CA Recall | Schwarzenegger's Liberal Views Leave GOP Flummoxed

What do you know: A.S. is pro-choice, pro-gun control and pro-gay rights. Read more here at the S. F. Chronicle:

As Arnold Schwarzenegger explodes onto the national political scene as California's great Republican hope, conservatives are increasingly voicing concern over his lack of right-wing credentials.

From talk radio to the pages of conservative journals, Republicans are openly struggling over whether to rally around a man who may break the Democratic lock on state government, or keep their distance from a candidate who appears to be at odds with their core ideology.

Pro-choice, pro-gun control, pro-gay rights -- and yet to identify a single cut he'd make in the state's deficit-ridden budget -- Schwarzenegger would put a new face on the Republican Party from coast to coast.

They can all fuc\ themselves. I’d vote Arnie because he’s a Republican that’s “pro-choice, pro-gun control and pro-gay rights.”

But I live in Virginia.

Furthermore, I can’t stand how these are defined as “core republican values,” they clearly aren’t.

In fact, my sister, who is far more into politics than I am (she’s still considering running for local office!) tells me that the short version of the Texas republican platform (her home state and George’s) doesn’t even mention these subjects.

‘Pro-gay rights’? WTF? Can someone who is literate explain THAT to me? A ‘core value’? A Republican President who says ‘marriage is between one man and one woman, and ‘pro-gay rights’ is a core issue? I’m sorry. I’m glad I live in MT. We rock these folks outta the forum every time they roll this ‘pro-gay rights’ issue onto the floor. GEEEESH. Pay for your OWN medicine and health insurance. They’re NEVER going to get a tax dollar outta me.

Just for my own clarification, isn’t someone who is economically conservative and socially liberal a libretarian not a republican???

Posted by: John at August 15, 2003 02:53 PM

TBox, simply because they aren’t YOUR core values, doesn’t mean they aren’t core values for the majority of the party. I’m in favor of increased rights for gays, such as adoption, but I couldn’t disagree more with the “pro-choice” and gun-control people.

And your sister is dead wrong. This is from the 2002 party platform:

We believe that human life is sacred because each person is created in the image of God, that life begins at the moment of conception and ends at the point of natural death, and that all innocent human life must be protected.

John,

Being pro-gun control just about eliminates any chance Arnold has of being called libertarian. The reality is that he’s a fiscally moderate democrat running as a republican.

Posted by: CleverNameHere at August 15, 2003 03:51 PM

John, I like to think of a libertarian as being “classically liberal” in the mold of Jefferson, Mason, Adams and Franklin. What is commonly referred to today as a liberal is actually communitarian socialism. It doesn’t take a village to figure out who wants to control every facet of your life.

The paradox of goverance is thus: the people who should rule hate the idea of telling people what to do, the people who actually run can think of nothing else.

It takes a village to raise an idiot. Isn’t that what Satan’s , oops I mean Hilary’s, book said?
