Michigan | Local News Coverage in Detroit

At the very moment I write this, Sen. John Kerry and friends are having one last rally in Joe Louis Arena in downtown Detroit. Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, Gov. Jennifer Granholm and Michigan native, Stevie Wonder are all pushing for their fellow Democrats to get out and vote.
Earlier today I heard a NewsTalk 760 WJR report Sen. Kerry’s team had already claimed victory in Michigan and closed many of their offices. Apparently this was premature, hence this late rally.

A new poll taken by local station WDIV has Sen. Kerry leading 50% to President Bush’s 47%.

A video clip of the poll and another from WXYZ detailing some rather disturbing information from Get out of the Vote phone calls are detailed in my blog, Blom Blog.

Saturday’s Bush rally set a record for having the most people under the roof of the new DeVos Place Convention Center at the same time, according to center manager Rich MacKeigan.

As the center’s first political rally, MacKeigan said he was pleased with how it went. About 2,500 people were waiting for him when he arrived to open up the center at 5 a.m. Though the line extended halfway around the Vandenberg Center block at 6 a.m., the lines moved smoothly, he said.

Two-thirds of the sprawling convention center — with enough room for 15,000 people — were set aside for the rally while the other third was set aside as a staging area for the Bush entourage and security officials.
Though the center’s Grand Gallery was designed as a majestic entrance for visitors, it was a no-access zone. Persons arriving for the rally were sent through the center’s service doors instead. The Bush motorcade arrived in the truck loading docks at the center’s north end.
