…This Will Not Do. as the Pink Floyd song goes.

Inspired by a comment on another post, I found some reports via Google - the earliest dating only hours ago - about George W. Bush’s presentation at the 60th annual dinner of the Radio and Television Correspondents Association. This one’s from the Adelaide Advertiser :

US President George W. Bush made a joke about weapons of mass destruction not being found in Iraq at a late-night dinner for Amerian journalists yesterday.

Mr Bush poked fun at himself and other members of his administration at the annual White House dinner for Radio and Television correspondents in Washington.

It goes on to say :

In one, he showed a picture of him down on all fours rummaging under a desk in the Oval Office, saying “Those weapons of mass destruction have got to be somewhere.”

It was quickly followed by another similar picture. “Nope, no weapons over there,” he said.

In his four years on the national and international stage, Mr Bush has often been ridiculed for his tendency to muddle sentences and confuse words - and even invent new ones.

He made this tendency the butt of another of his jokes, saying: “Fortunately my verbal phonation and electrocution have improved.”
[…]
His slide show segued into a sombre ending, showing a group of special forces troops in Afghanistan at the site where they buried a piece of the fallen World Trade Centre in commemoration of the dead from September 11.

The reaction from the humour-impaired {sorry, my objectivity went out for a tea-break} public has been predictable. From Scotsman :

Many CNN viewers emailed the news network to complain at Mr Bush’s “tasteless” remarks.

One wrote: “How can a thinking, caring human being joke about the lies that led to body bags and broken young men and women? I was appalled”.

Another wrote: “It was tasteless and childish. It shows the true man - or child in his case. Why didn’t he throw in a few September 11 jokes as well?”

And another said: “I wonder if the families of our soldiers patrolling there today, who died there yesterday, who may die there today, thought it was funny.”

Parenthetically, I thought Donald Rumsfeld’s comment was the most apposite. Also from the same article:

Defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld was asked about the incident in a press briefing later, but ducked the question.

He said: “To know what I would think, I would have to be there.”

Remember when J.F.Kerry described one of the people sworn to “take a bullet” for him if need be as a “Son-Of-A-Bitch”? Then excused himself as only joking? Rumsfeld does, and what the Kerry team said about it afterwards. As reported in the New York Post :

The Sen. John Kerry team seems more than a mite embarrassed the presidential wannabe cursed out a Secret Service agent as “that son of a bitch” after colliding with him while snowboarding last week. Asked if that’s appropriate language, Kerry’s spokesman, Michael Meehan, tried to wriggle out of answering on Fox News Channel’s “Hannity and Colmes.” Quoth Meehan: “I don’t know. I wasn’t there . . . it’s a hypothetical I’m not interested in . . . I wasn’t there. Were you?”

Rumsfeld has a dry, laconic, and subtle wit. As I’ve said before, he’d be right at home here in Oz.

One thing’s for sure: no-one could possibly imagine J.F.Kerry, nor Jacques Chirac for that matter, ever, under any circumstances, self-deprecatingly and deliberately poking fun at themselves. Some would say they parody themselves unconsciously {Dammit Objectivity, Come back here at once! Come back or this article will go in the Op Ed section!} Sorry about that.

UPDATE : You can go and see what those that served in Iraq think on this issue. And to see the remarks in context, you can look at excerpts in a short video.

Wow so Kerry’s alleged comment about a secret service agent in the heat of the moment is somehow comparable to Bush’s premeditated (this was scripted remember) making nearly 600 americans dead and thousands injured a laughing matter. Yup 600 dead, thats really funny! But then so is Bush’s credibility!

When was Bush going to appologize about lying about the WMD? Oh right, he’s a narcicst, he can never appologize. or visit a funeral for some of those he got killed? Right, he’s going to make 9/11 WTC victim jokes! At ground zero! When he accepts his parties nomination there! Yeah that will be really funny!!

I’ve given up trying to sort out the Trolls, the Parodies, and the earnest but deeply hard-of-thinking. I assume Typhonus post was the second, (I found it hilarious, as it parodied the Bush=Nazi meme so well), but my apologies if it was meant seriously.
Can people please insert <sarcasm> or <satire> tags before and after? The HTML is < for <, and > for >. Thanks.

