Army Photo Hero Is 9-11 Enlistee

Pfc. Joseph P. Dwyer was photographed recently as he carried a child to safety in a battle zone. The photo has been widely published, and in this Army Times story it turns out he enlisted after learning his brother didn't die in the Twin Towers. Army Times:

The soldier in the picture, Pfc. Joseph P. Dwyer, 26, is still in the field, about 80 miles outside Baghdad with his outfit in the 3rd Infantry Division. [He was misidentified by a superior in the field and in the original caption.] Until today, he hadn’t a clue that he was famous. His reaction when he found out?

He laughed. And couldn’t stop laughing. He was both amused by this and embarrassed. “Really, I was just one of a group of guys. I wasn’t standing out more than anyone else,” he said in a telephone conversation during some rare down time.

It's just this type of attitude that makes the US the world's policeman. That sort of "aw, shucks" by a PFC for chrissakes, not some officer or senior non-com. Shows the world what our troops are made of. No glory hound, not apologetic for anything, no bloodlust for Saddam, just a young kid in harm's way doing a little something extra above and beyond.

There are too many heroes to count. God bless them as they're fighting for the freedom that we so often take for granted. They're the ones that allow the protestors and demonstrators to march, demonstrate, and vandalize.

hero

n 1: a man distinguished by exceptional courage and nobility and strength.

Sounds about right to me.
