Kerry | One Shy of Sixty

In a reminder of the perils of running for President while one is still an active Senator, a measure that would extend unemployment benefits failed to pass the Senate by one vote. Who didn’t vote you ask? John Kerry of course, who is out on the campaign trail.

This is just another example of how the Bush Administration is enriching its friends at the expense of the unemployed and the working class. If Bush weren’t running for re-election, I might not have had to be out on the campaign trail and could have voted for the bill, after having voted against it.

I will have more concern for America’s values when I am president, as I will simply pay these benefits without requiring Congress to vote on them. I think. Of course, fiscal responsibility will also be a hallmark of my administration and my ushering in a Golden Age of deficit reduction and proceeding with the War and Terror in a more nuanced and intelligent way may require a revisiting of that payment policy, in the spirit of shared sacrifice, but my views here are clear and my commitment unwaivering.

Sir: You need the likes of Gov. Ann Richards and Garrison Keillor, to help write your speaches. Listen to Keillor’s beautiful talk yesterday on NPR with reference to “there is a righteous one among us….” and “Please do not tell me that prisoner abuse is official American policy.” The audience applauded sounding like one completely in agreement.

As an independent I need to hear you talk about these matters now. Sincerely,. L. Cardenas
