| Howard Increases Majority in Australia

In a result that will shore up George Bush’s chances (however slightly), the Coalition Liberal-National Party Government of Australian PM John Howard has been returned with an increased majority.

Latest official results are available through the Australian Electoral Commission, and at 9:24:48 PM local time with 62.19% of the votes counted, the Government has a swing of +1.96%.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation prediction shows a likely increase of 2 seats in the Government majority (previously 8 seats).

This will give the Howard Government an unprecedented 4th consecutive term of office.

UPDATE: The official results now show that the Coalition has definitely got the minimum 76 seats needed for a majority, with 63.81% of the votes counted.

UPDATE: The Opposition Leader, Mark Latham, has just conceded defeat.

Remember that a day or two before the elections the polls showed a “dead heat.” And then it turned out to not be close.

Now, it’s doubtful to me that a whole lot of Australian voters changed their minds 24-48 hours before the election. So, it appears that the polls were very wrong, and I have to wonder if they were intentionally engineered to make it look like Latham had a better chance of winning than he really did.
