Dean | Dean's Supporters Get Him Out of a Jam

Late this last week Howard Dean announced that his supporters would decide whether or not he should refuse federal matching funs. As I discussed here, one of the motives behind the decision was Dean's inability to make the decision himself for political reasons. He would have been painted eight shades of hypocrite. Well, his people delivered ... and pretty close to unanimously. 85% for refusing matching funds, 15% against. So now the guiltfree Dean can keep his cash machine going all the way to November. As political calculations go, this one was pretty good.

Howard Dean is not a hypocrite simply by shifting the blame of his own hypocrisy on to his own supporters? Geeze what a bunch of lap dog voters these people are. I love it! All lap dog, no substance.

Dean has discovered the best known method for being all things to all people…

It was a clever move. But how do you decide what margin of victory to use? 100% and 51% both look obviously fake. I think I would have used 75% to send the message that my ‘voters’ were obviously conflicted about this decision. 85% says I was out of touch with my supporters.

Interesting point … I think you are right that 51% would have been too small a margin, but I am not sure 85% is too much. Yet, it is borderline. Its sort of like an election in Zimbabwe or something.

I still believe the #s though. It was sort of a “I want to win, but I can’t win unless I renege on the finance reform laws, what should I do?” kinda question. Of course the faithful buy in wholesale.

Seekers of truth invariably turn to lies.

I count the falling tears
They fall before my eyes
Seems like a thousand years
Since we broke the ties
I call you on the phone
But never get a rise
So sit there all alone
It’s time you realize …
