Kerry | Democrats Concerned About Kerry Message

Some Democrats are concerned about John Kerry’s slow development of a coherent message. Reuters reports:

At a time when he could be laying out the grand themes for his November battle with President Bush, the presumptive Democratic nominee has been fighting skirmishes with Republican surrogates over his service in Vietnam, his votes on taxes and national security and his claims of support from foreign leaders.

Critics say Kerry, who sometimes focuses on nuance in a medium that values broad strokes and easy to digest labels, has fumbled early opportunities to define his vision for the future and make the case for his campaign.

“I have no idea what the Kerry message is. He has no positive message at this point,” said Democratic consultant Doug Schoen, a former pollster for President Bill Clinton. “I know what his critique is of George Bush, but there has been a virtual absence of a Kerry message.”

There is also concern about how easily Kerry gets thrown off message and lets the Republicans get under his skin:

And in the eight weeks since he clinched the nomination, Kerry has often been thrown off his daily message by aggressive Republican attacks on his 20-year voting record as a Massachusetts senator or on his decorated stint in Vietnam and later opposition to the war.

A three-day bus tour of battleground states to talk about jobs earlier this week turned into a running fight over whether he claimed in 1971 to have thrown back his five medals from Vietnam in protest of the war, or just his ribbons.

Last week Kerry was forced to release his military and medical records after Republicans accused him of double-talk on whether they were available for public view and a former commander questioned if he deserved his first of three Purple Hearts.

“I know what his critique is of George Bush, but there has been a virtual absence of a Kerry message.”

What??? Kerry’s going to create ten hundred thousand bazillionmillion jobs in his first six months or something. And he’s going to make French people like us again. How can ya get any more positive than that???

Y’know, we should have saved some of those Easter Rabbits to symbolize Kerry:

Tall, tries to be tasty, but hollow.

I believe your right, a Kabillion Jobs, free health care, closed borders to protect Jobs, high taxes. That’s about it right? Union jobs for everyone as well?

I Guess Kerry will be at odds with other liberals around the world, who want more open bordrs and free trade, like that Liberal Paul Martin from Canader said today.
Even Communist canada is behind Bush, what gives?

I have seen some soliers in Vietnam, get the third Purple Heart to avoid service… But Kerry has taken it to a new level, He caused a lot of PDS, by his own actions. then votes against soldies. How could anyone respect him… I changed my party and will support bush.. Kerry’s record is, in question. So much so we must think… What am I hearing in the Senate and congress… More of the opps, let me stick my head in the sand— when it blows by… whewwwww … ty

Has anyone besides me noticed Kerry’s resemblance to Fred Munster?

Kerry is Scarry

I thought they had it figured out by now. Kerry just takes the issue of the week, be it jobs, war, terror, fudge sundays, whatever and blames Bush for doing, not doing, being stupid or being an evil genius, and then reminds everyone that he is a decorated war hero. The entire democratic campaign can be summed up as, “BUSH BAD! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR”

I really miss John Edwards. Democrats slit thier own throats early on this time around. The ‘anybody but bush’ tactic is a disaster for them.

Speaking as a leftie (and reluctant democratic)…

Kerry is, for the most part a career politician, and a moderate. His problem is that he talks just like one. This makes the true lefties mistrust him and leaves the soft middle unable to distinguish him from Bush.

Gone is the plain-spoken, energetic, populist delivery of Dean and Edwards. They were replaced by the old guard, more similar to Ted Kennedy’s ilk. Arguably, Kucinich is still around but he might as well be a ghost.

The democratic party made a safe, establishment play. Perhaps in hopes of recapturing more soft middle (undecided soccer moms, nascar dads and the like)? As yet, the base left though looks unimpressed (witness Nader’s actions). Any gain of these undecided voters may come at the loss of the true lefties within the Democratic party, who may decide to vote in protest again this election.

ok, ep2k

The only virtue Kerry has is that he is NOT Osama Dean.

That’s only half the story, Pres.

The other half is that people hate the Petulant Left. This is because the Petulant Left hate people. They have no use for democracy, save as an affirmation of their beliefs. If they cannot get what they want through the ballot box, they take to the courts; if they cannot get they want through the courts, they take to the pulpits, lecture halls, and newsdesks; and, if they cannot get what they want through those means, they take to the streets. Nothing means anything to them but victory, and, once victory is achieved, they tell us to “move on”…presumably, to their next victory.

Dean was greatly disadvantaged by the incompetence of Trippi in supposing that his Internet campaign showed depth of support, rather than speed of gaining support. Still, a sufficient ruthlessness in marginalizing the old media (who view themselves as leaders, and politicians as expendable point men) could have won him the nomination. However, doing so would have caused the political center — call them “Reagan Democrats”, “the Republican wing of the Democratic party”, or, more accurately, “people who would have been comfortable with the Democratic Party of 1964” — to desert it in droves; Dean would have done well to get 35% of the vote.

The liberal-to-progressive establishment chose Kerry as a pis aller and a safe figurehead. Unfortunately for them, he may prove to be an empty suit, a network of holes. If so, and if Hillary is too scared by the bloodletting to grab the vacant throne at Boston in July, the Democrats will have to resign themselves to losing Presidential elections for the foreseeable future.

In re-reading the Title of this thread, I want to ask a question: Who was it that said that Kerry has EVER HAD a message???? I have NEVER HEARD one. It’s all HOT AIR as far as I can tell.
