| TCP Poll: It's Awfully Close

The results of our in-house TCP 2004 Election Poll, which used the same question format as Gallup:

Much closer than I expected, given that our readership leans right (of course, I’d like for our readership to run the spectrum, so maybe this is good news on that point). And folks could only vote once, so no complaints that people were spamming the results. We’ll run it again in a few weeks, and thanks to everyone who voted.

When you run it again I’ll participate. My vote will go to Bush!

You can’t really take that poll too seriously.

We’ve been heavily infiltrated by DemocraticUnderground.Com, and one of their favorite activities is skewing polls to make their guy look good.

Just last week I read a thread at DU that specifically targeted a FOX poll, and they were positively gleeful about it.

I appreciate the effort in setting up the poll, and the results might be valid as to TCP readers, but I think it’s always helpful and important for credibility purposes to note that such polls are by their nature unscientific, given that they represent the opinions of a self-selected sample. Eugene Volokh (a former teacher of mine at UCLA Law and lead blogger at the Volokh Conspiracy) has had much to say about these kinds of polls at his site, for those who are interested.

Thanks for all the other good info, though (oh, and I’d vote for Bush, too).

Says the man with the right-wing board…

Eric, I’ll take that poll seriously when Nader is a 4-6% and Kerry is leading.

Lakhim, that’s the depths of laziness. If what you want is a poll result that flatters your prejudices, make up your own. It’s still a free country and we’ve got a long summer ahead of us. Go for it - you can even have your man win as many times as you want….

We also ask that you avoid the extensive use of profanity, racist terms (neither of which we consider civil or respectful), and other boorish language.

We also will frown upon those who suggest that we ban other individuals for voicing unpopular opinions, should those opinions be voiced in a civil and respectful manner.
