Clark | Clark Says He Would Avoid Pre-Emptive Strikes

The Nashua, NH Telegraph offers an account of Wes Clark's Thursday assault on Bush foriegn policy. Among the noteables:

“I think my first act is to put the pre-emptive strike doctrine into the shredder,” Clark said to applause from a crowd of more than 150 jammed into the college’s lounge.

Clark got emotional after lashing out at Bush’s failure to publicly meet with the families of the more than 400 soldiers who have been killed in Iraq.

“He will go to a dozen fund-raisers for re-election, but he won’t go to one home and put his arms around a mother who has lost a child and that’s wrong,” Clark said, his eyes welling up with tears.

So glad to see that the good general has a feel for context-appropriate rhetorical imagery.

Eliminating the first strike doctrine is a hollow gesture since it is clear that the Islamists have already struck, 9/11, and continue to strike where they can.

BTW, does anybody know when and where the US executed it preemptive strike on German forces after we preemptively declared war on them after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor? Gosh… seems like there is a long standing preemptive strike doctrine already in place.

In my comment from last Tuesday at this entry at John Moore’ blog [it is my 2nd comment at that entry, and is currently 2nd from the bottom at that web page], I provided links to some items from conservatives and liberals on the issue of pre-emptive state action. This issue is actually a philosophical one, and should be looked at in that way. As the links that I provided in that comment show, conservatives and liberals have agreed that the support of pre-emptive war is part of a leftist and Democratic agenda; it is something that liberals should be enthusiatically supporting.

In my view, it is sad that so many people from my own party - including many people who claim to be conservatives - have bought into this dangerous doctrine of pre-emptive warfare and government action. This statist philosophy is leftist in nature, and violates traditional conservative and constitutionalist values… It goes against the wisdom of our Founders, and against the principles of republican liberty upon which our great nation was founded.

And once we’re on this dangerous path, it could become difficult getting back on track. That’s what the Democrats, liberals, and “progressives” do - they want to take us as far off course as possible.

Sometimes Republicans do that too.
