| DNCC Blogger Credentials--And It Seems We're Not On The List

Jeff Jarvis reports that the DNCC appears to have notified those bloggers accredited for the convention … and unless the invite is late in coming, it seems Command Post isn’t on the list.

I’ll reiterate here what I posted in the comments at Buzzmachine: I’ll be disappointed if we’re not accredited (and I’m presuming we won’t be), as we’re likely the only non-opinion / news-wire oriented site to apply (and given our pedigree of extensive credibility and contact with the mainstream press).

Hell, due to other commitments Michele and I both turned down the same CNBC appearance on blogs at the convention that Kos and Eric Schnure (who runs the DNCC blog) ultimately accepted. So it’s not like we’re not equally legitimate in the eyes of the press.

We’re probably the only ones who wouldn’t spin the story … left or right. If we’re not credentialed, maybe that’s the reason?

So far, no list from the DNCC re: who did and did not receive credentials, and no post about the process on the DNCC’s own blog. Personally, I’d very much like to see one.

Here’s who’s been credentialed so far (and I’ll keep updating the list):

Bill over at INDC Journal was invited and then dis-invited. He’s got a post up this morning describing his adventure thus far, and promises further reports as events warrant.

The whole thing seems kind of arbitrary to me. I understand the need to restrict access, both for security reasons and to avoid widespread chaos, but the idea of deciding who can and can’t cover the national convention of a political party seems wrong to me somehow.

I don’t know how I feel at the moment.

I think it’s a poor policy if most of the invitees reflect a consistent political viewpoint. Should that be the case, then if anything, this serves to deligitimize blogs … to me it would mean the DNCC didn’t take blogs seriously as press, and instead saw them as an opportunity to amplify positive spin.

That’s OK — the Daily Show’s John Stewart has a floor pass.

Wouldn’t it be a kick, if one of those “reliable” blogs turned out to have a mind and perspective of their own?

Criticism of the Democrats from the Right wouldn’t impress anyone. But if, just maybe, a left-leaning blog takes KerryCo to task, that could shake a tree or two…

In any case, if this is what the Dems are doing, it becomes a no-lose for the GOP. If the Republicans only give out credentials to right-wing sites, that is no worse than the Democrats. But if the Republicans are fair and balanced, then this plays out to Bush’s advantage.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out.

How d’ya feel about a roadie to NYC?

Command Post is a partisan site. Several of the contributors are Bloggers for Bush. I don’t blame the DNC one bit. It’s rather like Bush not visiting the NAACP - why bother?

Haven’t we been through this recently?

Any word on the RNC passes yet? I had thought about applying to attend one or two days, but haven’t heard anything specific in the last few days. Is anyone who was disallowed from the DNC thinking about heading to NYC for the RNC?

What are the advantages to credentialed reporting? If the convention is totally scripted and the candidates are insulated from the main stream media, other than recognition, what are bloggers gaining over merely going to Boston on their own?

It seems to me that the newsworthy events will be outside the convention hall — local businesses and residents irate over security-imposed travel restrictions; Boston police union threatening pickets outside the convention; Mary Jo Kopechne’s 60th birthday.
