Dean | Dean-Clark in 2004?

Gen. Clark Reportedly Is Asked to Join Dean

Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean has asked retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark to join his campaign, if the former NATO commander does not jump into the race himself next week, and the two men discussed the vice presidency at a weekend meeting in California, sources familiar with the discussions said.

This is a very interesting development, should it come to past. Firstly, as I have argued (here, here and here) Clark is not in the best position to enter the race and a Dean-Clark ticket would generate some buzz. Of course, it also is a risk, as teaming-up this early would make for a larger target for critics.

Also, USA Today had a story on Clark's potential candidacy that is linked to from here.

Teaming up this early would be a statement of weakness by both parties. It will not happen, and if it does, it will be their undoing.

Gen. Clark made it clear today that he wouldn’t consider a vp slot at this time. He says the only decision he has to make is whether he’ll run for the top spot or remain in the private sector.

Sonds like nothing more than wishful thinking on Dean’s part.

Lots of polls just out. There is a Fox News/Opinion Dynamics national poll of the Democratic candidates for president; it comes close to the Time/CNN poll last week, but differs greatly from the USA Today/CNN/Gallup poll out yesterday. There’s a massive LA Times poll on the California recall, a Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll on the War in Iraq, a Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll on the war on terrorism, and an ABC News poll on Islam, along with a few other smaller polls. I also updated my exclusive election odds recently. Check them all out at the Political Times.

I could say several things about both Dean and Clark. As I’ve said before, Wesley Clark is a war criminal, something that conservatives, libertarians, and liberals have all agreed upon.

As for Dean, I think that he may not be as liberal as many people say. Conservative youth blogger (and former Bush administration member) Ben Domenech has made this point, as has leading conservative youth blogger Josh Claybourn. Both have predicted that he will be the Democratic party’s nominee.

I am a conservative and a College Republican, so I of course would not support a candidate like Dean, however, I recenly wrote an article containing advice from conservatives to Dr. Dean, about how he may be able to better his chances of winning the nomination, and perhaps the presidency, as well. My piece actually contains advice from conservative journalists who are offering insightful ideas to Dr. Dean, which, if implemented, could help him garner the votes that he needs to win. The focus, though, is on the advice of one particular journalist, and I’ve enclosed in my article his recent piece dealing with a specific issue - one that could have an impact on the presidential campaign. If you’re interested, take a look at my memo to Howard Dean - it is featured in my latest blog entry.

Find out which major issue could provide the key for unlocking the door to Dr. Dean’s chances of winning the White House.

Well, Clark threw his hat in the ring today, but I think the Dean-Clark ticket is still most likely the ultimate result. General Clark would perfectly moderate the fact that Dean has been the most vocal critic of the war, and geographically it also would obviously be another perfect match.

I’d say that’s the most electable ticket the Democrats could come up with at this point.
