Workers Tell Lieberman Their Greatest Worries

Another local press account of how a candidate - here Lieberman - is rubbing elbows with the common man, this time from the Nashua Telegraph (NH). Among other items, Lieberman talks of plans to help US firms compete agains foreign competition, and to increase government purchasing of US products. A taste:

Lieberman said in two weeks, he will detail plans to help manufacturers compete with foreign competition. Specifically, he mentioned China, which makes up more than 20 percent of the U.S. trade deficit.

“There certainly is a strong feeling among a lot of American manufacturers that the Chinese and others around the world are breaking international trade terms and dumping products here at prices below what manufacturers can produce here,” he said.

Lieberman is also exploring incentives for the federal government to “buy American” with its $2.3 trillion in annual spending.

“We ought to offer a premium for buying American products with that money,” he said. “I’ll be back with details.”

So Lieberman is suggesting that the federal government should spend more to get the same stuff they are already buying. This is to help manufacturers who are getting killed in the world market because their union labor is too expensive.

This election is going to be hilarious. Man, I hope Lieberman gets the ticket.

It is hard to compete when the average worker in China makes $.50 per hour, Mexico (awg 3.50/hr) has lost 2 million jobs to China, in the last three years. I don’t know the answer to this but getting rid of NAFTA isn’t it. We should look out for our neighbors.
I am torn on the nat health plan, first we have to get prescription drug cost & lawsuit settlements under control, then maybe we can look at a nat health plan.
Bush pushed the tax cut thru, (I don’t believe it will help the economy), but believe we should give it a chance. Even if it is so we can look back & use it as a example to never do it again.

Sophia,
No country in the history of the planet has ever taxed itself into prosperity. If it helps to visualize this, imagine that the economy and the government are 2 very different entities. The economy makes things and adds value to them, the government takes income from workers and does stuff with it.

The government doesn’t make anything, including jobs. They create an environment that determines whether jobs can be made or not, but government is only force, not wealth. The government can broke tomorrow (as it often has) and the economy will be fine.

If you don’t think letting people keep their own money will improve the economy, then I’m watering a dead plant. However, if you’re willing to suspend the communist manifesto for a moment, this will all make sense.
