| Kerry Takes Early Democratic Lead in Iowa Caucus
"Democrat John Kerry opened a narrow early lead on Monday over John Edwards in Iowa's presidential caucuses, the first crucial test of the 2004 campaign, with front-runner Howard Dean and one-time favorite Richard Gephardt trailing.
The first official results gave Kerry a lead in what would amount to a stunning political comeback for the Massachusetts senator, who just weeks ago was lagging in the polls and given up for dead by many analysts.
Kerry led Edwards 37 percent to 33 percent with more than a third of Iowa's 1,993 precincts reporting. Edwards, a North Carolina senator, also had lagged in the polls until roaring into the top tier in the last week."
