The idea that Wiesenthal a camp survivor and until recently still active in the organization that bears his name would sell out the truth for $5 million I find not credible. Suppose evidence came out discrediting this finding? All his work would be discredited.

I think you could buy shading with this kind of money. Places where ambiguous evidence might be favorably interpreted. I doubt that an outright reversal of the facts is likely.

What Arnold bought was benefit of the doubt.

There are times and places in history when we find ourselves suddenly in league with tomorrows villans, at best we can nod our heads and simply move on away from such unpleasantries. Maybe even make some reconcilliation. It is the people who ignore thier past or cover it up that you should worry about.

Anybody know offhand what the SA did during the time Gustav Schwarzenegger was in it, other than march in parades? Back before the Nazis came to power, they were the party’s street army, forcably disrupting the activities of opposing political parties, and defending against similar actions by those parties’ own street thugs (particularly the Communists).

The SA’s leadership was purged (many murdered) during the “Night of the Long Knives” in 1934 when Hitler, having achieved political power, found the political extremism of that leadership to be a liability in building support in business, the Army, and other traditional institutions. The organization was thoroughly eclipsed by the SS, but it was never disbanded until the Reich fell. You can often see at least a few of their brown-shirted ranks and leaders in pictures of parades and other Nazi public functions through the 30s and into the 40s.

Did they continue to perform any security functions (I would think the SS would be loathe to share such responsibilities)? Were they relegated to just showing up for parades like some kind of Fascist Shriners, perhaps also providing punch and cookies at rallies? Less benignly, did they handle activities that the SS didn’t want to dirty its hands with, like the “Crystal Night” violence of 1938?

I think it’s ridiculous to try to smear any political candidate with the conduct of their parents. I suppose there’s an argument that if the family is aware of some sort of “war criminal” behavior, but covered it up, that that makes them some sort of accessories after the fact. The fact that he’s long dead makes it rather less relevant, though no more asinine an issue to raise than the revelation that (gasp!) a professional athlete in the 1970s had a fairly wild sex life.

Still, my interest in the history of the WWII era makes me curious about what Gustav was up to at the time…

What his father was has no bearing on anything, aside from his father. The sins of the father…if any…do not tarnish the son.

The Kennedy family fortune comes from bootlegging. Does that mean that the present day Kennedy family is in any way tainted by the sins of their fathers? Of course not.

The same holds true for AS.

Marty: Given the howls from the Reparationists, most of whom are Democrats (at least on the legislative level), I think it’s kind of hypocritical for any Kennedy to lay claim to their family fortune, while saying that Whites must give up theirs because so many Whites owned slaves. Claims of the latter are tenuous at best, while it’s established record that the Kennedy fortunes were ill-gotten. But since facts have never stood in the way of Democrat Party objectives, don’t hold your breath waiting for them to start.
