At the Democratic debate in Iowa today, Howard Dean's rivals laid the smackdown on him, but Dean responded by taking a one-lump shot at them:

In a feisty, first debate of the election year, Howard Dean drew fire from fellow Democrats on Sunday over trade, terror and taxes, then calmly dismissed his rivals as "co-opted by the agenda of George Bush."

Specifically, he said,

"What has happened to so many Democrats in Congress is that they've been co-opted by the agenda of George Bush, who came into office with 500,000 fewer votes than Al Gore. And what we need is a Democrat who's going to stand up to George Bush."

SF Gate has a point-by-point breakdown of the debate.

On the war, Dean is staying strong with his position that we should not pull out of Iraq too early. On the other hand, there's this:

Carol Moseley Braun said the United States has lost its focus on al-Qaida and bin Laden while the Bush administration goes "off on what I've called a misadventure in Iraq."

Matthew Stinson has more on the key points of the debate.

There was a debate today?

Uhh, guys, putting it on against two NFL playoff games and the BCS championship isn’t the way to bring in viewers…