Typhoid….I have a question for you. Let’s put Bush in Kerry’s shoes. (sorry GW, but it’s only hypothetical) Ok….George is skiing down hill and one of his secret service guys (Bob) accidentally loses control and knocks GW down. Which of the following would be a response from George Bush?

1. SONUVABITCH!

2. WHY DON‘T YOU WATCH WHERE YOU‘RE GOING!

3. YOU CLUMSY IDIOT. YOU‘RE FIRED!

4. Damn it, be more careful next time.

5. Hey Bob….Are you ok? (helping him up) I’m sorry, I didn’t see you coming. Are you sure you’re alright?

If you answered honestly, you now see the difference between a gentleman worthy of being a leader, and a liberal pig.

Posted by: Jeff B at March 26, 2004 12:30 AM

Jeff B, shame on you. Now GW will have to burn a perfectly good pair of shoes.

Posted by: Jrm at March 26, 2004 12:46 AM

My girlfriend just told me she saw some of the heavyweights from the democrat party on tv today saying that they would be voting for Bush……and that they were not few in numbers.

Gives me a little hope for humanity.

Posted by: Jeff B at March 26, 2004 12:47 AM

Same old crap from the brain-dead left.
The Bush hate speal is old already, give it up Tyfoolis.

Notice how the democrats really shut up after getting soundly trashed at these 9/11 hearings? Oldclarke got his ass kicked by Condi as well. Makes all these dems look like fools, and rightly so.

When you see all the action going on behind the scenes, It shows what a busy, profesional team we have in the white house, not the lazy fornicating ones from the previous government, who didn’t act on Al quada when they could have, and if anyone is the blame for 9/11, it’s them.

tyfoolis, bring something to the table, like just what is your sorry assed idiotic democrat wanna be president going to do about this war on terror? Hug them and appease?
No leadership qualities there, and America will be doomed if a moron like that ever got in power.
You lefties are complete freaks.

Posted by: Fat Guy at March 26, 2004 01:58 AM

OK, so the 9/11 hearings are about trashing Democrats now? I thought they were about finding the truth and making the chances of a repeat of the events on 9/11 as small as humanly possible. Silly me…

Posted by: VoR at March 26, 2004 05:39 AM

Now that were on the subject of these hearings, how about Mr Rumsfeld’s acknowledgement he’s said in a meeting that “there aren’t any good targets in Afghanistan and there are lots of good targets in Iraq”?

The best analogy I’ve come across so far is that of someone dropping his car keys in the garage, and then looking for them in the living room, because in the living room the light is better…

They knew they had no evidence that Iraq was involved in 9/11 (to put it mildly), and cynically used the deaths of thousands of innocent people to push the war against Iraq they had been planning ever since GWB’s inauguration.

Alan E Brain

I know Australian humour is, shall we say, robust, but when you’ve got Jeff B, Fat Guy and Redneck Texan fighting your corner, it’s time to refocus - unless you’d endorse their pig/freak/gay chorus. Bush is the CinC. he made the decision to go to war, and it is not appropriate for him to mock the decision. Mock himself, yes - a photo of him ostensibly consulting with his European allies by phone with his fingers in his ears is self-deprecating and amusing. Did LBJ joke about the Gulf of Tonkin? Did Reagan joke about why the Marines were in the Lebanon? No, because they had better judgement.

Posted by: Herbie Geht Bananen at March 26, 2004 06:40 AM

And not a word about any of the hundreds (thousands?) of jokes on Letterman, Leno, and O’Brien that satireize the same subjects. Funny how that works.

Oh I almost forgot… and Clintons parting shot…

A video that looked at his 8 years including Monica, teaching a young staffer how to steal from a vending machine, etc… etc…etc.

Its all political bullshit get a life and a sense of humor.

Posted by: marc at March 26, 2004 06:54 AM

BananaPooPoo, AKA Darkdirk Grab the Sun and turn to page 3, you boob. Your sarcastic commentary on a political arena (and a government) which is NOT yours remains far OffShore, if you get my drift.

