Kerry | Kerry considers postponing acceptance of nomination

CNN: Kerry considers postponing acceptance of nomination

Sen. John Kerry may postpone accepting his party’s presidential nomination at the July Democratic convention — a tactic aimed at reserving his campaign war chest for the fight against President Bush.

Under federal campaign rules, once a candidate accepts the party nomination, the campaign is limited to spending around $75 million.

The Republican convention is five weeks later than the Democratic convention, meaning Kerry’s $75 million would start being drained more than a month earlier than Bush’s.

By postponing the acceptance of the nomination, Kerry could continue to spend the private money he’s raised during the primary season, and those funds would not be counted against the $75 million limit.

Rove must be soiling himself. Someone else is playing fast and loose with the rules. That’s not fair. That’s not the American Way. This is the kind of thing that makes the Iraqis hate the troops. Treasonous.

Posted by: PushTheButton at May 22, 2004 12:43 PM

Several Democrats have talked about nominiating someone else and “Anyone But Kerry”.

Is the stuff about “money” just another Kerry cover-up? It seems to be.

Posted by: leaddog2 at May 22, 2004 01:49 PM

Either that, or perhaps Rove has messed himself in a much more excitatory fashion. This is already starting to play badly in Boston and may soon jump the Dems to the top of the list of who can throw a bigger fiasco this summer.

Posted by: chthus at May 22, 2004 01:50 PM

This paragraph from an article in the Boston Globe about Kerry is funny.

Kerry coughs and whines all of the time, so this should be a real easy one for him. Ha!

“Some leading Democrats who like the delay strategy said they were counting on the public not caring about such money-driven, procedural moves. ”Maybe Kerry can say something like, ‘I accept your nomination on contingency,’ and cough when he says the last two words,” said Carter Eskew, a senior adviser to Democratic nominee Al Gore in 2000”.

Posted by: leaddog2 at May 22, 2004 03:20 PM

Why would anyone, even Carl Rove, feel bad that Kerry is trying to exploit every loophole his legal team can find? It’s only to be expected. Kerry has already shown, by his “pre-challenges” and his retaining a huge pile of lawyers that he is going to play as dirty as possible.
Since I think Kerry’s policies are worthless, it amuses me that he has to sink to ever greater depths to keep up the appearance that he can win, but he was chosen for his “electability”.

Posted by: Brian at May 22, 2004 04:14 PM

These supposed guardians of American Democracy are laughable.

I won’t say the whole left is that way…
Just the core.

Posted by: eric at May 22, 2004 05:31 PM

I think the dems should go ahead and have a convention without a nominee. Then the government can take back the $14 million they gave them to throw the fiasco in Boston anyway. Bet that would piss Kerry and all the dumbfucks up good…. ha ha Nobody watches the conventions anyway, but I think that Al Sharpton now believes he has a chance. Go Al…..America LOVES YA….yeah right!! he he Dems put forward not only a radical black, but a jackass criminal too!! Sounds normal for liberals….I don’t think this is Kerry’s only skirting of law, more is coming.

Posted by: dickD at May 22, 2004 07:12 PM

Does Kerry have the numbers/delegates really locked up?

When would he be nominated?

He needs to raise more money (haven’t the spigots opened up yet?) at the expense of the nomination party (and the free TV coverage that comes with it)?

Yeah, this is a bearish view, but with all the conspiracy theories running around the Dem convention (Hillary namely), this only adds to the speculation.

Posted by: dean at May 22, 2004 07:40 PM

Is this to leave open the “Torrcelli” scenario if his numbers slip?
Or Kerry’s disregard for standards, and the rules don’t apply to him?
Whatever, I think he’s a POS.

Posted by: coastygirl at May 22, 2004 08:44 PM

Why is it always Democrats that are in favor of propounding campaign finance rules that limit free speech, yet seem to have the greatest difficulty complying with them? When’s the last time a Republican presidential campaign was fined by the FEC? I remember Clinton/Gore racking up the biggest fine in FEC history when they tried to sell the country to the Chinese, but I can’t recall any significant action against the Republicans. I’m sure somebody will fill me in if I don’t have the full story here.

Posted by: TL at May 22, 2004 09:38 PM

TL - you will find Republican campaigns fined for campaign law violations just as the Democrats as there are many arcane rules that inevitably get broken by both parties.

However, I think that you can say with the explosion in Democrat 527’s like the billionaire-funded MoveOn.org that the Democrats are working the loopholes in some outrageous ways.

Posted by: Robin Roberts at May 22, 2004 09:48 PM

I’m sure there are lots of immaterial infractions by both sides because of all the screwy rules, but it seems like there have been lots of major fines of Democrats’ campaigns, but no real big fines of Republicans along the order of what happened to Clinton/Gore.

Posted by: TL at May 22, 2004 11:22 PM

My experience with one aspect of campaigns follows.

As a former Democrat and (now Republican) and as a former prosecutor, I can tell you that I have NEVER PERSONALLY SEEN a Democrat who did not want convicted felons to vote. (Most know that it could easily be them soon).

Republicans, on the other hand, prefer to follow the law of each state and not allow felonious voting! That aspect of the law does differ from state to state.

