Basra is now a targeted city
CNN is reporting that Basra is now considered a target city. Coalition forces are planning on going into Basra with the potential of house to house combat. This is a change from the previous plan to bypass Basra and not go into the city to take it by force at this time. A British officer is stating that the few irregular forces in Basra either have to come out - or we will go in and get them. Comments
I'm no tactician but why don't they set up the food distribution centers outside the City and make the people come out to them to get the food. That way they can surrender their arms and get food at the same time. A house to house search is going to be a disaster. I'd lay seige to the city and have the food outside in distribution centers. Another thing, the way this is now shaking out, I don't know if Tommy Franks has enough troops even with the British. They may also have to do the house-to-house thing in Baghdad. Hmmmmm. I just hope that Iraq doesn't turn into northern ireland, with brave casually dressed freedom fighters taking all the aid they can then shooting at the uniformed soldiers when they are hidden back among the civilian populace.