Let us put the President’s humor in perspective, shall we? Even a Follywood ActionMovie has its lighter moments. The President ended his presentation by honoring not only the troops, but those who fell on 9/11.

In contrast, we have Anybody but Bush (funny - to me anyway, how that says Sooooo much about the probable Candidate), Senator Kerry, who came home and not only crapped on the victims of that conflict by lying about what happened, he then crapped on his fellow troops and was willing to abandon POW-MIAs for some crass political objective.

Is that funny? Now I realize that Alan is Australian, and I also realize that you are British. Some of your sarcasm and criticism is reasoned, and it some of it even has some merit. Your recent ScudMissile launched at Alan however, is a freakin’ dozen BottleRockets held together by your Thong, concocted over too many Pints of Guinness.

Those of us who have seen more than a few Presidents come and go are a tad more aware of why a little comic relief is well worth it, even when the subject is Death and Destruction. I learned all about BunkerHumor the hard way. Our President had no such opportunity. Senator Kerry squandered his.

Posted by: Cap'n DOC at March 26, 2004 08:01 AM

“Did LBJ joke about the Gulf of Tonkin? Did Reagan joke about why the Marines were in the Lebanon? No, because they had better judgement.”

Actually, it may be because all we got from the Gulf of Tonkin was a Communist Vietnam and Boat People, and all we got from Lebanon was lots of dead Marines. Iraq, at least, is on the road to becoming a democratic state.

Posted by: Dave T. at March 26, 2004 08:24 AM

“Did LBJ joke about the Gulf of Tonkin? Did Reagan joke about why the Marines were in the Lebanon? No, because they had better judgement.”

No, but Reagan did joke about nuking the Soviet Union at the height of the cold war, on air. I thought it was funny, but then I was a kid at the time. I seem to remember the beard-strokers fulminating then, as well.

They had the dinner on Fox News the other night, live. I thought what I could see of it was amusing, although the goddamn camera direction was screwed up - they kept the camera on Bush during the gag photographs, instead of doing something sensible like split-screening it. I had to guess what he was showing half the time.

600 AMERICANS DEAD IS SO FUCKING FUNNY I CAN‘T STAND IT!!!

Posted by: x at March 26, 2004 09:22 AM

The day a talk show host sends 568 Americans to their deaths is the day they ought to refrain from joking about the reasons. My father is a veteran, and his unit served in Iraq, so the fact that 58 of my countrymen died neutralising the WMD threat adds a little heft to my point, if it were actually needed. The others: let’s see an example of a C-in-C joking about the reasons for the deaths of US troops.

You want humour? marc’s exhortation for me to ‘get a life’. Now that’s irony.

Posted by: Herbie Geht Bananen at March 26, 2004 09:37 AM

The reason you guys don’t think it’s funny is because you think Bush decieved you, and then joked about it. You are essentially the butt of his humor.

I look at it differently. Bush made a joke about himself. Self depreciating humor is a good sign that he is not a befuddled moron. He’s not above some self examination, unlike Kerry and the dems who act as if their every word is beyond reproach.

The sad thing is, you guys are all over Bush for disrespecting the troops now, but never go after Dems for dissing the US during the war. How did the soldiers feel when they were about to go over to Iraq and you called them “pawns” of the Republicans, used in a cynical attempt to get “Oil for blood” You must be consistant in your critisism for me to take your complaints seriously.

I have lost count of the different Button and Banana Names here and (NOW) in different languages as well. What Democratic campaign person is writing all of the stuff that seems to be repeated over and over and over and over and coming in under different banana names, etc? Some people see it as humorous, well, kinda, sorta! At least Laughing beats Crying, ya know!

Actually, as long as all the Bananas don’t catch the honesty, intelligence, and reason-killing Tony Foresta virus, they MIGHT be a candidate for Triage, or at least Life Support. Well, on second thought, I can at least read them without laughing (MUCH). He-He! Ha! Ha!

