Allies Say Iraqis Warm to Their Presence

From News-Journal/AP: British and U.S. officials reported signs Tuesday that the tide of war in southern Iraq may be turning in their favor: Iraqis are increasingly warming to their presence, and some troops felt safe enough to wear berets rather than combat helmets in towns firmly under their control.

Does Basra have electricity and water yet? If not, we need to get crackin'. It would certainly go a long way toward helping our situation there.

I don't like that sign of complacency with the non-use of helmets. When you start feeling secure about an area is usualy the best time for an enemy to strike.

Wearing berets while patrolling has been normal practice in Northern Ireland for a number of years. Also, I seem to remember British troops quickly switching to this while on operations in Sierra Leone.

The Brits are deliberately wearing berets in villages and small towns now deemed to be safe - because it shows an non-aggressive but confident posture to the locals. And in turn, the locals are more likely to provide vital intelligence about who and where the badhats are.

But there will be plenty of vigilance.
