Freedom MREs?
MSNBC just relayed a report from the French press that the U.S. has cancelled a contract with French companies for production of meals, ready-to-eat ("MRE"; I missed a bit of the report, but I suspect it is for some portion of an MRE, not the entire MRE) for U.S. servicemembers. It was reported as the direct result of French actions in the prelude to the current campaign in Iraq. Posted By SunDevilDog at March 28, 2003 03:22 PM | TrackBackI'll bet they eliminated the frogs legs... Posted by: Corky at March 28, 2003 03:27 PMThis is good news. I heard the troops never liked the dehydrated truffles or freeze-dried creme' broule. Posted by: travis at March 28, 2003 03:28 PMNo more Chicken ala King!? Can I re-enlist? Posted by: Thoth at March 28, 2003 03:29 PMFantastique!!!!!!!!!!!!! Glad to see we getting them back as much as we can. Posted by: Bill at March 28, 2003 03:30 PMrummy dummy Pako: Nice comments dumbass, because obviously freedom of choice isn't a virtue in a free society. Posted by: FaaQ at March 28, 2003 03:33 PMAnd who says the US can't act just as childish as the French.. Rummy.. Focus on Iraq... The French will get theirs... but not before Saddam gets his. Posted by: Mark at March 28, 2003 03:35 PMpako: Thank you for your advice as to what America needs. And speaking of liberty, I urge you to do some research on the consonance of such with sharia law, because that is what ole France will be enjoying soon enough. Then you can lecture US on liberty. Posted by: JB at March 28, 2003 03:35 PMUm, folks, this wasn't Rumsfeld's idea. From what I've seen elsewhere (Rantburg?), it was a Congressman. I read it as a catering company, not the manufacturer of MRE's, and if you have ever read a military PO, no change will be quick. Posted by: Capsu78 at March 28, 2003 03:37 PMNothing childish in letting your so-called-allies know there are real-world consequences to treachery. It's good business. Posted by: JB at March 28, 2003 03:37 PMI've seen on news (some weeks ago) that the US military plans on NOT attending the next French Air Show. It's a very big extravaganza but will be sorely lacking without US attendance. That is, without US attendance there will not be US contracts to buy. Maybe we can just put danishes in those MRE's... Posted by: bill at March 28, 2003 03:46 PMBy the way, I hope that posting conveyed the fact that I am very sketchy on the details; it may be catering and not MREs . . . I think, however, that this doesn't alter the significance of the information; nonetheless, I apologize for any inaccuracies. Posted by: SunDevilDog at March 28, 2003 03:46 PMPako: As another poster has suggested, you really should consider the impact of Sharia on French culture. You are one Vichyite little prick. I think our policy should be to let militant Islam take over France and then nuke it to glass. A song for France We Are France We are France. We hate Jews You thought we had changed. You were wrong. Pako, I hope you learn the dance before the drummer dies. Posted by: don'tknow at March 28, 2003 03:51 PMWhile it's fine to be upset with France, I think this is going a bit too far. We do have an economy to sustain, after all. And we do need to have a large market to sell to. Only selling to Americans isn't going to be enough. Posted by: Lola at March 28, 2003 03:52 PMGuys, Quick rule of thumb for MREs The longer the name, the worse is tastes. If it has a foreign word in the name "Chicken Ala King" it's gonna taste like shit. "ham slice" good short name, can't go wrong with that. I read somewhere they had added almost 80 new thing to MREs since I last had to live on them in the early '90s. Maybe they are better now....but I doubt it! Plus I NEVER got any of the strawberries!! Jim Hogue Posted by: Jim Hogue at March 28, 2003 04:00 PMGuess again, Lola. Our trade balance with France could use a big ol' uptick in our column. There's plenty of other fish in the pond, especially a nice new market gonna open soon in the Middle East! FRANCE HAS ALREADY been boycotting our products for the past couple of decades (under the auspices of "protecting French Culture"). And of course, we're fat enough without their food, and nobody's made a better set of jeans than Levi's... We don't need 'em half as much as they need us. Posted by: acuteanger at March 28, 2003 04:19 PMSince last October, the French company Sodexho has been handling food service at all Marine mess halls in the continental United States under a record-setting $881 million contract. Posted by: feste at March 28, 2003 06:27 PMI had seen referrence to this ENORMOUS contract with Sodexho before, in the Financial Times. Nice one, Rummy ! Posted by: JohninLondon at March 28, 2003 09:59 PMEveryone keeps saying "nice one rummy" FYI It is members of Congress lobbying against Sedexho, not the Pentagon (Rummy). As a matter of some facts, rumors of a cancellation of Sodexho's contract have been around for more than two weeks. http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/030317/175504_1.html But today the Marine corps announced they would definately NOT cancel the contract. This business of boycotts is silly. Let the French and the Germans play at it, it is pointless in the modern world. My next door neighbor told me he was switching from buying a "german" car the other day to an American car. When I told him the "german" car he would have bought was made by US workers and the "American" car was made in Canukistan he couldn't believe it. Lastly I would much rather have fench food in our soldiers' bellies (it is good food) than a cowardly french soldier standing behind him/her.
