New York | Agenda For Next Three Years: Bob Bennett (And A Call To Increase National Park Spending)
Just spent some time with Bob Bennett, Senator from Utah. Like the others I’ve spoken with, I asked:
“Presuming a second term for the administration, what should be the administration’s top three priorities?”
His (paraphrased) response:
- Social Security and Medicare reform … the President was starting to make ground here early in his first term, but then was unable to make further progress (war on terrorism and all) … he’d hope to focus more on those issues in a second term.
- Reforming the intelligence communication structure … he’s “intrigued” by Pat Roberts’ proposal, and we have to stop using a Cold War infrastructure for GWOT challenges.
- Trade issues.
I also asked if he thought the Federal Government should increase funding for national parks (Utah has five national parks). The answer: “Yes.” “We’ve added a lot of acres to the National Park system in the past 20 years, and we haven’t had a commensurate increase in funding.”
