement: "Filmed POW's are not allowed to be demeaned or humiliated on TV, that is the Geneva Convention point." This statement of course is nowhere to be found in the Geneva Conventions either the articles of the conventions we have signed or the ones we have refused to sign. all of this is in the eye of the beholder. I dont know of any legal scholar who would say Al Jazeera is violating the convention. Of course if pople had any idea of what they were talking about they would know it does not refer to news organizations. The conventions, as well as the terms "war crime" and terrorist are being used in ways that are just childish. Posted by: Orson at April 2, 2003 02:31 PMPost a comment