What is it about Republicans that makes them think they can tell jokes and then mock my patriotism and sense of humor when I express how unfunny I think they are? I don’t fall down and I don’t make mistakes. That joke is not funny because it implies that going to war may have been decided on the basis of a mistake or faulty information, rather than the alleged lie it is important for me to remind you of . . . constantly.

Back in Vietnam, when we weren’t looking for our dog after I ran our boat over a mine, we would tell jokes. I know funny jokes. Just ask my band of brothers. And this one isn’t funny. Really.

what if clinton made a joke about drive-by shootings?

wouldn’t that suck. i mean, it would be like he is trivializing all the victims of that senseless violence. where’s nntk? he’ll back me up. no way would clinton do it. no way. well, at least we’ve proven there are enough thin-skinned idiots that would have called him on it. ah, scratch that, they’re hypocritical enough to give ol’ slick a pass - if he would have done it, that is.

it’s jokes like these that prove that we need a regime change here. kerry won’t make jokes about shooting people. least of all the vice president.

oops </satire>

Posted by: wafflestomper at March 26, 2004 10:48 AM

Leave Snowman out of this. Bush is the issue. The only way that allegation sticks to him is if freeing 27 million Iraqis from Husseins clutches counts for nothing. That is what makes it satire. For the personality impaired, let me explain. The reason his joke was funny is that certain people have become so obsessed with the WMD issue they have lost any capacity to see the other reasons we went to Iraq, either stated (as they were, check the record) or unstated (see Flypaper Strategy™). Therefore they wont stop drolling on about WMD, therefore they expect Bush to search the white house looking for them. Hence, satire. Needless to say you have to have 1.no sense of humor and 2.enough myopia to not see all the good things that the Iraq policy has already accomplished in order to not get this joke. Funny that nobody asks the soldiers in the field if they think they have failed in their mission because there are no WMD. Tell ya what, lets see who gets the most military votes this fall.

Get a life? Get a grip. Wrap your tail around the nearest branch. My original response to your comment still stands. If Kerry can have a meeting in which the assasination of seven Senators is discussed and later call it a joke, I’m wondering what he has for a SENSE of real humor. But then again, he has no sense, so asking for humor is a LostCause.

I am so sick and tired of WMDs being the main thing that Dems are throwing at Bush. It doesn’t mean they are not hidden somewhere. I mean, Hussein was hidden in a little hole in the ground, why wouldn’t he hide his weapons? Anyhow, I am tired of those who gloss over the good that has been done by our troops since we’ve been over there. It should be a great relief to all that SH is not in power and Iraquis are going to get a taste of democracy. How nice it is to sit here in our free country and condemn our President and our troops while innocent people over there are finally finding out what freedom is. We tend to take ours for granted.
As for Kerry, I’m tired of reading about how he changes his mind about major decisions, like the the war and the Fetus Protection Bill. I do not want someone who cannot make up his mind about his own past decisions running our country. Also, Kerry was in Detroit today proposing “way out there” plans to create jobs but now a lot of Democrats aren’t even supporting him because of the estimated costs of his “ideas.” And I REALLY don’t want a man who doesn’t want to protect pregnant women and their unborn children. I just hope people can look past personal feelings towards the candidates and look at their actions and where they stand on the issues. Isn’t that what we’re supposed to be doing?

Yes, it’s a bit annoying that Osama bin Loopy is still out there, but when I hear all those lefties ask “Where is Osama?”, I recall how last October they asked the same question about Saddam. We settled that first question, I figure we’ll settle the other.

They whine about Halliburton getting the contract to build so much of Iraq, as if there were more than a handful of companies able to take on a task this big, and Halliburton is the best-qualified AMERICAN company to do it.

The real joke though, is that the Democrats can’t come up with a better strategy than this.

Democratic commission member Richard Ben-Veniste disclosed this week that Rice had asked, in her private meetings with the commission, to revise a statement she made publicly that “I don’t think anybody could have predicted that those people could have taken an airplane and slam it into the World Trade Center . . . that they would try to use an airplane as a missile.” Rice told the commission that she misspoke; the commission has received information that prior to Sept. 11, U.S. intelligence agencies and Clarke had talked about terrorists using airplanes as missiles.

