AP: Bush Waiting to Lay Out 2nd-Term Agenda

President Bush’s supporters shout “Four more years!” but for now, it’s unclear what a second term would bring.

The president has been offering broad-brush descriptions of what he’d do if he were re-elected — “win the war on terror,” “extend peace and freedom throughout the world” and “continue to create jobs.”

Yet, with just over 100 days until the election, Bush is keeping the details of his plans private.

Bush’s advisers say that the run-up to next week’s Democratic National Convention in Boston is hardly a good time to outline second-term goals. At a speech Wednesday night at the Washington convention center, Bush is expected to take a stab at it.

“I think the president will begin to touch more on some of the broad themes of his vision for the next four years,” White House press secretary Scott McClellan said Wednesday. “It would be fair to say, I think, that as we move beyond the Democratic convention and into our convention that we will be talking more about the president’s agenda going forward.”

What we need: (not necessarily what will be addressed)

  • Solid steps toward SS privatization, providing a chance for the bottom quintiles to pass on to their children the fruits of their labors
  • Military reform - rightsizing the military to fight something other than the Russians coming through the Fulda Gap, with an eye toward future engagements
  • True homeland security - container inspection, a crack-down on the fake identity industry, ballistic missile defense and wiring the common boarders with Canada and Mexico like they did the Ho Chi Minh Trail
  • Economic reform - an end to subsidies to large corporations, farms and private businesses that need to succeed or fail on their own merits. Make permanent the tax cuts of the first administration and look to further reductions paired with reduced spending.
  • Abandoning all elements of government which exceed the rights granted to it by the people through the Constitution.

I know, it’s pretty radical, eh? The government actually paying attention to its own Constitution. I’m sure there are a lot of people who will disagree with me, but you know what? I don’t care.

If a government can’t obey its own rules, what right does it have to expect that behavior from its own citizens? The fish rots from the head down.

Won’t be the subjec t of any TV spots, but I’m sure that the Axis of Evil will be getting some attention in term 2 if he wins. And we won’t have to let Martha Stewart out of jail to know that “it’s a good thing.”
