Kerry | Kerry Pressured to Release Tax Returns

Campaign finance reform activists and Republicans are pressuring John Kerry and his wife, ketchup heiress Teresa Heinz Kerry. The New York Sun reports (subscription req’d):

The returns released by Mr. Kerry’s presidential campaign show that the couple chose the “married filing separately” option. Mrs. Heinz Kerry’s returns were not disclosed.

“I think the public has a right to know,” said William Allison, the managing editor of the Center for Public Integrity, a Washington-based nonprofit that examines the influence of money in politics.

He said failure to release Mrs. Heinz Kerry’s returns “could set a dangerous precedent for the future of politicians hiding behind the skirts of their wives to keep their financial dealings secret.”

“Over the course of his career, John Kerry has indicated that he would tap into his wife’s wealth if he needed to for political purposes,” Mr. Allison asserted.

A former general counsel for the Federal Election Commission, Lawrence Noble, said he would also urge Mrs. Heinz Kerry to release the tax data.

“With independent spouses making independent money, these are difficult questions,” said Mr. Noble. “There is a public interest,” he added.

“Anytime you have some running for president or vice president, the public really wants to take a look at the people and any potential conflicts that exist, and the source of their income,” said Mr. Noble, who runs a Washington watchdog group, the Center for Responsive Politics. He said of Mr. Kerry, “There have been questions about how much he benefits from her assets.”

The New York Post also reports:

There was new GOP pressure on Democrat John Kerry to release the tax returns of his mega-rich $525 million wife Teresa yesterday after it was learned that Kerry once said a politician who refuses to release tax returns can’t be trusted.

When his wealthy GOP Senate challenger balked at releasing tax returns in 1990, Kerry demanded that he “come clean” and made it a central campaign issue, repeatedly asking: “What is he hiding?”

At that time Kerry claimed a wealthy candidate must release returns to prove he pays a fair share in “a tax system that isn’t fair and lets the super-rich get off.”

So far, Heinz Kerry seems unlikely to release the returns, according to this article in The Boston Herald:

“As she is not a candidate for any office, she will not be making additional disclosures,” said Jeff Lewis, Heinz Kerry’s chief of staff.

… She gave the legal limit, $2,000, to his campaign and legally can’t use shared assets to assist him. But she has noted several times that, if fired upon, she might fire back in so-called ”issue ads” to help - which is legal as long as the ads aren’t coordinated with the campaign.

In other words liberals see themselves as subject to different rules than others. Reminds me of famous anti-gun activist Rosie O’Donnell who was caught supplying her bodyguards with guns. Bush should hit Kerry on this point, just like he did on Kerry’s foreign leaders’ support.

I think it would be embarrassing since it would show a dependent exemption for little Johnny.

HEY! She’s already doin’ this stuff. TIDES anyone? :o)

Posted by: Cap'n DOC at April 16, 2004 01:21 PM

This is the type of stuff that I dislike to most about campaigns. This has little to do with the relative merits of the individuals running. I just don’t see how this helps Americans make a good decision.

Posted by: skip at April 16, 2004 01:53 PM

Yea, merits of the guy running are important, right? like this, John War Hero kerry, and his first peurple heart was for what?

Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry insisted on being awarded his first Purple Heart in Vietnam even though his injury amounted to no more than a “fingernail scrape,” his commanding officer at the time now says.

Retired Lt. Cmdr. Grant Hibbard tells the Boston Globe that he can still recall Kerry’s wound, and that “it resembled a scrape from a fingernail,” the paper said.

“I’ve had thorns from a rose that were worse,” Hibbard insists.

Still, the former Navy man remembered that Kerry insisted on receiving a Purple Heart for the wound he said was incurred during a Dec. 3, 1968 skirmish with Viet Cong near Cam Ranh Bay.

“He had a little scratch on his forearm, and he was holding a piece of shrapnel,” Hibbard told the Globe. “People in the office were saying, ‘I don’t think we got any fire,’ and there is a guy holding a little piece of shrapnel in his palm.”

Much to Hibbard’s chagrin, Kerry persisted in his quest for a war decoration for the scratch.

“I finally said, ‘OK, if that’s what happened … do whatever you want,’” Hibbard said. “After that, I don’t know what happened. Obviously, he got it, I don’t know how.”

Kerry’s campaign refused to say whether he remains certain that his skimmer boat had come under fire or whether he recalls his superior officer raising doubts about whether he was entitled to the Purple Heart.

While a Kerry aide provided a copy of a medical report showing treatment for the wound in question, The Naval Historical Center “could not locate a copy of the original card for the incident,” the Globe said.

Kerry was awarded two additional Purple Hearts for subsequent wounds that have also been described as minor. He then invoked a little-used regulation that entitled a triple Purple Heart winner to return to the United States.

Firstly, as the old saw goes; Caesar’s wife should be above suspicion.

Secondly, Teresa Heinz Kerry would be First Lady, that places her in a position to affect policy by the people and the causes she embraces and by her past associations.

Finally, Does she really think she will have a zone of privacy in this scandal hungry media climate? No one could be that naive.

