California | 2008 : Schwarzenegger Amendment?

From The Australian :

Arnold Schwarzenegger has confirmed he would want to become US president if the constitution were changed to allow foreign-born citizens to run for the White House.

“Yes. Absolutely,” the Austrian-born former action film star told US 60 Minutes last night.

I think, you know, because, why not? Like with my way of thinking, you always shoot for the top.”

However, California’s maverick “Governator”, as he calls himself, knows the odds are against him because of the hurdles that constitutional amendments must pass.

Amendments require a two-thirds majority in both houses of Congress as well as a majority in three-quarters of the state legislatures.

That said, influential Republican senator Orrin Hatch has introduced such an amendment into Congress, sparking conjecture the Republican Party is paving the way for its newest star to run for president as early as 2008.

Mr Schwarzenegger, whose approval rating hovers near a staggering 70 per cent — higher than even his hero Ronald Reagan enjoyed while running California — said the prospect was “not something that I am preoccupied with”.

I am not thinking one single minute about that because there’s so many things I have to do in California, and my promise was to straighten out the mess in California,” he said.

Even as a Republican, I am trepiditious about such an amendment. While I have no doubt about Arnold’s dedication to the US, I worry how you would word such an amendment so that only such obviously dedicated people as Arnold fit the bill. I’m even concerned about something as extreme as 35 years citizen in good standing — basically the equivalent of the 35 year age limit we have currently.

I’m surprised I haven’t seen a lot of blogging on Prop 71. I’ve only heard about it via the Laura Ingraham show.
