US 4th Infantry Division Headed To Gulf
Via Reuters: The United States is flying its high-tech 4th Infantry Division and other units totaling more than 30,000 troops to the Gulf to join the invasion of Iraq, the military said on Wednesday. Posted By Alan at March 26, 2003 12:42 PM | TrackBackComments
What makes the 4th ID "high-tech" or more so than the other fighting units? Posted by: Bob Arnold at March 26, 2003 01:17 PMI second Bob's question. Also, when can we reasonably expect for them to get in there? Posted by: ElCapitanAmerica at March 26, 2003 01:34 PMThe 4th ID has the best, most recent, and most high-tech equipment of any infantry division in the U.S. Army. GlobalSecurity.org refers to it as "the Digitized Division". It is our most lethal mechanized infantry division. It's got M1A2 tanks (not just M1A1), MLRS systems, and other new stuff, some of which may yet remain classified. Generally, you'd like to have the latest gear in the theatre, and it was supposed to be coming in from the north. Instead it was defeated in political battle by the Turks and is now being airlifted to... somewhere. H2? H3? H1? Here's a link to the 4th ID: GlobalSecurity's site AFAIK, 2-3 weeks. Posted by: P.T.Burnem at March 26, 2003 01:49 PMI say it again and again... this war should NEVER have started until TWO HEAVY DIVISIONS were ready to fight... and the best of them was the 4ID and they were the ones forced to be left behind. This stinks. Posted by: David at March 26, 2003 04:15 PMI think there must be some temptation to airlift the troops in to provide additional rear security for the logistics line, considering all the paramilitary action to date. However, I think the professionals are wisely resisting that, since it'd be using the 4th mainly as ground infantry instead of a mechanized/armored force, and they'd still have to redeploy south when the tanks and vehicles get to Kuwait. I'm assuming the reports mean that they're being airlifted so that they can set up in one of the Kuwait camps so they're ready when the equipment finally gets there?
