Saddam's cousin sets up tribal council in south
General Ali Hassan al-Majid, a cousin of Saddam Hussein, has formed a military council grouping major tribal leaders in southern Iraq. The southern tribes may play a pivotal role in determining the tide of the current fierce fighting in the outskirts of major southern cities like Basra, Nasiriya, Kerbala land Najaf. Iraq Press has learned that many tribal leaders in exile who have escaped Saddam's reign of terror have headed towards Iraq to entice the tribes at home to rise against the government.

It'd sure be nice to know where he is . . . Posted by: Lola at March 28, 2003 10:08 AMChemical Ali? Posted by: Clyde at March 28, 2003 10:18 AMYes, Chemical Ali (that's what it says in the article) We really need the Iraqi Opposition, now more than ever. We can't win this war without some civilian uprisings SOMEWHERE. Posted by: Michael Levy at March 28, 2003 10:20 AMThe tribes and their importance have definetely been underreported, and possibly underappreciated by our military & government. Just as in Afghanistan, the clans are a lot more important than whether or not they are Shia or Sunni. Posted by: Lloyd at March 28, 2003 11:47 AMPost a comment
