Is Bush A Shoo-In For 2004?

That's the question posed in this commentary from Douglas Harbrecht at MSNBC. A taste:

A year truly is a lifetime in politics. As this year plays out, especially if the Democrats can cull a credible challenger, by the campaign’s official opening on Labor Day 2004 the issue of Bush being reelected could be a lot closer than people realize today. The key question is whether he’ll still have Joe and Jane Voter thinking, “He’s trying to do a good job. Leave him alone.”

Comments

Three key factors
(1) Economy has to improve, Joe & Jane have to get a job. The big tax cut has to help or people will lose faith, most of us aren't in the level of income that got the tax break, but we do still vote.

(2) Iraq has to be stable. Can't read about a American death every day.

(3) Democrats have to find a platform to run on. It can't be just pointing a finger, their has to be some solutions for the problems.

sorry sophia, I dont agree. As an ex democrat I can safely say that until the democrats quit their whining and complaining and come up with other viable candidates, the republicans will prevail.

Us middle liners realize that the Iraq sitaution is difficult and that stabilty will take a long time. And the more that the democrats politisize this in effort to make themselves look good, the more turned off we are.

We took many shots, the economy will improve slowly but surely. The president has very little to do with this. Interest rates are low, things are ok.The stockmarket is begining to stabilize.

Democrats need to get rid of Mc Cauilf, Bill , Hillary,Carville etc., they are clowns, they are transparent. IT just does not work anymore. Again, take it from an ex democrat. we have serious problems in his world, problems that demand the attention of serious and determined individuals, not idiots having oral sex in the oval office. It is more than having to find a platform to run on, the democrats have to find some real grown ups to run.

Mark my words, Bush wins by 12-15 percentage points

Bush will win for two reasons:

1) About 60% of the voting public is stupid and base their vote on a commercial. (Bush has tons of money for that) Sad but true. The PR team for Bush is very powerful. First president to use backdrops and props for speeches. Herds the sheep.

2) Conservatives will go out and vote because they want to keep what they have. (An unemployed worker is gonna drink a 40 with his unemployment check rather than vote)

It is all about 2008 when Hillary runs against Rice or Jeb.

John

Does that come in a pill, a capsule or do you smoke it?

There's only one democrat running who stands a chance, and he's losing ground in the preliminary polls. The democrats can't win with a dove or an isolationist, they need a hawk. The democrats don't have many hawks. Multilateralism is all well and good, but right now people look on it as an excuse for pacifism. The hard core republicans will vote for Bush, and the hard core democrats will vote for whomever, but the swing voters seem to be typified by Atomicdog: Ex-Demcrats that while still perhaps social liberals feel that foreign policy is a more important issue at this time, and into the foreseeable future.

dont put words in my mouth anon. Listen very carefully, again. It has nothing to do with any one thing or another, foreign policy vs economy etc.Character is important.

John you are just an idiot. Maybe that unemployed worker of yours should be spending more time making a concerted effort to find a job rather that getting drunk. I know John, us republicans dont care about the common person and that was a terrible thing to say.

And John, should it ever come down to Hillary vs Rice, with Rice you are looking at a woman with character and intelligence. Hillary is a circus side show. Big difference

Bush will lose for two reasons:
1. The Economy
2. The Economy
- Unemployment right now is around 6.4%--which doesn't include people who can no longer get unemployment, or who are underemployed and trying to support their families on minimum wage jobs.
-Corporate scandals have Bush's name all over them (for those in denial just take a look at Harken, Enron, Halliburton, etc--or you can just ask Kenny Boy)
-Personal bankruptcies are at very high levels
-Home foreclosures are also at very high levels
-33 state budgets are in deficit
-And finally, the federal budget is now $400,000,000,000 in the red thanks to the Bush administration (or should I say mis-administration)

Hopefully, President Howard Dean will be able to undo the all the damage Bush has done to the economy and the country.

patrick get your facts straight. The economy has very little to do with Bush and we critical swing voters know that. These scandals u speak came about because Billy Boy loosened up auditing methods. Under Billy Boy, the inhouse accountants we allowed to do the auditing... bad mistake. Personal bankruptcies are within the expected range and for your information, home forclosures are lower.

Interest rates are lower and the stock market is beginning to stabilize. Blame the stupid govenors, especially that democrat, whats his name, of Callifornia. Oh yes, Gray is his name. LOL.

I blame the president, republicans and democrats equally for the budget deficit, I am a realist Patrick .

You are like my mommy that got fooled so much by the democrats, you believe only what you want to hear.
And let us not forget about the moral damge your man billy did while he was in office. What a psycho. Patrick, get real the guy was focused on getting Bjs in the oval office, the rest of the world laughed at us.

Lets see, Billy decimated the military, ignored terrorism, even during great economic times failed to overhaul medicare and develop a plan for better health insurance, failed to bring peace to the middle east, etc. Billy Boy certainly had you fooled Patrick.. me too I voted for him the first time and then I grew up> THe bill and Hillary show, what a waste, two immature sociopaths. Soap Opera stuff, Jerry Springer fodder.

President Howrd Dean.. dont think so. Bush wins the general election by at least ten percentage points. And in 2008, Condy Rice kicks butt too

So Patrick get your facts straight and suffer for another eight years

Atomicdog...Just because the truth scares you, doesnt mean something is not true. Go to a local library and read some books on evolution, industrial psychology, marketing, and sociology. You may find that indeed we are animals that have come a long way. You may find that indeed marketing a campain the right way is all that matters in the time of television. You may find that only a select few get a college education to think for themselves. You may find that certain things such as colors (Why are McDonalds, Wendys, In N Out, Carls. Jr colors red and yellow)(Why are cop uniforms blue) do trigger emotions and responses. You may find that you shouldnt label people to cover your own insecurities.

JOHN? John DOE? WTF? I thought AtomicDog, despite the poisoning he suffers from the KryptoniteCollar he wears, has a purty good handle on 'TheWayThingsBeen'. Sub the word 'Are', and then "WillBe' where 'Been' is in my last phrase there, and that purty much covers all the requisite issues.
