Sharpton | Al Sharpton has Foreign Policy Instincts

From Slate:

Moralism and multilateralism: Sharpton wants more transparency and consistency in U.S. relations with other countries. In his book Al on America, he says we "cannot out of one side of our mouth call one nation evil and then enter into a partnership with another nation that can be considered equally or even more evil." He renounces a role as the world's "supercop" and argues that instead of relying on its military, the United States should "invest in other nations." Sharpton also accuses President Bush of sending young black men off to war while doing little for their welfare at home.

Humanitarianism and Africa: Sharpton argues that the United States owes a "moral debt" to Africa. He regards recent U.S. policy on AIDS abroad as insufficient and chides economic policymakers for subjecting African nations to a "debt service they can never pay." He advocates a new Africa policy focusing on debt relief, investment, and "fair trade." Sharpton visited Sudan in 2001 in an effort to stop the human slavery that persists there. He proposes to make America's "selective" humanitarianism more consistent by moving aggressively to eliminate the Sudanese slave trade.

Dictators and Latin America: Sharpton wants an immediate end to the embargo on Cuba, which he says has an "anti-Latino flavor." After visiting Cuba in 2000, Sharpton met Fidel Castro and called him "one of the three most impressive people I have ever met in my life." Sharpton says they had a "talk about the human rights violations—of which I personally saw none." He argues that the United States has "continued to demonize Castro at the expense of good, sound foreign policy." He also believes we've treated Mexico with heavy-handed superiority. Current immigration laws are "biased," he says, and the United States needs a more "respectful relationship" with Mexico.

Yes, only young white men should die for freedom and equality.

WTF?

Surely there is a name for somebody who so consistently makes a total idiot of himself. (Other than Reverend, that is.)

Is this guy (also) a bigot or what? Don’t we have an all-volunteer military? If so, then perhaps he should consider that these self-same young black men he claims are being sent to war have chosen to join the military. Perhaps they join as a way out of the welfare state — can’t say for sure, since I’m not a young black man in the military. What does he propose? Only white, brown, red, or yellow young men be allowed to join? What about women? Or don’t they (or the color of their skin) matter to him?

And he thinks that Castro is one of the most impressive people he has ever met? Maybe he ought to meet some of those who have risked everything to flee Cuba. Now, some of those people and the lengths to which they have gone to escape Castro are truly impressive.

What happened to the laws forbidding regular citizens from engaging in foreign policy and diplomacy? I think we should start exercising them a little more often to include the Carters, Jacksons, Sharptons, and that Nation of Islam guy.

Look to the Church of What’s Happenin’ NOW, and find out if they can’t promote him. OR - Maybe DEAF records would like a new voice. The asshat sounds like a racist.

Until black “leaders” in this county start addressing issues that can’t be defined strictly by race, they will continue to isolate themselves in appeal and national stature. Sharpton’s to be applauded for attempting intervention in the Sudanese slave trade, but if he wants that national stature, he’s going to have to start talking about the WORLD, not just AFRICA, he’s going to have to start talking about all soldiers, not just BLACK SOLDIERS.

As far as human rights violations in Cuba - of course he saw none. But is he boneheaded enough to believe that proves anything? Cuba’s human rights record is ghastly. They treat homosexuality with long prison stays and jail thousands of political prisoners.

Now I know someone can probably make the argument that the US jails political prisoners as well, but such moral equivalence ignores the vast differences in freedoms between the two countries. The story that sticks in my mind to this day is the dissident who was being tortured in one of Castro’s hell holes. He wouldn’t let his torturers between his legs, so they loosened him up a bit by taking a machete to his hamstrings.

Think about that the next time Jimmy Carter starts slobbering all over that old commie fart. The left has strange heroes.

With respect to Cuba, he sounds and awful lot like that Iraqi press minister. On other foreign policy matters, it seems the solution is taking my money and sending it to other countries. He gets my vote…

MikeinHotlanta,

You’re going to choke on your tongue, if you keep putting it way up in your cheek like that.

As you post your comment, please mind our simple comment policy: we welcome all perspectives, but require that comments be both civil and respectful. We also ask that you avoid the extensive use of profanity, racist terms (neither of which we consider civil or respectful), and other boorish language.

We reserve the right to delete any comment, and to prohibit you from commenting on this site, if we feel you have broached this policy. As a courtesy, we will first send you an email noting a violation so you understand the boundaries. We also will frown upon those who suggest that we ban other individuals for voicing unpopular opinions, should those opinions be voiced in a civil and respectful manner.
