Bush | Sources: Powell Resigns - Three Other Cabinet Members to Resign [Updated -4-]

Breaking on Fox:

Secretary of State Colin Powell announced his resignation to his staff during their Monday morning meeting, a State Department source told FOX News.

President Bush is expected to make the official announcement. The source suggested that Powell is likely to stay in place until a replacement is confirmed.

More details as we get them.

Update:

Powell reportedly handed in his resignation Friday. But the president has not yet accepted his resignation.
CNN reported that there is a lot of speculation that Condoleezza Rice will be offered Powell’s position.

More:

The White House was preparing an announcement to confirm Powell’s resignation. According to one official, Powell expects that his departure date will be sometime in January. It was not immediately clear whether he will leave before Bush’s second inauguration on Jan 20.

Most of the speculation on a successor has centered on U.N. Ambassador John Danforth, a Republican and former U.S. senator from Missouri.

Update:

Various other news services reported that Agriculture Secretary Anne Veneman, Education Secretary Spencer Abraham and Education Secretary Rod Paige had also told President Bush of their intentions to leave the administration.

Update:

This makes it look pretty definite that all those mentioned will be resigning.

well I’m disappointed

I saw this coming, and I’m not all pleased.
I think Condi would be a disaterous choice to replace him, too. Not that I don’t like Condi, I just think that the Arabs won’t negotiate in good faith with a woman. Henry Kissinger? Why not?

Oh well. Cue the smear campaign should Powell air the dirty laundry.

“Henry Kissinger?”

Good lord. Do you read history books at all?

..Colin Powell is a great man, may his future endeavors be rewarding..he served his country with honor and loyalty…in today’s world those two virtues are in short supply..

I’m not surprised with Powell’s resignation either. Of course, it hasn’t been accepted yet, but I’d guess that’s a matter of form.

Hmm, I dunno about Kissinger. He’s 81yrs old. I don’t expect him to want the job again and he’s too controversial. I don’t see Condi Rice either. I think she’d get Defense if Rummy ever bows out.

How about John Negroponte? Of course, he’s supposed to be getting Iraq back on its feet. He was pulled out of the UN for that job but I’d suggest him as a possibility since we’re guessing here.

Powell has written books before but I don’t see him doing a Richard Clarke. If he writes about his term before Bush is out of office it won’t be a backstabbing. After 2008 all bets are off though. I think he’ll wait till then and maybe let it all hang out when he does.

Maybe the Arabs need a lesson that they have to come into the modern world, not us retreat into the past.

A kiss and tell book? I doubt it; Powell is old school. Gentlemen don’t write k&t books generally.

I’m sure Ken Mehlman is trying to get him on the phone right now…

I think Powell resigning was almost inevitable. He spent too much of his political capitol on having us take that disatrous detour to the UN in the run up to the Iraq war when it was fairly obvious we weren’t going to get support. To Powell’s credit, I think he did it strictly on principle; however the move discredited him too much as a diplomat above the military level.

I think if it had been any body but Powell and Bush in Office, Powell would have had to resign over a year ago.

I don’t know who is likely to replace him.

Radical clerics Dobson or Robertson.

Colon Bowel is a sell out. He was angry that sons of privilege got out of Vietnam. Then he joined up with one. Lied through his teeth at the UN...and he knew it. Threw away his great reputation for a band of lying thugs.

Best choice—John McCain…also a sellout, will fit right in. Got the black baby (at least according to GWB 2000 campaign in SC) so that should help with appearances. Surely his Bush-KA act should count for something. Straight Talk John. Word.

Actually dubyus,

I hope Bush picks you. Then you can show the world how intelligent, thoughtful and constructive the American left is with all of your “Colon Bowel” references. I’m sure you’ll make the nation proud and Americans will be able to hold our heads high once again.

and so Dubyus illustrates one of the left’s biggest problems. Basically what Dubyus says is this: since Colin Powel had the unmitigated temerity to serve in a republican administration he must be branded as an Oreo.

