Dean’s Pattern of Deception Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean said Wednesday that he misspoke when he told the AFL-CIO he never favored raising the retirement age for Social Security benefits to age 70. Dean acknowledged that he had called for such an increase when the country was faced with a small deficit in 1995, but said he no longer thinks it is necessary. He said former President Clinton set an example of balancing the budget without raising the retirement age. (snicker) “Clinton proved that if you run a decent economy and have a budget surplus and some jobs, then you don’t need to raise the age to extend the life of Social Security,” Dean said in a telephone interview after The Associated Press questioned conflicting statements he has made on the issue. The current retirement age for receiving full program benefits is 65 years and two months. The retirement age will gradually rise to 67 over the next two decades. Dean’s false statement came Tuesday night during an appearance at the AFL-CIO (search)’s Democratic presidential candidate forum. Rep. Dennis Kucinich (search) of Ohio, who favors taking it back to age 65, criticized Dean for saying he’d raise to 68 or 70. Dean responded, “I have never favored a Social Security retirement age of 70 nor do I favor one of 68.” Not only did Dean lie about his position, but Dean is lying about mis-speaking. He thought he could just say it and get away with it, a la Clinton. And before you start this nonsense about him just making a little mistake, maybe you should remember this little flap that happened on June 22nd. You see, there is this famous news show called MEET THE PRESS with Tim Russert, and Dean appeared and had this exchange: Russert:…calling for that, and this is what Howard Dean said. “The way to balance the budget, [Gov. Howard] Dean said, is for Congress to cut Social Security, move the retirement age to 70, cut defense, Medicare and veterans pensions, while the states cut almost everything else. ‘It would be tough but we could do it,’ he said.” Dean: Well, we fortunately don’t have to do that now. Russert: We have a $500 billion deficit. Dean: But you don’t have to cut Social Security to do that. Russert: Why did you have to do it back then? Dean: Well, because that was the middle of—I mean, I don’t recall saying that, but I’m sure I did, if you have it on your show, because I know your researchers are very good. Russert: Well, Miles Benson is a very good reporter for the Newhouse News. Dean: Yes, he is. No, no, no. I’m sure I did. I’m not denying I said that. I have… Russert: But you would no longer cut Social Security? Dean: But you don’t—no. I’m not ever going to cut Social Security benefits. Russert: Would you raise retirement age to 70? Dean: No. No. So Howard Dean, darling of the left and the frontrunner for the Democrat nomination, has now been caught lying TWICE about the same issue. He didn’t mis-speak- he simply thought he could get away with it. Talk about a pattern of deception… He never did answer the question either. why did he want to cut social benifits when the deficit was lower, and not now when it’s higher? Posted by: Alien force at August 7, 2003 09:58 PM For the same reasons Al Gore was pro-gun and pro-life as Senator from Tennessee and STOPPED all that nonsense when he got up to the Bigs. Which is why his own state dropped him like a hot rock in the national election. We could bury Dean now, but he seems to be making pretty good time using his own shovel. Posted by: torpedo_eight at August 7, 2003 10:35 PM How come I don’t see all of the Democrats screaming to get Howard Dean out of office? After all he did ‘LIE’ didn’t he?