Posted by: feste at April 16, 2004 04:07 PM

There’s your “war hero”. A coward who scratched himself and skidaddled out of Nam as fast as he could, then start his Anti- war campaign, saying he was this village burning, cattle shooting, innocent women and child shooting, torturing, brutal GI operating on orders. Oh yes, Kerry knew one thing, how to LIE, and set himself up for a government job as senator.
I doubt the guy has ever told the truth in his entire life.
And now this tax thing, flip flop kerry as usual.

Posted by: Al-Lat at April 16, 2004 04:15 PM

I’d like to know why Kerry was’nt put on trial by the US Navy to either prove or disprove his comments . Was not McCally tried and sentenced for war crimes?

Kerry may have not committed war crimes. He certainly alledged before a US Senate sub- committee that others did.

He did so in the light that he at the time was indeed a war protestor. An awful lot needs to be explained by a man now seeking the US Presidency.

SO WHEN DOES JOHN KERRY AND HEINZ KERRY ARE A HUSBAND AND WIFE? IN BED ONLY?

FINANCIAL ABOVE FAMILY RELATIONSHIP? IS THAT A FUTURE FIRST FAMILY LOOK LIKE?

WHAT ARE THEIR BENEFITS TO FILE SEPERATELY?

WHEN IT COMES TO THE RACE FOR WHITEHOUSE, WE ARE NOW HUSBAND AND WIFE?

Posted by: pt at April 16, 2004 06:58 PM

”Legally can’t use shared assets to help him” ??

Well, his campaign took a $6 million loan from HIS house to re ignite his run for the presidency. Seems to me that is NOT his money….surely it is her house, since he never made enough money to own that. Her tax return would reveal many things that there is deception and hopefully if she isn’t circumventing the law, it would show her contributions to some interesting organizations that support the 527’s. Lets take a look at that return and see who wears the pants in that family, who is the gigolo, and how little that foreign accented little wench actually paid in taxes. If she paid almost nothing on her wealth, there goes J fricken Kerry’s slam on the rich….enforce the laws not increase the taxes!! This is going to catch him asleep at the switch and draw as much unwanted attention as his fake purple hearts and fake belief in Catholicism. The man is a fraud.

Prediction: Teresa Heinz Kerry; net worth - $525 million, Taxes paid - $0

Posted by: kh at April 16, 2004 10:12 PM

This certainly is a stunning revalation.. Particularly compared with the recent one that the Aug. 6 PDB was part of a string of alarming PDB’s that Bush chose to ignore!

Posted by: typhonus at April 17, 2004 12:27 AM

In John Kerry’s own comments, he says he is an agnostic.

In other words, he DOES NOT believe any God exists. Catholic? Ha! Ha! That is Total Baloney based on his words!

Posted by: leaddog2 at April 17, 2004 12:30 AM

Kerry is the biggest political whore ever! He’ll say anything to turn the trick, even if it means reversing or contradicting himself.

Posted by: navaldisaster at April 17, 2004 01:15 AM

Kerry an Agnostic? I’ll bet his constituents would love to hear that whilst he’s stumping.

leadog2 Got any links for that?

Ty-Phool-US You really can’t READ very well at all, can you? Ben-viniste says there was nothing specific in that PDB. What more do you need? How about a seein’ eye-dog? Crystal Ball?

You are absolutely pathetic.

from master drudge….

In December ‘03, Kerry announced that he loaned his campaign $6.4 Million by mortgaging a share of a Boston home he jointly owns with his wife.

Teresa Heinz Kerry paid cash for the Beacon Hill mansion in January 1995.

But according To Kerry’s own 1994 senate personal financial disclosure [signed May, 15, 1995], Kerry’s own personal net worth was somewhere between a negative $130,000 to positive $34,995.

The current loan on the house carries an annual interest payment of $200,000, records show, more than Kerry’s $158,000 Senate salary.

Cap’n… No Link at the moment. I will look again.
As I recall, he made those comments around the time he called American soldiers murderers at the Senate hearing. I also believe it was brought up again in one of his Senate campaigns. He most likely became a Catholic when he started his Presidential campaign.

Hey look at this flash! Bush beats Kerry It’s funny!

Posted by: Ricky Vandal at April 17, 2004 05:13 PM

Remains of Vietnam MIAs Back in U.S. who might not be dead if it wasn’t for Kerry and his anti American, negotiating for the enemy, traitorous actions.

Posted by: Al-Lat at April 18, 2004 11:00 AM

haha! I like this one:

John Kerry is impotent
John Kerry had his prostate removed last year. Can a man who is impotent be elected president of the United States? NOOOOOOO… Foreign leaders, terrorists, everybody will laugh at us! We can’t elect a EUNUCH as president of the only remaining superpower. We are at war. We must show strength. A nation that’s weak will be attacked. Clinton’s soft reactions to terror are the direct cause of the death of 3000 fellow Americans on 9-11. Apart from this, being impotent has a big influence on the psyche. Do we need a mental case as president in these times of war? Does he use medicine for his ailment? Does this have side effects on his mental capabilities? We need to know this, because nobody wants to repeat the drama unfolding during Kennedy’s presidency, when Kennedy was pretty much drugged all the time and made some serious errors of judgement because of this. If you vote for Kerry, America will have a Eunuch as president!

