Civil rights activist and Democratic presidential hopeful Rev. Al Sharpton denounced President Bush for invading Iraq without international support and mocked him for failing to find Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, Saddam Hussein or Osama bin Laden.Related is this story from the Washington Times: Sharpton Calls Bush L.A. Gang Leader."They said they're going to war because of weapons of mass destruction. They can't find the weapons," Sharpton said during a campaign stop at the First African Methodist Episcopal Church. "Bush said after Sept. 11 we've got to go and get bin Laden. Yet he can't find bin Laden. He can't find bin Laden, he can't find the weapons. Now we've got to take pride that Saddam Hussein is still alive; we can't find him.
"I promise you if I'm elected, President Bush will not be in charge of the missing persons bureau," Sharpton shouted to cheers, laughter and applause.
I was in New York when Sharpton led a highly disruptive protest march over the Amadou Dialo shooting, streaming downtown on Broadway.
Bearing signs that said "Adolf Giuliani", these people turned up everywhere, even filled up the lobby of Merrill Lynch as if the brokerage firm held some responsibility.
He and former Mayor Dinkins were arrested for trespassing at City Hall and spent I think only a few hours, maybe a night in jail.
I later(jokingly) asked an NYPD friend, "You had Sharpton in a cell again, why didn't you guys KEEP him?"
The reply: "WE don't want that pain in the ass!"