Posted by: leaddog2 at May 23, 2004 09:26 AM

Actually, leaddog, as a former registrar I can tell you that many states (Including Ohio, where I was a registrar.), allow convicted felons to vote LEGALLY, provided they have completely finished their terms, including post-incarceration supervision.

Which is as it should be.

If you do wrong, you must pay your debt to society, but once you have done so, you should be restored to the condition you were in before you committed your particular crime.

Posted by: eric at May 23, 2004 12:03 PM

You gotta love the whole thing. What a fiasco.

To me it’s Kerry taking the Massachusetts voters for granted. Suddenly they’re hosting a non event and he expects them to be OK with it. OH MY.

The really troublesome aspect of all of this is how this lesson is wasted on McCain et al. They will never admit that this legislation was badly crafted and has done more harm than good. To do that would be to call into question most of the work the congress does, and well we can’t have that now can we?

What I like about it though is that it’s getting a fair amount of ink and it’s looking like what it is: a shell game to circumvent the law.

Posted by: skip at May 24, 2004 03:39 PM

Milton Friedman said it best: “The government solution is usually worse than the problem.” So we have these sham laws political blowhards will support to cop the appearance of moral superiority which signify………nothing.

A couple things: No.1 Money is not corrupting, people are. Blaming inanimate objects (guns, alcohol, money) instead of the actors is the hallmark of the Nanny State. When you obsolve all sins based on the presence of the Evil Inanimate Object, you only encourage the corrupt toward more corruption. For what is a 527 but the legal circumvention of McCain-Feingold?

No.2 The media’s constant drumbeat is ‘entirely too much is spent (wasted?) on political campaigns’. The fact is we spent 7 times as much on potato chips. What’s their point? If I am George Soros, or Paul Allen, or Donald Trump and I like Dennis Kucinich, why should I be limited in my support of him? That’s a direct infringement of the 1st Amendment. Give Dennis a few billion and see what happens. If money alone dictated political outcomes, Ross Perot would still be President with Steve Forbes his VP. My guess is Kucinich couldn’t win the election with Ft. Knox behind him. Why? Because money is never the sole factor in any election. Does it help? Certainly. But having a platform that appears to apply to this planet has a lot more to do with electability. This is what dooms a Dennis Kucinich.

No. 3 If unlimited amounts of money are allowed to pour into political campaigns, only the rich will run this country. Look around people: we’ve got 2 Skull & Bones rich kids battling it out right now. Like limiting each campaign to total expenditure of $46/week is going to open things up for Peter Bailey and the Savings & Loan? No. But it won’t much change the present political landscape, will it? We’ll still have egomaniacs like George Soros dictating the rules he unilaterally retains the rights to circumvent.

All I’m suggesting is we PUBLISH the source of every donation over $5000. No foreign money. No money from corporations, organizations or ‘committees’, just individuals. Otherwise the source will be able to ‘hide’ behind a facade and pretend to be someone/something else.

While we’re at it, let’s have each candidate publish, at their own expense, a 16-page position paper, with one topic per page. Let the topics be chosen by a plebiscite of the people - something like “The War”, “Terrorism”, “Health Care”, “Social Security”, “How Much Water You Should Be Allowed w/ Each Flush”, “Ecology”, “Energy”, “Paying for George Soros’ Prescriptions” - you pick the rest. Each candidate has one page to summarize their beliefs. They could leave the page blank if they wish - or simply say “I have no opinion of my own, I must agree with you” or some other BS they enjoy piling on the hustings.

Make the whole thing open - and get the promises (like, say “A Middle-Class Tax Cut”) in writing. As MasterCard would say, “Priceless”.

Won’t happen. Just a thought.

Torpedo!

I love it! Let’s make sure you never switch to decaf!

Posted by: Joel Gaines at May 24, 2004 10:22 PM

Well T-8, I have no idea what your talking about. ‘Lets publish the source of every donation over $5000???????????????’
Let me sell you a clue. Every donation is ultimately from an individual. And its declared. 527s. DNC. RNC. Kerry. Bush. Its all declared. And starting at dollar 1. Oh and 527’s and political parties- banned from accepting foreign donors.
But wait! There is a loophole! 501c3’s. Typical 501c3 are the NRA and the sierra club… Their primary purpose cannot be lobbying, their donors are secret until well after the election and foreign donations are accepted. So what you say? Some people have created 501c3 that only claim to be non lobbying groups, but in fact spend all their money on advertising and only at the election. So China for example could pour money into them…
And the punchline- its the republicans who are doing it. Why arent we hearing anything about them? no transparency. Who the hell knows what the hell they’re doing.

Posted by: mike at May 25, 2004 07:57 AM

Loofa: Thanks for the clue offer. Golly, I never realized donations came from individuals!

That’s the point: as long as there are ‘loopholes’, someone’s going to exploit them. I said NO ORGANIZATIONS, didn’t I? Not the NRA, not the Sierra Club, not the Ming Ho Firecracker Co. - no one.

Sounds like you have an axe to grind, but do it somewhere else. I’m saying NO ORGANIZATIONS.

That’s tranparency.