In the very sane and sensible world of the left Powell is guilty of being a black conservative. Better in the Dubyus world that Powell think and act like Al Sharpton, I suppose, then to seize an opportunity to serve his country and distinguish himself.

Let me ask the left this: are the only legitimate ways for Black men to better themselves sports stardom or Church ministry?

Can’t think for yourself…or read for that matter. You automatically assume that I have the problem with Colon Bowel that you do. You made it up…it’s in your head…not mine. My post said nothing about color or race regarding Bowel.

My position is clear…I don’t care what color Colon or McCain are. They are sellouts. They say one thing and do another when the winds shift. Perfect for this admin.

Moot point though…incoming SoS rumored to be Condom Lies Ah. Now there’s a choice to make you proud. Have your racist way with that one. Wonder if she has a blue dress that her husband, er boss likes.

jackson you don’t want me anywhere near your Prodigal Son; returning Messiah. He’s a scumbag. I’d be “retired” in seconds. My problem is that my yap runs and I don’t KA.

“My problem is that my yap runs and I don’t KA.”

Better to be a silent fool than to run your yap and prove it.

Just my opinion.

Here’s another big problem for the left: our Secretary of State will be a black woman. Soooooo, do we need more racial preferences and affirmative action and other expensive aproductive government programs to bring “equality” to America?

It’s sure not looking like it. Oh, and lefties, before you get your silks all bunched up about this being a somehow isolated example, my last boss was a black woman.

Take a deep cleansing breath lefties: the war on poverty is over and we won, time to demobilize the army of expensive bureaucrats, muster them out and get on with life.

Okay, how about throwing a wrench in the works? I understand the point that some countries wouldn’t negotiate with a woman, but that was proven wrong with Madeline Albright. So Condi should do just fine. How about using G. Gordon Liddy as Secretary of Defense??? I heard him speak once and I agree with one thing he said. An Arab guy was bitching at him and said he didn’t like Arabs. Liddy said, “I don’t care what nationality you are. If you want me to be your friend, I will be the best friend you ever had. But if you do anything to hurt me or my family, I will KILL YOU.”
I think that is something the terrorists could understand, huh?

Just a thought.

clever insulting niblet there doc

Nice touch to plagiarize Lincoln and change a few words to look intelligent.

Thought that Cap’n was military until I realized that Boy George was also a Captain…of his cheerleading squad.

How ‘bout something of substance? Do you agree or disagree that Colon Bowel is a sellout comparing the anger in his book with his political actions? Do you agree or disagree that the 2000 smearing of McCain in SC makes his Bush suckup look like a sellout? Do you agree or disagree that Dobson or Robertson should have a role in the Bush Second Admin?

It’s easy to insult. It’s more difficult to think, especially challenging to come up with something original. What’s your contribution? Belittling people who don’t agree with your welded opinions adds nothing. Are you up to the challenge? Have you ever had an original thought?

Or are you like the guy who spends all day at the truck stop just parroting, passing along all the stuff he hears from the people who stop in?

BH57 that’s fine. When someone hurts GGL or his family (or presumably his country), would he kill people who have nothing to with the hurting? Would GGL have let OBL run loose and leveled Fallujah?

To look at it from another perspective, if GGL was Iraqi, would he docilely accept the liberators/occupiers or would he be killing the people who hurt his family and innocent children?

Is GGL the kind of guy that whips out his pistola when someone cuts in front of him on the freeway? Does he assume that the other driver intends him harm? Police, judge, jury and executioner. Nice guy. Hope I always remember to use my turn signal.

Posted by: dubyus [TypeKey Profile Page] at November 16, 2004 11:21 AM

I don’t know if GGL would kill everyone…but I believe his first targets would be the Al-Jazzera satellite network, any media idiots in the area, and any mosque that has weapons. In other words, do what you can to obey the Geneva convention rules of warfare, but if in doubt, kill the insurgents first and ask questions later. Get rid of the media and you get rid of the biggest tool of the insurgents.
