| Noonan & Pataki

Something to look for on Thursday night: A talking head on Charlie Rose just said that Peggy Noonan is writing Pataki’s speech.

The 2008 lineup gets bigger and bigger …

Peggy Noonan is one of my all-time heroes. It was reading her memoir, What I Saw at the Revolution, that first turned me on to the thought that maybe, just maybe, conservatism might not be as bad as I, in my infinite, 22-year-old wisdom, thought it was.

My only reservation is that her prose sometimes outruns her speaker. Quoting “High Flight” or “these are the boys of Pointe du Hoc” worked for Reagan; he could carry it. Her “thousand points of light” was a brilliant and beautiful metaphor, but 41 wasn’t quite, quite up to the task. He almost had it, you could see that he understood it in his heart, but he couldn’t quite sell it.

Will Governor Pataki be up to it? I have no idea. But in the end, I don’t really care. They say Lincoln’s delivery of the Gettysburg Address was high-pitched and difficult to hear. But we still memorize the words in school. It’s the words that matter, not the delivery, despite what three generations of TV politics would lead us to believe.

Pataki is no bueno. He has little or no hope of winning a national election. I hope.
I voted for him in his first campaign, when I lived in NY. But he’s a complete NY pol. Which is to say, as corrupt as a Boston pol but not as smart. Boston is corrupt but very well run, NY is as corrupt but not very well run. Three men run NY state, Silver, Bruno and Pataki. One is a Dem the others are GOP but other than that there’s no difference.
He’s better than Mario Cuomo, but that’s about it.
Pataki gives RINOs a bad name.

One more thing, does anybody remember in the days after 9/11 when Rudy was all over the place? Pataki was always two steps away, he didn’t do anything, he just tried to glom onto Rudy’s leadership. He was in every shot. He reminded me of that dog in the cartoon, “What are we gonna to do today George?”
