POW rescued

MSNBC and FoxNews (citing AP) reporting that CENTCOM will announce shortly that an American POW has been rescued. It appears that the POW is one of the crewmembers of the Apache that went down last week. (NOTE: This is a correction to my original post, which indicated that more than one POW had been rescued; also, please note that I am, obviously, sketchy on the details).

POSTSCRIPT: Although all of the details I provide here (other than the fact of a POW being rescued) have been proven incorrect, I'm leaving this post up to preserve the comment thread. I suppose it also serves the purpose of illustrating the difficulty of ascertaining the veracity of initial reports.

MSNBC said it was a female type POW, probably the one with the lost maintenance unit!

Posted by: JackRyan at April 1, 2003 07:14 PM

Awesome!!!! How did we do it??????

Posted by: Yay!!!!! at April 1, 2003 07:15 PM

This is still conjecture...supposedly the press conference is delayed pending notification of families...

Posted by: JackRyan at April 1, 2003 07:16 PM

Man, this has got to be driving family members nuts. Unless we rescued ALL prisoners of war, somebody is in for a big let-down.

Press needs to shut the f*** up.

Hey Command Post broke the story! Whoa!

Posted by: ElCapitanAmerica at April 1, 2003 07:17 PM

I don't know if people here heard the build up for all this on television, but, though it's great that a POW has been rescued, this is the most asinine behaviour the media has engaged in from the start of this war. Pathetic.

> this is the most asinine behaviour the media has engaged in from the start of this war

Well, the Pentagon is quoted in CNN (or MSNBC?), so they screwed up too.

Why did they leak it and then postpone the announcement?

Posted by: ElCapitanAmerica at April 1, 2003 07:19 PM

AP first broke the story...but I saw it on command post first...no to be pessimistic but I quote many a general when I say...

"Its never as good as it sounds and its never as bad as it sounds"

Posted by: JackRyan at April 1, 2003 07:20 PM

It's pathetic because they built it up like it was an announcement that the top leadership had been capture and surrender talks were underway (or something on that scale). CNN (which I loathe) and any other news organisation that reported the leaks probably did it so as not to look stupid, like FOX does now (I love FOX, by the way).

Posted by: americanstreet at April 1, 2003 07:22 PM

My imagination is running wild but wouldn't it be cool if it was Cmdr. Speicher from Gulf War 1? That would really bring the house down....

Posted by: JackRyan at April 1, 2003 07:22 PM

CNN : Female POW

U.S. Official Says American POW Rescued

WASHINGTON (AP) -- An American prisoner of war has been rescued in Iraq, a U.S. official said Tuesday.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said U.S. Central Command was announcing the rescue in Qatar later Tuesday.

The Pentagon has listed seven Americans as captured by Iraq since the outbreak of the war.

The official said the rescue involved one of the seven.

The development came as American ground troops battled Republican Guard troops around Karbala, a holy Shiite Muslim city about 50 miles south of Baghdad. It was unknown whether the fighting was related to the POW situation.

Posted by: Charyl at April 1, 2003 07:23 PM

Question - if it was, in fact, an Apache crewman that was rescued, what happened to the other one? Why would you split up your prisoners (effectively doubling the number of people you need to guard them, thus reducing your fighting force)? I'm afraid that it's going to be good news mixed with very bad news.

Posted by: George at April 1, 2003 07:25 PM

If they only rescued one, that might not bode well for the other six...hope it was one that was held separately!

Posted by: JackRyan at April 1, 2003 07:25 PM

Er, the rescue of 1 POW requires bringing everyone out of bed? There's got to be something else here.

Posted by: Shawn Pickrell at April 1, 2003 07:25 PM

NOT FAIR to release info ahead of time. Too many families holding their breath. Is our need to know more important than these families. Agree the media should shut up.

Posted by: Janet at April 1, 2003 07:25 PM

MSNBC : Explosions in Baghdad right now.

Posted by: ElCapitanAmerica at April 1, 2003 07:26 PM

The fact that FOX knew what the announcement would be just makes them look even more idiotic. POW rescued is great news, but that build up with beyond inane. Now we're not even getting any live shots from the new fighting with the Medina division. Nothing interesting is being shown, and moderately big (though very good) news is being hyped like it's the surrender of Germany in '45. Again, pathetic.

Posted by: americanstreet at April 1, 2003 07:26 PM

I hope the delay isn't because bodies have been found and families need to be notified

Posted by: ac at April 1, 2003 07:26 PM

It was actually a mathematical leak-test by the Pentagon to see how long a good leak could be kept secret. About 5 minutes.

Posted by: BobbyV at April 1, 2003 07:26 PM

I agree with Shawn.

Getting one of our own back is terrific beyond words. There is no way to diminish that.

But a special CenCom briefing?

I'm sorry, but that looks cheesy.

Gotta be something else.

I really hope so.

Posted by: Michael at April 1, 2003 07:28 PM

Succesful rescue mission , CENTCOM.
Soldier returned to coalition area.

Posted by: ElCapitanAmerica at April 1, 2003 07:28 PM

Centcom briefing was 5 seconds long. For some reason, no name given.

Either the others are dead, or these guys are just idiots. The other families must be going through hell right now.

Posted by: ElCapitanAmerica at April 1, 2003 07:29 PM

Jesus, that is pathetic. He didn't even have details. The media coverage of this war has been a zero on a scale of 10 in every way. This just highlights all the idiocy and incompetance.

19 years old. Rescued. They have confirmed. missing since 3/23.

Posted by: Charyl at April 1, 2003 07:33 PM

So did the reporters ask how badly the plan to get her had messed up and if they should have used more troops, and oh yeah was there any civilians hurt in the operation?

Posted by: Amused at April 1, 2003 07:33 PM

MSNBC : Rescued by US Special Forces.

Whoo-ho, our SF are the best!

Posted by: ElCapitanAmerica at April 1, 2003 07:35 PM

I'm nervous for the fate of the other POW's...Saddams henchman will feel as if they have to make a statement...

Posted by: rose at April 1, 2003 07:36 PM

OK, I don't know how to spell "An Nasarriyah" :-)

Posted by: ElCapitanAmerica at April 1, 2003 07:37 PM

This raises serious questions about the Media's plan for covering the war. Who approved the plan? Were enough reporters sent to the region? Why must they be awakened in the middle of the night? Is there enough Evian in their hotel rooms?
Clearly, reports are getting bogged down in the crush of trying to be the first to break the news. Could this become a quagmire?
