A quick search indicates that the only previous mention of this topic on TCP was a link to a similar article a couple of days ago. Since it did not provide any further details... [The Danish P]arliament adopted a proposal to deploy the Navy submarine S.S. Seal and destroyer Olfert Fischer for the US-led war on Iraq.... The two Danish naval vessels have been transferred to American command, PM Anders Fogh Rasmussen announced.... In addition to naval personnel, the Danish war squadron includes a medical team and attaché officers. In total, Denmark will deploy 150-160 troops to Iraq.Posted By Dodd at March 28, 2003 03:10 PM | TrackBack Comments
Welcome aboard.. You brought the good stuff from Amsterdam right? Posted by: Mark at March 28, 2003 03:13 PMIt must be due to Saddam's crimes against the environment. Posted by: AST at March 28, 2003 03:13 PMmark- wrong country. that's holland / the netherlands Posted by: peter at March 28, 2003 03:15 PMWhy would they bring stuff from Amsterdam?!? Posted by: Dodd at March 28, 2003 03:15 PMMaybe they can bring yummy danishes. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Posted by: geauxdallas at March 28, 2003 03:17 PMLast week a "peace" activist dumped the Danish leader with some red liquid (paint or something). They guy just ran up to the PM and threw it on him in front of a bunch of cameras. It was troubling, especially in light of last year's assasination of the Dutch PM and last month's assasination of Serbian PM. Posted by: ptleahy at March 28, 2003 03:21 PM"To kill Saddam or not to kill Saddam, that is the question. The Dutch PM wasn't assassinated last year. The guy was only a candidate. I think it's wonderful that leaders in countries like Denmark and the Netherlands are willing to mingle freely with the public, knowing full well the risks. Granted, the risk is lower there since they don't have the NRA giving every child a free semi-automatic at birth..... Posted by: Buster at March 28, 2003 03:29 PMWhere's my free semi-automatic? I missed that one! Damn. Posted by: travis at March 28, 2003 03:34 PMYeah, really. Why didn't I get mine?!? I even paid my dues on time! Posted by: Dodd at March 28, 2003 03:35 PMOh well.. Back to geography class for me... I would also be troubled if someone pie-faced our Canadian PM... Yes.. that would trouble me... Posted by: Mark at March 28, 2003 03:40 PMI saw that pic of the Danish PM too. I hope he's well protected. I'm a little worried about a "peace" activist taking him out like Pim. Posted by: brian at March 28, 2003 03:41 PMRecently the Danes have started to grapple more or less realistically (for Euro standards) with the problems they've been having because of the numbers of unassimilated muslims in their country -- they've witnessed honor killings and the like. They may have clued in to what kind of threat they may be facing, and that action now is better than disaster later. Posted by: Whackadoodle at March 28, 2003 03:53 PMWelcome friends. Let's get those delicious butter cookies to Iraq, asap. "The Dutch PM wasn't assassinated last year. The guy was only a candidate." Oh, well, that's all right then. Got news for you, Buster - you are just as safe in 95% of the US as you are in Denmark. Back out the inner-city murder rates and the US has a very European homicide rate. Of course, if you lived in Denmark you would be more likely to commit suicide. Posted by: T. Hartin at March 28, 2003 04:01 PMuh, wrong country again? wasn't that honor killing in sweden. and no, sweden didn't win the america's cup, switzerland did. i also think that no country should wage a war against a country that the majority of its citizens can't find on a map. denmark has one of the most racist right-wing government of all european countries (a la Jörg Haider in Austria) and by officially declaring war they can use legislation against their OWN people, i.e. those who want to demonstrate against the war. Denmark info here: See Jörg Haider here: > The pro rata numbers really don't bear that out. If you look at raw numbers, then sure, more murders are in inner cities, but that's because that's where most people live. If you look at the murder rates per capita, places like New York City are actually safer than places like Baton Rouge, LA. Posted by: Bored.to.tears at March 28, 2003 04:12 PMThank goodness for the Danish. If they'd refused to join up, tomorrow we'd be seeing bakeries service Cheese Freedoms. Posted by: Barry at March 28, 2003 04:22 PMNo-body, Is that some kind of statement? The most right wing government in Europe - that doesn't say much... Also, you make an unsubstantiated claim about Denmark in comparing it to Haider in Austria. What has Denmark done similar to Haider? Do some homework, then come back. TV Posted by: tony v at March 28, 2003 04:33 PMTony, you apparently forgot that "racist right-wing government" means "to the right of Maxine Waters." Posted by: Dodd at March 28, 2003 04:53 PMBravo, noble in ww11 and consistant today. If you guys want we will implant you in bahgdad.Vikings in basra huurrahh. Posted by: Ethan Jacoby at March 28, 2003 05:29 PMHow did the phoney baloney research of the anti-gun movement make it into this. A free Semi-auto at birth ? Woo hoo! I am 3/4 norwegian and 1/4 danish. But today, I am 100% danish!
I'm back. Now, Denmark is in the process of doing exactly what Haider did in Austria. Should I just wait until they do it, when everything they have said and done show a clear indication towards creating an atmosphere where non-Danes are simply not welcome. That's not what America was built on, was it? My point was that Denmark sending troops (a submarine to the desert) was at least as much an act of internal affairs as anything else. By declaring war, they can use certain legistlation that couldn't otherwise. Posted by: No-Body at March 29, 2003 08:03 AMPost a comment
