Clark | William Saletan on the Clark and Lieberman Bail

From Slate:

But imagine how much worse today's media drubbing would have been had Clark or Lieberman pulled out alone. The story would have been that an isolated loser was making himself an isolated quitter. Together, Clark and Lieberman have enough clout to create an alternative, if weaker, story line: The problem isn't them; it's Iowa—and without their participation, the caucuses mean that much less.
Here! Here! The problem is Iowa. The Caucuses are becoming more and more insignificant for presidential elections. Since 1972 the Democratic Caucus winner has only gone on to the presidency once, Jimmy Carter in 1976 (and even here there was a major undecided vote). Furthermore they have a less than stellar record at even picking the candidate that will go on to win the Democratic nomination. So there seems to be no shame in focusing your energies on more important states. Remember, the skip Iowa strategy helped McCain win big in the 2000 NH primary.

I just last night posted six new entries at my blog - some of them are on the Iraq war situation.

The last of the six, however, points out connections between Wesley Clark & the Clinton administration and Osama bin Laden terrorists.

The policies of Clinton and Clark, with regard to foreign affairs, were horrific. Clinton was undoubtedly a very, very, terrible president, and Clark would make a terrible president as well.

Go beyond 2004 for a moment.

Let’s say Bush keeps the encumbent’s favor and wins the election. (As I think he will.)

Given that the 3 grandmas, Pelosi, Feinstein & Boxer, used a great deal of party discipline to keep the voters from getting much of a choice; what happens to their reasoning in the fae of Schwartzenegger’s victory?

Politicians pay no price?

In 1994 the HOUSE turned from the democratic column to the republican column. True. It’s close.

And, it just happened in the senate. The republicans sit in the majority.

In politics, this means the CHAIRMANSHIPS go to the republicans. And, if the republicans BOOST their presence in 2004 … In other words, let’s say that Bush has coattails, where does that put the democrats?

It seems the republican party is growing and absorbing lots of factions. While the democrats seem to be heading into a Johnny One Note grove. Anti-war. Anti-American. And, what if they then can’t win?

In other words, what kind of a defeat would bring change?

Can the media just keep on beating the dead horse that Bush isn’t liked? What if this causes a majority of Americans to vote for Bush?

Doesn’t it seem odd that Schwartzenegger won without much fanfare?

That a new kind of patriotism seems to encompass most Americans these days? That they seem to be there for the president at the same time you don’t see much flag waving?

What if the democrats are just clueless?

What’s it going to take to have policians wake up and find the world has passed them by?

I’m betting that Dennis Miller runs against Boxer in 2004. And, I’m betting that one senate seat will go to the republicans. And, if nothing else, that will give Jay Leno a run for his money. Don’t you think Dennis Miller would make a wonderful senator from California?

When reality dawns will it come bursting in on the sounds of laughter everywhere?

I am dumbfounded at democratic assertions that Schwartzenegger’s win bodes badly for the President. We are supposed to believe that a vote against Davis was a vote against an INCUMBENT, and, as such, all INCUMBENTS are in trouble, including the sitting President.

I start to laugh, then I realize they’re serious. Apparently, the vote in California had NOTHING to do with Davis lying about the state of the state going into the election, the fact that he’d sold the state out on long-term energy contracts that they’ll be paying on for years to come, the fact that state democrats fueled their run-up in state spending on the backs of the top 5% wage earners, only to see their most excellent plan in the ’90s turn into a disaster as the Dot Bomb bust unemployed some of their best mules.

No folks, this all has to do with incumbents. Voters aren’t angry because their trust was betrayed and the state mismanaged, they just have a bug up their ass about INCUMBENTS.

Reminds me of Peter Jennings’ comments about the voters having a ‘temper tantrum’ in 1994 - throwing out all the incumbents - while neglecting to mention the party affiliation of all the fallen incumbents.

Democratic.

Poor stupid electorate. I hope to God they believe this one - otherwise Hillary’s conquest to bring world socialism inside the Beltway is going to take a real ugly turn.

No one talks about Gray Davis’ replacement getting fewer votes than the governor. That was supposed to be a decent excuse should Gray get the axe. Didn’t happen. Drop that story, on to the next one. This was about INCUMBENTS.

Yeah, right.

I count the falling tears
They fall before my eyes
Seems like a thousand years
Since we broke the ties
I call you on the phone
But never get a rise
So sit there all alone
It’s time you realize …
