U.S. Pounds Saddam's Troops

U.S. warplanes have again pounded Republican Guard positions near Baghdad after American ground forces reported killing up to 300 Iraqi troops in a one-sided firefight south of the capital.

More than 30 large explosions struck the southern outskirts of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, where elite troops loyal to President Saddam Hussein are based, as dawn broke. Another hit the city centre.