Yes, it’s a bit annoying that Osama bin Loopy is still out there, but when I hear all those lefties ask “Where is Osama?”, I recall how last October they asked the same question about Saddam. We settled that first question, I figure we’ll settle the other.

And when they caught him, it was all a conspiracy, It was fixed, a plan, had him hidden and waited for when the announcement would help… blah blah blah.

These marxist-Democrats suffer from severe mental dementia

Posted by: Fat Guy at March 27, 2004 08:12 AM

The Liberals are unified in their pursuit to vote out George W. Bush by voting John Kerry right? Wrong.

Posted by: Jeff MacMillan at March 26, 2004 08:46 PM

I left to a link to a story on another string. Looks like half the Democrats are endorsing Bush, LoL!

Thats bad when your own party starts walking across the floor on you. Kerry’s way too far in left field for them.

oh yes, my posts on this site are definitely causing more of our soldiers to die in iraq.

GET A (bleep) CLUE YOU (Bleep Bleep). AND THEN GET UP OFF YOUR (BLEEP) AND GO EXERCISE FOR A BIT.

damn right they are! But being the typical moron that you are, you never thing about the consequences of your actions. You give the terrorists hope, so they keep fighting. Simple enough? Idiot. traitor.

People:

Please, please could we have more light and less heat?

I know it’s difficult when someone is either so obtuse or so blindly partisan that they can’t see the obvious.

(You mean like how Bush Lied, People Died?)
(You mean like how the Ultra-Left are Traitors?)

Yes.

Those on both sides of the debate on Iraq feel strongly about it. Then there are a few Trolls and other low-lives who get a kick out of insulting random strangers.

Please take a step back, take a deep breath, and realise something : Most people on the opposite side of you genuinely want the best for America, and the World. So show them some respect, especially if they’re wrong.

Also, as my Grandma used to say, “You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.”

What’s the point of posting a comment if it’s not in the hope of either convincing the other person that you’re correct, or more often, trying to convince lurkers and bystanders who may be misled by them? In either case, calm, courteous and fact-filled posts are far more convincing than “ARE TOO! ARE NOT!”.

So I’m drawing a line here. What’s been posted in the past is over. I’ve certainly been guilty of using intemperate language and replying in kind in the heat of the moment, so can’t blame anyone else. But from now on, show a little respect, please.

Thanks.

Getting back onto the topic of this post…. I said that no-one could imagine Kerry engaging in self-deprecating humour. He takes himself, far, far too seriously for that.

But whatever his faults, Kucinich isn’t quite so up himself (as we say in Oz). Now if only his policies weren’t so… er… I’ll stop now.

Posted by: Alan E Brain at March 27, 2004 08:38 PM

Alan Your lack of imagination isn’t Kerry’s fault. :) Kerry will do fine … once he becomes President.

Alan Just a suggestion.

You might want to setup a “conventions page” that would detail suggested methods of posting. You could include the codes you listed above, with other conventions that would help make it easier to read the threads. You could even have the page open from a link into a seperate smaller window. :)

Anthony It wasn’t the raw talent, was it? :o)

Posted by: Cap'n DOC at March 28, 2004 01:24 PM

“Kerry will do fine … once he becomes President.”

Roflmao. Even despite his 20 year track record of voting in the minority on bills? Despite Kerry never putting his name down on any major pieces of legislation that gets passed?

Posted by: Jeff MacMillan at March 28, 2004 02:21 PM

Jeff: I meant he would do fine … at the Radio and Television Correspondents Association. ;-)

Posted by: Anthony at March 28, 2004 05:14 PM

Alan, I have found that the best way to avoid having my IP banned from the Command-Post, is to avoid posting on the thread that is being over-moderated.

I agree with most everything you have ever posted here, but let me inform you, Americans (left or right ) dont like to be threatened.

Posted by: Redneck Texan at March 29, 2004 01:38 PM

Maybe this link has been posted before, so, please excuse me…but this is VERY interesting, if you read past the first two…the other 99 responders (proud military and their families) are RIGHT ON and support President Bush!!
