Dean | Flirting with Southern Disaster?
Gosh, I hate to keep talking about Dean but he seems to be the only one doing anything interesting at the moment. Following on the heels of his confederate flag comments, Dean has apparently decided to make the southern vote just a little harder to win, telling a Tallahasee audience (not true southerners of course) that southerners need to stop voting on "race, guns, God and gays." On a lighter note, I was right again. Dean also said Tuesday that Bob Graham is on his "short list" for VP. Update: More from Dodd and Chris Muir. Isnt Florida in he south? And wasnt winning Florida kind of important for the Dems last time around? Ooops. Posted by: Mark Buehner at November 6, 2003 10:39 AM Florida is in the South… but for those of us from the South it doesn’t really count. I think people in other states are more likely to be offended by the remark than the people of Florida. But yes Florida is important which is why I suspect bob Graham will be on the “short list” for just about everybody. Except Bush of course. Posted by: Mike Van Winkle at November 6, 2003 10:46 AM So what are people supposed to vote on? Hair? Posted by: Don't vote on these issues so I can at November 6, 2003 11:11 AM IMHO, God and gays are not linked issues, but for many religious people, they are. And, for many, matters of faith are all encompassing. How one live and votes has to be consistent with their faith-informed understanding. So, Mr. Dean, are you now saying that Southerners of such a religious persuasion need to quit being who they are? Would you make that demand of (say) Nation of Islam members? Just asking…. MG Posted by: MG at November 6, 2003 11:56 AM First, he wants to appeal to those poor stupid Southerners who fly Confederate Flags on their pick-up trucks, then he tells them to stop basing their votes on race, gun, God and gays. Someone led him to believe his audience in Jacksonville or Tallahassee would be those ‘damn yankees” from Vermont? Poor Dean, someone on his campaign team needs to educate this man about Southern voters. WAIT, scratch that idea and let him keep digging his hole deeper. Posted by: TexasGal at November 6, 2003 01:56 PM florida is not part of the south. I lived there for 8 years and i can tell you it is only an extension of new york and… quebec.. yes quebec.. anyone that has lived there can tell you every other license plate on the road is either from new york or quebec and of course they all drive 15 mph under the speed limit. And another thing im sick of all these posts about.. “those poor stupid Southerners who fly Confederate Flags on their pick-up trucks” some of us actually had ancestors who fought for the south and are proud of that fact.. It wasnt all about slaves you know… Posted by: gijoe at November 6, 2003 02:21 PM The panhandle and the north are about as far from New York as you’ll get in my experience. Good salt of the earth folks. Not gonna too pleased with a candidate who thinks their hick bumpkins because the Second Amendment and freedom of religion are important to them. There is no way this jackass gets the nom. Gephardts going to take it. If not this election may make Mondale look like a close call. Posted by: Mark Buehner at November 6, 2003 03:30 PM //some of us actually had ancestors who fought for the south and are proud of that fact.. It wasnt all about slaves you know…// gijoe, Sorry I forgot my sarcasm quotes around that phrase. I agree with 100%. Many of my ancestors fought and died for that flag (16 sons, grandsons and son-in-laws in one family alone) and I’m pretty sick and tired of those who want to reduce that sacrifice to an issue about slavery. Posted by: TexasGal at November 6, 2003 04:08 PM You know, if they really didn’t want us (except to kick around periodically), why didn’t they just let us go back in 1861? Posted by: Ambo_68 at November 6, 2003 04:33 PM From my experiences in Florida, It is kind of split. The northern part especially the panhandle definitely seems like the south. While everything from about Orlando on down is definitely not the South :) LOL In that respect as a native Californian, I think I can safely say it is much like California. More conservative north and more liberal south. Deans remarks while not exactly smart should not hurt his base. He is too far ahead to be anything less than a major contender at this point. Furthermore, atleast the man has the sack to admit when he made a mistake. GWB told B. Hume Iraq was going fine according to him. He was like what problem? Just got images of the Mad magazine guy in my head :( Why worry? right …lol But seriously, Its going to be either Dean or Gephardt. Given Gephardts lack of sack and fire, I would say Dean is the man. Furthremore, in any televised debate I would shit my pants as GWB trying to argue against Dean. Dean is just too damn sharp for him. He might have a chance if he forms a huddle with his handlers before answering each question. Just saw something on Newshour with Jim Lehrer(sp)..Rumsfield (Numbers do not necessarily equate with capability)…referring to troop cuts…. In Iraq if you cut the numbers by about 30,000. I think you have a capability cut. Unless you are are insulting the Army and complimenting the Marine Corps. Either way, it was just a CYA statement necessary to justify the admins desire to reduce troops by election time. Posted by: what? at November 6, 2003 07:06 PM Senator McCain on News with Jim Lehrer…. I am currently watching this and he is saying that about every negative metric you could think of regarding the situation in Iraq is going up. # of Attacks, #Killed,Complexity, etc.. etc… McCain wants more troops not less. McCain is saying “they know our electoral calendar and large losses can affect American opinion.” He just called them smart like the Vietnamese. Most people would argue that McCain is a pretty indepndent opinion. He has been there and I trust his opinion. Why is this admin still underestimating this problem? Should we just wait and hope that everything will be ok, like just about everyone on this blog did about the WMD find? Posted by: what? at November 6, 2003 07:13 PM There is no way this jackass is going to get the nom…Gephart is going to take it Dean gets support of Major Unions http://www.usatoday.com/news/politicselections/nation/2003-11-06-labor-dean_x.htm Mark, you wanna take that Gephardt thing back? HAHA Posted by: what? at November 6, 2003 07:31 PM … I hope Howard Dean will remember, a Southern man don’t need him around anyhow…. Sweet Home Posted by: torpedo_eight at November 6, 2003 08:08 PM Naw. Its incredibly early. Gephardt has the perfect triangulation strategy. He can stake himself as tough on terror, but unhappy with how Bush handled it. He can get the union vote and eventually he will get the DNC and Hollywood money (once the Clintons are convinced he cant win in 04). The Clintons play heavy into this. They wont let another Dem win in 04, but they done want Dean losing so bad that he trainwrecks the party either. My money says the grown ups in the party come to their senses and run with Gephardt. Posted by: Mark Buehner at November 6, 2003 09:42 PM torpedo_eight Are you planning on flying somewhere soon? I’m buying the ticket.
