Officer Says Iraqis Are Skeptical of U.S. Supporting Revolt
From the New York Times: The United States, through its past acts, is largely to blame for the failure of Iraq's Shiite majority to rise in revolt against Saddam Hussein, a senior military commander at the United States Central Command said here today.Posted By Alan at March 31, 2003 06:49 PM | TrackBack Comments
We screwed them in 1991. I would be scared as well. Posted by: Patrick Grote at March 31, 2003 06:51 PMI may be mistaken, but didn't the UN pass a resolution forbidding the US to "assassinate" or otherwise remove Saddam back in '91? Posted by: Bob Jones at March 31, 2003 06:57 PMWe were supposed to liberate Kuwait. We encouraged the Iraqis to uprise and then we left them to be slaughtered. It's a perfect example of how America lost it's way and was being dragged into the global community's value system and not ours. We're back on track now and doing the right things for the right reasons. Posted by: Patrick Grote at March 31, 2003 06:59 PMI agree with you, but I think we tried to convince the international community that we should go all the way and were "denied" Posted by: Bob Jones at March 31, 2003 07:02 PMI wonder what the NYT's position was on going all the way to Baghdad in '91. Of course, now that it is widely recognized as a major error, I doubt they will remind us. Posted by: T. Hartin at March 31, 2003 07:13 PMThe ironic thing is if we get out now, the reprisals will make '91 look like a picnic. It'll be the worst genocide since Pol Pot. The fault in '91 was when Bush Senior encouraged the revolt and then allowed it to wither on the vine. I hope the special place in Hell reserved for Bush Senior and other world leaders who abandoned the innocents will be emptied by God's mercy. Posted by: Shawn Pickrell at March 31, 2003 07:41 PM...or filled by God's wrath against those who slaughtered the innocents in the first place. Saddam, et al, are you listening? That's the sound of the fires being stoked. Better bring your asbestos suit! OK, Shawn, should we get UN approval or not? It was the UN, not GWHB who stopped us in '91.