Mature Al-Lat.

It is irrelevent who paid for the house, only who owns it.

Posted by: Lakhim at April 18, 2004 05:34 PM

Uh, Lakhim, as they used it to finance Kerry’s presidential campaign, who paid for it is really the main thing that matters. If Kerry owns it but paid nothing for it, it could constitute a gift. If he is mortgaging a marital asset that he did not contribute to, it is effectively a contribution to his campaign and, therefore, subject to the $2K limit. This is exacerbated by the fact that they file separately for tax purposes.

Posted by: TL at April 18, 2004 07:10 PM

Good one TL…..Lakhim has been sucked up in the liberal spew. Laws and common sense mean nothing to these guys. Today Kerry said his words that described his war crimes were the words of youthful indescretion. ha ha ha The dumb bastard was 27 at the time. Of course, we know liberals don’t grow up until they get old and fat like Teddy K. Otherwise know as fat bastard, the ghose of Mary Jo is gonna give that boy a stroke the next time he screeeeeds for Kerry!!

Posted by: DickD at April 18, 2004 08:22 PM

Uh no, as all property would be considered jointly owned by Kerry and his wife. There is a large difference between marriage and a gift.

Posted by: Lakhim at April 18, 2004 08:57 PM

so how could he declare a net worth of less than 35K in 1995 if he owned half of it? I smell Leona Helmsley

Posted by: hound at April 18, 2004 11:38 PM

Be careful what you wish for. Cheney has never released his full tax returns either.

Posted by: freg at April 19, 2004 12:43 AM

This is a stupid non-issue.

Posted by: Dody Gunawinata at April 19, 2004 09:07 AM

agree totally, dody. unfortunately kerry has made a habit of using this stupid, non-issue as an issue many times before for his opponents. the issue is if he can stand up to the standards he had for others.

here you go, freg

The difference between John Kerry and a true American war hero, was beautifully displayed this morning on FOX News. They were in Iraq interveiwing a young marine that had been injured several times during battle, but continued to fight despite his injuries. He received the purple heart. When asked if he would like to go home, he replied, ‘No sir, I will not leave. I will stay and fight with my fellow troops’. Makes John Kerry look like……..well……………….Jane Fonda.

Posted by: Jeff B at April 19, 2004 11:31 AM

It troubles me that like John Kerry can just sit on his butt, yell out ‘Free Lunches! I’m a Liberal!’ and still manage to receive a hefty sum of votes.

Worlds easiest job is to run for political office as a Democrat.

Kerry’s scratches were put there by the Viet Cong.

If Kerry’s commander thought they were only scratches at the time, why did he make a recommendation for the medal? Did he say? They are not awarded for any injury sustained on the battlefield and to do so is a serious violation of military code. Is he now admitting to a crime?
If so, why is the Bush administration not enforcing the law.

And as for his more distinguished medals, are Karl Rove’s operators continuing to assert that these two were awarded for cowardice in the face of enemy fire? Does any one believe these people any more or are these among the folks that Lincoln liked to say could be fooled all of the time? Aren’t these the same folks who are keen on catching politicians doing flip-flops, such as when they say “just say no to nation-building”, and “I will limit greenhouse gases including CO2”, and “in my administration, we will tell the truth to the American people”).

We all know how Presidents Karl Rove and Dick Cheney also received their silver star. Like the one George Bush received, it was the one they were awarded in elementary school for simply showing up for class and spelling a few three-letter words.

On the other hand Laura Bush has a number of fine gifts given to her by Ken Lay and other friends and associates at Enron. I heard that Mr. Lay indicated he would publicly ask for their return, if the president reneges on the deal not to prosecute. Does this call for an inquiry?

As for establishing character, ask the former owner of the property George Bush talked local politicians into seizing via the right of eminent domain so he could get his baseball stadium built (at taxpayers expense, of course). This story made the Wall Street Journal. A story of real Christian virtue. You should read it.

Or what happened to that young man Bush implied he had helped during his speech to the Republican Convention? Didn’t Karl’s Rovers tell you all about that?

As for wild 30 year olds, those interested in a bit of sleuthing could find reference to a number of wild parties in Vail, Colorado attended to by GWB during his “wilder days”, the ones where alcohol wasn’t the only substance consumed. These parties made the local papers, given that it didn’t seem to be appropriate behavior for the son of a congressman, so its not as if its not already in the public record.

Now that we have the scoop on all these pressing campaign gossip issues, anyone got any ideas on where the money is going to come from to pay for the mess we’ve gotten ourselves into in Iraq?

A few possibilities include:

1. Have the Fed continue to issue new money (and to hell with inflation, but damn the economy).
2. Use the remainder of the Social Security Trust fund not already spent (these folks are old enough to take care of themselves). This is my guess (it will be sold as an opportunity for alternative retirement plans (like public begging).
3. End the Medicare program (just another government giveaway and what for they’re going to die soon anyway)
4. Borrow the money from the Saudis and Japanese (what we have done up to this point).
5. More taxes (the republicans will call these opportunity fees).
