| Democrats' Theme: Mission Not Accomplished
WASHINGTON [AP]- Democrats say they will have a rapid and simple response to the Republican National Convention that starts next week: Mission not accomplished.

It’s a play on President Bush’s flight in May 2003 to the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, where he addressed U.S. troops standing beneath a banner that said “Mission Accomplished” and declared an end to major combat in Iraq. The banner has been criticized as the fighting in Iraq continues and the U.S. death toll approaches 1,000.

Matt Bennett, a spokesman for the Democratic “rapid response” effort, said Bush has forgotten about the middle class and has pursued a narrow agenda benefiting powerful special interests.

“We’re sending the message that George Bush simply hasn’t accomplished the mission,” he said.

Well - I think we’re middle class and as far as I’m concerned Bush hasn’t forgotten us. I wish the DNC would push school vouchers or tax reform - but as long as they’re going on about how Bush has failed I’ll let them know the tax refunds we’ve gotten have been very helpful and I’m not going to vote for a politician who’s looking to roll them back at the first opportunity, no matter how good the rhetoric is.

Rhetoric isn’t reality. The sooner that the Democrats realize this, the better off the party’s going to be. As it is - their insistence that words are the same as actions, that rhetoric equals real-world results just doesn’t cut it.

I guess the irony is lost on the democrats. Their own feverish opposition to anything and everything Bush contributes to the continued fighting in Iraq, giving democrats more incentive to oppose Bush.

Now that is a vicious cycle.

JLL3:

“I think we’re middle class and as far as I’m concerned Bush hasn’t forgotten us… Rhetoric isn’t reality.”

You are on the mark. I’m “middle class” too and Bush’s/Congress’ tax cut helped me buy a house. The more the rhetoric mis-matches reality, the more the speaker loses credibility.

I don’t have HBO. Did the Democrats get “Mission Not Accomplished” from another of their miniseries?

What stunt will this bunch of geniuses use to promote this piece of focus-group driven crap? It wouldn’t surprise me if they had a Bush impersonator in a flight suit push Cleland down the stairs in front of the NYSE.

What the RNC needs to do is find a clever way to associate the poor behavior of the protestors with the Democrat party.

This might help America see just exactly who selected Kerry in the primaries.

The first protestors are the naked ones protesting lack of attention to aids prevention. Seems to me putting their clothes on would help in that matter. If the other protestors and anarchists get rowdy, it will surely hurt the dems and liberals. And if there is some kind of terror act in the middle of it, Kerry will have to go into hiding.

If I recall correctly, the “mission accomplished” banner was intended by the carrier’s CO to report that the ship’s mission had been accomplished… not the war in Iraq. This is the equivalent of a sub coming back from patrol with a broom attached to the mast. Did the Dems’ bother to footnote that?

The former Central Command commanding general says as much in his book and that it was he and not President Bush who approved the banner going up.

I’m sure all the carriers’ crew and air squadron members really love this tactic by the DNC and can’t wait to thank the Dems at the polls accordingly.

Sorry guys but more bad news for the Bushies:

Poverty up in most recent study [LINK]

WASHINGTON - The number of Americans living in poverty increased by 1.3 million last year, while the ranks of the uninsured swelled by 1.4 million, the Census Bureau reported Thursday.

It was the third straight annual increase for both categories. While not unexpected, it was a double dose of bad economic news during a tight re-election campaign for President Bush

Cappy,

Tight campaign?

Why is Ltjg Kerry so jumpy? Why not just ignore a story that is going no where told by a bunch of liars and misfits?

USS Kerry seems to have a few holes below the waterline and at least one bent screw. The firing is steady and hits are being scored every day.

but let me tell you the real reason Kerry is taking on water and listing to port.

The short version:

There is a big difference between William Calley and John Kerry. William Calley is a proven war criminal. For John Kerry we only have his word as an officer and a gentleman.

Regarding the poverty statistic, it is just that, a statistic, and a poorly labeled one at that. The facts are that

1. The poverty number only measures paychecks of a certain size received versus total population. It does not include investment income or wealth. So, a mult-millionaire doctor decides to hang it up for a year and pursue her passion for growing orchids would join those measured as living in poverty for that year.
2. The number was originally chosen by the government during the Johnson administration and has been steadily ratcheted up ever since — poverty is a great excuse for breaking out the Federal checkbook.
3. The average person living “in poverty” in the US enjoys a better standard of living than the average European.

yes, it’s hard to really get riled up about “poverty” when the trial lawyers are lining up to sue fast food restaurants because poor people are fat.

Simply amazing. Hey, lefties: the war on poverty is over, we won.

Now go home and leave the adults to their conversations.
