Perle Resigns

Washington, March 27 (Bloomberg) -- Richard N. Perle, chairman of the Defense Policy Board, an adviser to the Pentagon, has resigned, NBC News reported on its cable channel MSNBC.
No reason was disclosed, NBC said.
A call to Perle's home wasn't immediately returned.

Here's the AP report.

EXTREMELY sad news.

I'm glad. Perle and others wanted us to put 60K troops in. Idiots.

have to agree w/ shawn. Rummy and his whizkids low-balled it from the beginning. now we gotta wait until more troops arrive in theater before beginning assualt on the 'Dad. standard force ratio is usually 5 to 1 up to 10 to 1 when attacking, and Rummy and company know this, regardless of technological advantages. Their ignorance has put the lives of our troopers at risk.

Reason: Conflict of interest...

Conflict alright. Just that's its realyl between Sharon and Bush.

Brian,
What do you mean?

Posted by: af at March 27, 2003 07:06 PM

I guess Perle got his hand caught in the cookie jar and jumped ship before it hurt the war effort.

I think it's especially important that senior administration officials with really cool nicknames stay on board during this time of conflict. wasn;t Perle after all referred to as the "Prince of Darkness" in Reagan's administration

Af: I think Brian might be referring to the upcoming intramural battle between the hardcore Likudniks and the ones who simply want Israel to continue to exist, peacefully. Bush, although solidly pro-removal-of-Saddam, is a bit less Likudnik than Perle, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz (who was booed at the Israel rally in DC because he wanted a Palestinian homeland.)

"standard force ratio is usually 5 to 1 up to 10 to 1 when attacking, and Rummy and company know this, regardless of technological advantages"

We have a sufficient force ratio to deal with the RGs, when taking into account force quality, technological advantage, and most importantly air power. When the 3rd ID attacks one RG division, it'll be something like 8 or maybe even 10:1. We'll defeat one RG division, then roll onto the next one. Sequential destruction; they don't have a chance.

We do need the extra troops to secure the rear areas and to help protect supply lines, but we don't need to postpone the destruction of the RG for that (I believe).

Actually, I tracked this from Yahoo's site with AP, same article by Burns - directly underneath was a link to an article by Seymour M. Hersh appearing in The New Yorker (www.newyorker.com/?fact/030317fa_fact) entitled "Lunch with the Chairman; why was Richard Perle meeting with Adnan Khaashoggi?" (while it bombards you with purported facts - rarely is it directly sourced - frequent slander/hearsay and innuendo parading as fact - rather shabby IMO.

I'm pissed - I like Richard Perle - it does seem that he'll still be on the Board, just not Chairman. So, what do we make of this? While conflicts can exist - this is at a bare minimum the 4th high visibility political/businessman to have to resign to avoid the appearance of ethical dilemma - remember Dr. Kissinger, et al. to head that commission to investigate the recent NASA disaster? Seemingly all our brillant, successful people cannot be trusted ever, under any circumstance to tread a clear path. Anybody remember that in WWII, all the best were called to Washington to serve and were paid $1.00 annual salaries - it was called patriotism and you responded when your country needed you. Damn - we've become so nuanced.

Um, no. The 4th Infantry was part of the original plan and was not in-theater from the start because of Turkey balking at their planned role.
