| McGreevey: "I am a gay American"

Philadelphia Inquirer: McGreevey, saying secret extramarital affair with man would make continuing as N.J. governor untenable, resigns.

“My truth is that I am a gay American,” McGreevey, 47, said in a slow, measured voice, as his with Dina stood at his side in the outer room of the governor’s office in Trenton.

He admitted to engaging “shamefully in an adult consensual affair with another man” and apologized for the harm that did to his marriage and to his family.

While saying he believed that a gay person could be a governor, he added that he felt his extra-martial affair put him and his office in a vulnerable situation.

By resigning in November, McGreevey negates the need for a special election to fill the remainder of his term which expires in January 2006. The resignation would take place approximately two weeks after the presidential election.

It’s none of our business, but if he is gay, why is he married? It doesn’t sound like he’s finished sorted everything out.

I feel bad for this guy.

Read up on him, then tell us how bad you feel for him. Typical liberal. Lie, cheat, do whatever to get your way. Fu-k your friends, family, or whoever necessary. You can’t control even ONE aspect of your miserable life, but you think you are qualified to run a whole state, or country.

I have NO sympathy for this typical liberal [edited for violation of TCP comment policies]

A Governor elected for an unexpired term shall assume his office immediately upon his election.

Richard J. Codey, I believe. Pardon the double post.

From what I’ve read on other blogs, his excuse for resigning is crap. He is portraying it as a personal matter. Apparently, he hired his secret homosexual lover to head New Jersey’s anti-terrorism task force, which would make it very much NOT a personal matter.

He isn’t the first, nor will he be the last (straigth or gay) to make the mistake of having an extramarital affair and putting his lover on some payroll. I’m sure there is many a conservative who has done the same kind of thing. I’m not saying he should be excused for his behavior, but that it isn’t a excluisively a liberal/conservative or gay/straight thing.

Have a source for that Tim? A good one?

Its mentioned on other newsies as well and on the less “upscale” ones its his lover is listed as a unqualified hiree security adviser for the new jersey area for liason to the office of homeland security. A position that the person was very unqualified for, and apparently the two had an affair before the hiree was discovered to be unqualified and fired. The ex-gov is apprently being sued by his ex lover now. If all this is true….

Then McGreevey should be hanged, not for being gay or even lying about it. He should be made an example of for knowingly putting the people who elected him in danger all so he could get a quick and easy lay. Turning your back on terrorism for a piece of tail should be a executable offense.

As it stands now, I see McGreevey as scum for trying to use the gay-rights argument as a cover for his corruption. Considering the amount of struggle a lot of honest folks have had to go through over the years to get tolerance to the point it is today, not to mention the struggles gay politicians have gone through just to get elected, McGreevey’s statements make a mockery of what they went through. Indeed, it ties “gay” and “corrupt” together in this case when it was totally unnecessary to do so, except to give McGreevey an excuse to resign which didn’t involve admitting having betrayed the public trust. He’s undoubtably hoping to portray this as a witchhunt, which if successful might enable him to salvage some kind of political future.

He’s not just gay. He’s “a gay American”. Slick. The guy has already got the title for his best-selling memoir.

An “Israeli poet”? Homeland security? Free association: first thought - Mossad.
